lisa germano - slide

I was listening to this album in the morning when I just wake up in the guesthouse, it sounds amazingly comfortable and relax, feels like in the lost jungle or mountain, lots of flowers and lots of love, like gorgeous adventure or like a roleplay game, visualization impact, I love every inch of this album, sounds fucking great!
If you saw me
Like i see you
Should I tell you?
What if I do?
I know it lives and does
'Cause I felt so yesterday
But as I live and breathe
It always
Goes away
If I saw you
Like I see me
Have to warn you
Silently
I know it lives
It does 'cause I felt so good today
And always like again
I know it's gonna go away
If I saw me
like I see you
I would love me
What if I do?

juliana hatfield - made in china
the first couple of times i listened to this, i was really disappointed. but i have to say it's actually good. i still prefer the pristine singer songwriter pop of beautiful creature but the spiky textures of made in china is equally accomplished. it's just a grower kind of album. songs like "going blonde" and "on video" are so finely calibrated to suggest juliana as one tough chick. dirty rock but fantastic in its own way.
favorite tracks:
going blonde
on video
stay awake
rats in the attic
hole in the sky

yeah, i think so too. it's also the lone ballad, i think. but in the rock side, i think on video is the catchiest. the opening verse gets stuck in my head.

send money kind of sucks. it's so dirgey but not in a melancholic way. and the lyrics are kind of silly, even for juliana. i don't know how anyone can prefer it over stay awake or on video or hole in the sky.

there's an interview she did shortly after the cd came out and they discussed send money. i've always liked it, but liked it even more after reading her reasoning behind it. here's the article : www.magnetmagazine.com/interviews/hatfield.html
the song is so catchy and has the best melody/vocal delivery on the album. really, read the article. it's a great one.

Metric - Grow up and Blow Away
this is unofficially metric's first album but it was eventually scrapped for the more interesting disco punk of old world underground, where are you now? nevertheless, grow up and blow away is one accomplished dance rock album. you can tell that the band was more interested in hip hop when doing the album. emily haines and her sexy voice is the core of this hot listen, whether she's relating a night's adventure in "rock me now" or wafting dreamily in "soft rock star". there's even a hint of things to come (in her knives don't have your back album) with "white gold", a sad torchy piano number. she makes it all work, although it's all pretty good even without her.

King Crimson - The Court of the Crimson King
I had the vinyl version of this LP when I was growing up. I think that I picked it up only after I got into Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The Court of the Crimson King was the only one with Greg Lake before he left King Crimson and formed ELP. My older brothers had the album Tarkus by ELP and that's how I got into ELP. I remember dubbing that one on casette so that we could take it on a debate tournament. My how recording technology has changed in the years.
The Court of the Crimson King features some instruments that seem to meander at times. Only 5 cuts on the album and these are long songs. There are flutes, which are also featured prominently with Jethro Tull.
Robert Fripp recently gained control of this album and rereleased it. I believe that it's been cleaned up a bit in the rerelease on CD.
Here's the front cover from wikipedia:

I seem to remember some mention about Robert Fripp being involved in something here recently.

pj harvey - 4 track demos
if rid of me sounds like a girl throwing a hellstorm of a tantrum, then 4 track demos is the same girl cutting herself in a bathroom. she's one fucked up bitch, that polly jean. for a 4 track demo collection, this sounds so accomplished. raw, shredded guitar riffs and layers of tortured vocals, with pj sporadically sounding as if she's on the verge of ripping flesh or blood stained sheets or mangled male hearts, even probably her own. it's almost like performance art in its very visceral power. you can easily imagine pj in her nightgown, in her bedroom, pictures of ex lovers plastered all over the walls and dedicating each song to each one. unassisted by the wall of black noise of steve albini, her pain is unblocked by overpowering treble and bass. she's one scary girl. love her.
little note: proving that liz and pj work in similar but separate realms, there's an opera sample included in one of the tracks. liz likes the old blues (ruby red lips), pj prefers the tragic operas.
best tracks:
reeling
hardly wait
driving
m-bike

throwing muses-hunkpapa
does not deserve near the criticism that it got and still does today receive. the production is a bit on the iffy side but the songs make up for it and more. "dizzy" is the muses' pop song and kristin's vocals sound great.
"fall down", "dragonhead" and "mania" are some of the other highlights.
redlight
Dec 29 2006, 06:09 PM
I think Hunkpapa is far too erratic to be worthy of being played over and over again. They made far better albums before and after its release. I do love a handful of tracks on there though (especially Bea).

of course they made better albums before and after but Im saying that the album has enough there to not be thrown to the side as TM's "worst album". i love it's midwestern feel.
and of course house tornado > hunkpapa.

Dec 30 2006, 01:23 AM
i think hunkpapa is more straightforward and poppy than house tornado. wait.. i'm not sure. like i said, i can't distinguish between the two.

all i know is house tornado has colder and hunkpapa has dizzy. and house tornado has an almost country-ish feel and a lot of twist and turns with the tempo and the girls really put the whole call and response guitar thing into the extreme. and hunkpapa is.. mm, might need to listen to it again.
if hunkpapa isn't the worst, what is? the last self titled one is a bit hard to get into.
redlight
Dec 30 2006, 04:35 PM
hunkpapa is just a really frustrating album. I liked their last self-titled although it's annoying how much the music drowns out the vocals (especially tanya's). There's the fantastic Half Blast though which makes everything worthy of forgiveness.
