That’s a good point. As Courtney Love once said “Liz, call me when you have just one bad day.”
Looks like this board is going bye bye, huh? Or am I the only one who can no longer see the other topics?
i think it all boils down to this: Hits.
She never TRIED to make a hit album w/ Guyville. So it was honest.
it was fluke that it sold. it went viral. we love it. but it was fluke. everything about it was fluke. the masses won't love it. since day one - back when i was in high school - my friends said: "She can't sing."
we know different...but...that's the thing. It's a small group who like liz. she's not a unit mover or a cash cow.
she has a devoted group of fans - who, despite the bitching and complaining - are exactly that: Devoted.
this sucks because i think liz - toa point - IS in it for the money. to a point. oh she's an artist and a writer and a great guitar player and a perfectly fine singer...if not a genius song-writer...but - that's the thing. business-minded folks try to take the "genius" and sell it - make money - buy pimping it to the masses.
the trick isn't MAKING 1 million dollars. it's getting 1 million people to EACH give you just ONE dollar.
take the little thing and make it huge.
except...there aren't a million people willing to give her one dollar.
(insert avril lavigne gloves and the matrix here)
i'm no longer bitter or angry. i was. how i see it - liz put out enough great songs, that still make the rounds on my mp3 player today. i can ignore the shit. why fight about it?
be nice to see a new album. but if she's not into it, the label's not into it - or politics have tied too much red tape around it - fuck it! why bother.
let's put this into persective here.
It's not Paul Rogers and Queen - putting out a new album.
IT's not the archived and unreleased recordings of Michael Jackson.
It's Liz Phair.
a singer song writer.
Does she have material for an album - or not?
Does the record company trust her or back her creatively - or do they wanna fuck with it and ruin it to make a bigger buck?
and the real question:
Does she have any more decent songs in her?
If not - no biggie.
If yes - put the fuckin' album out.
1 chick. 1 guitar. what's the problem?
but...screw it.
not to get all nostalgic - but - i gotta say one thing right here right now:
THe fans kept me going all these years. really.
i've been on a liz phair list since...1996? 1997? Jase Long's list. Support System. Then the 6'1" Digest. i forget which came first.
i was on newsgroups...message boards...tape trees...
had some serious arguments (usually due to me being a big yapper) - but made some friends too.
the conversations are always bang on. they're great. seeing eye to eye. seeing a wee bit of yourself in someone else's love for liz.
discovering new music through like-minded fans.
it's pretty cool.
i was a teenager when i started out on this list. 18 years old, i think. a kid.
32 years old now. that's a long frickin' time.
Jase - it was great seeing you at that Breeders show the other night. i do believe - the very FIRST TIME i ever sat down on this "new thing" called "the internet" and typed in the name "Liz Phair" in "INFOSEEK" - (there was no such thing as googling something) - his name came up.
Ken Lee, Jeremy Engle..if you are who i think you are...hahaha..from the old school list days...it's cool seeing the same people around for so long.
that's something that NO record company can predict or create. it's a buzz that is far deeper than commercialism.
its TRUE dedication.
Liz has that. Or maybe...WE - her fans - have that.
(you can all puke now!)
dan.
