Full Version: Happy Birthday, Sgt. Pepper

Over the weekend the Sgt. Pepper's album turned 40 years old. This album came out less than two months after Liz was born and had been preceded by Surrealistic Pillow and Pet Sounds. There was a lot of interesting music in 1967.

I was reading a piece today that said that they believed that Sgt. Pepper's set a high mark for the Beatles. They had just grown tired of touring and dealing with screaming girls. They wanted just a studio album. Paul McCartney had come up with the idea of a fake band that was their doppel ganger.

I believe in many ways this was their best album, and it was ground breaking because there were no singles released from it--it was a pure album.

OK, now for the Liz tie in. I'm going to have a poll as to which song off of Sgt. Pepper's that you feel would be the best one for Liz to cover. OK, I'm fucking nuts and this is crazy, but I somehow doubt that we've gotten a poll like this one before.

I'll go ahead and give my answer to this poll. I select Good Morning Good Morning. There's a bit of sing-song in it and it's one of the more obscure cuts off of this album. For some reason, this seemed the best one for Liz, but I could also quite easily see her doing "A Day in the Life".

Anyways, like always, there are no right or wrong answers and the idea is to just have fun.

Too cerebral. Sorry. I'll aim lower next time.

There's a tv program on BBC2 right now about modern artists rerecording this album.

Tori Amos does a great cover of She's Leaving Home and I think it's Aimee Mann who did Lucy (possibly for the I Am Sam soundtrack, where it's made up entirely of covers of Beatles songs and one song Sarah Mclachlan massacres).

Although I don't know that many Beatles songs (even though I own one of the sheet music books.. go figure), I don't see any of their work suiting Liz stylistically.

I love The Beatles! I voted for Getting Better because it's my favorite on the album and I'd love to hear Liz do it. It's such a positive song.

Actually, the point of this poll was to get people to think outside of the box. Consider questions not answered before.

There are no easy answers.
sir moltenrod
Well, the answers for this poll were pretty easy for me. It's not too much of a stretch.

I'm glad.

SM, here's your challenge: come up with a poll that's not been asked before. Push the envelope.

I have faith in you.
sir moltenrod
I'll work on that and thanks for your faith.
BTW,I didn't mean to sound glib in my response to your poll. I just mean I love that song and can truly hear Liz doing it. That's all I meant by it was easy for me. wink.gif

Actually I thought that you meant it at face value. You're pretty much exactly what you make yourself out to be, as opposed to some around here that hide behind facades.

Here's something for you to think about: we are at our best when we get pushed to just beyond what we think that we can accomplish and we surprise ourselves to find our boundaries pushed out.

Excellent thought. It coincides with another of my favorites:
A mind that has been expanded can never return to it's original narrow dimension.
