I got a last.fm account so that I could add some music to my facebook page. Better than the other music widget (iLike) that they push (only because the iLike widget only lists 5 songs and generally all you get is a 30 second sampler).
I am really disappointed in the software (edit the playlist off of last.fm page).
Here's my complaints:
- There is no sort items in the playlist button. If you want to sort--you do it manually.
- The edit playlist is a very clunky user interface. There has to be a better way to implement it than how they did it.
- When you edit the playlist manually, I found that some entries magically disappeared. I believe it isn't handling the reordering right and drops some entries. Bad user experience.
- If you navigate out of the edit playlist page, perhaps by clicking on a musical group name, there is no warning that any updates to your playlist will be lost. Hey, how about a freaking warning, dudes?
- Improvement: auto-sort option.
- Improvement: auto-delete duplicate entries.
- Improvement: they seem to have a lot of duplicates in their database (clean that up).
I do software for a living. I also do a lot of testing. I'd kick the software back to the developers and tell them to do a better job.
BTW, my last.fm account is trampolinefspac.

I've noticed that when I play live tracks, last.fm takes the name of the song and associates it with the studio version, even though the album name in the ID3 tag says that it is from a live concert.
I've been thinking about adding (live) to the titles of the song tracks so that it credits the songs correctly and was wondering if anyone else noticed this and what their solution to it.
Do you think that when I play a live version of Mesmerizing, it should bump up the play count of Mesmerizing from Exile or not? I'm thinking that it should not.

^yes, tramp, i've noticed this too. it's rather annoying seeing as how many of the songs i own are live tracks .....
and if it's a live track that doesn't have a studio version associated with it, last fm just puts it as "album unknown" or something like that.

^^ What do you think of the idea of adding (live) to the track title?
cherry_queen
Dec 27 2007, 07:18 PM
i don't really think it's necessary, unless you want everyone who looks at your recently listened tracks to know that it's a live version of the song.

last.fm keeps play counts of each song. The issue is whether different versions of the same song should all count towards the same total play count.
This is splitting hairs. Pretty much like arguing over how many angels can dance over the tip of a needle (popular pasttime during the middle ages).

If you wish to be amused by how picky some people are about play counts on last.fm, check out the group "I Don't Cheat".
It is a group of people that have vowed to not "bump up" play counts by queueing up songs on their computer and not listening to them while they play. This would be known as cheating.

Let's see.
Someone from the Netherlands noticed that I was the top listener of Videophonic and tried to get me to send them the music files. Here was the explanation:
You can't buy the CDs over in The Netherlands (you can't actually buy a CD anywhere except online).
Plus, this dude couldn't manage to get a credit card.
I replied that I had been in contact with Amanda (aka Videophonic). The music can ONLY be purchased online. I also said that you could arrange to get prepaid credit cards. I know that they sell them at Wal-Mart and a bunch of other places.
The reply that I got back was that you couldn't get prepaid credit cards in The Netherlands (which I checked online and it ISN'T TRUE).
This guy just wanted FREE MUSIC and I had NO IDEA who he was.

One of my other musical artists noticed a remark that I had posted on last.fm and sent me a really nice note on myspace. Cool.
