^I think a lot of Phair's acoustic material does show her limits as a vocalist. I didn't care for her itunes acoustic performances of many of her classics (though I adore the original versions). I personally like Phair's "little girl" style of voice-I find it very warm & appealing on her rockier, alternative material-but I don't think it translates well to other genres.
I love her little girl voice too, but back when it was so fucking weird. The real low voice was really nice too on Exile, but she never sounded quite like that on any other recordings. Her voice sounded great on WCSE, I mean it was quite polished but verrry laid-back and still low. On whip-smart and GS more range was shown. I dunno, when she sings live songs now, her voice can still sound good, it just has this consistently cheery vibe to it. I think that might be a big problem I've had with the new stuff, the way she sings so cheerily. Very true kf4, how her voice doesnt translate to other genres.
I still think she's utterly capable of creating many more amazing albums... the unreleased songs from the self-titled were simply amazing. Shallow Opportunities was a fantastic revival of the unique style found on SHANE and NASHVILLE (only found on those 3 songs really) and really was her darkest song in a long time. Bouncer's Conversation was just such a pop gem, the way it sounded so easy for her to say those really brash lyrics, as opposed to the awkward HWC. Jeremy Engle, as everyone knows, is a real treasure, and Fine Again doesn't have the most complex lyrics, but it's still a pretty good song, not trying to be more complex than it is (as, say, Little Digger). While some may despise the 2003 version of Hurricane Cindy, I actually quite like the glossy yet production (dont worry, I still prefer the 98 version). With Somebody's Miracle, we didn't get to hear any of the unreleased songs, but who knows, maybe they were great! And I did enjoy some tracks from the last albums, though no track was perfect. Bionic Eyes was just great, the "baddest dude" line and the too frequently repeated chorus prevents it from perfection. It's Sweet was soo pop yet really had personality. Friend of Mine was nice, yet the production was a bit much. Firewalker was good, but lacked a certain edge found on the live version. Wind and the Mountain was good, especially the strange high vocal in the chorus, but it's a bit too long and the production isn't the greatest. Lazy Dreamer was quite nice, but once again, the production just didn't fit, and her vocal performance wasn't my favorite. Why I Lie and Got My Own Thing are good, but just missing something (production once again as well). The only song that benefitted from the production I'd say was Giving it all To You, one of the few moments where her mainstream pop aspirations succeeded.
