Random question, but I was wondering if anyone could share what they think the meaning is behind this line from Explain It to Me.
I know her style with writing this song was seemingly just stringing random words and phrases together, building up to the chorus. But surely there has to be some meaning behind it.
Thoughts?
wooden and alone
i always thought the song is about a male rockstar's meteoric rise. maybe it means watch him rise and watch him fall or summin like that. lol

Okay, ilovelunch, you're a fail.

yeah same deal...
i think it's about building someone up - huge - beyond big...larger than life.
So gigantic and beyond the actual flawed, human being they REALLY are...that failure is sure.

of course...i think it can be brought down to any level. rock star analogy...but really - anyone who has ever felt pressure to be something they are not.
you're put on a high pedestal...and maybe you don't feel like you belong.
when you're left to balance on your own - after "they" let go...you go tumbling, tumbling down...down...down...

down ...down ...down.

*splat*

*giggle*

picture the scene in Pink Floyd - the Wall. Comfortably Numb. The rock star cannot go on...he's human...he's worked to death...he's depressed...but the promoters want him to live up to the image they've marketed him out to be...so they give him a shot...some medicine ...a little something to "keep ya goin' for the show.."
"give 'em the medicine/fame injection..."
When they fall - they face all the music alone.

But don't we just love watching? Wouldn't we love to go down in big, dramatic rock-n-roll flames, like that?

Probably not. Of course - you're lucky if you go down. If not - you go to rehab and become lame.

Or you turn Christian.

Or you end up playing a Casino. That's a fate worse than death, no?

Poor rock stars. Sad, sad rock stars.

I think it's a teenager's perspective on inconsistent parenting. One kid gets the shit kicked out of him by dad (figuratively speaking), while the sibling watches from afar. It hurts both of them. The one being pushed too hard feels bad for obvious reasons. They're a fuckup and a failure. And the one who doesn't fail feels guilty for being the better. To me, the lyrics are memories from different stages of childhood.

Familiar with the idiom: "Kiss the ground s/he walks on." ?

And to turn it around "Watch him travel" - leave and "kiss the gravel" - happy to see him leave.
