It was supposed to have come out in the fall, but didn't, and then after she had stated that it was almost done, two big shot producers were brought in? Could yet another one of Liz's albums have been rejected by her label? Wasn't she self-producing it? And John Alagia??? His production was so lame. She's even spoken poorly of Somebody's Miracle, so why would she bring him on board again? Did Dave Matthews make her? Will this next record be another "fucking compromise disaster?"
Discuss.

maybe what's delaying it is her unwillingness to compromise this time around. maybe. just maybe.
shatter.. amen
it might be shadoobie though.

I'm thinking the album is done and in the can. Liz missed the original deadline, so the label probably is waiting on releasing it sometime early next year. As for Alagia and
Trott, I'm hoping that they were brought in to put some finishing touches on the album and not fuck to much with Liz's original intention of keeping the sound more raw and
"sloppy". I had reservations about them coming on at first but remain very hopeful.

i remain hopeful as well...that being said - if this is a compromise record - i'm done.
no i'm not.
yes i am.
no i'm not.
yes i am.
I'm 31 now. I'll be 32 in May. The old ticker is getting on in years.
One more shite album from Liz...well...that could just be the end of me.
there is a lot though, on this album - mainly with all she's said. "Creative for the first time in years..."
"raw sounding...i'm not letting producers fuck with it..."
"they are giving me creative control..."
if it is a piece of bland, non-challenging, unintelligent mush about a skanky pair of underpants and being the oddball in highschool (even though she's in her forties) - then ...well... i think it's pretty self-explanitory what's REALLY going on here...

Seriously. Is this twat a robot or a pretentious English major???? Because I was a pretentious english major once too - and while I'll fully own up to and admit to writing some pretty idiotic things on this list and many others in my day - I don't think I've ever heard the barrel of stupidity being scraped QUITE as hard as when Lucky posts.
that could be an Of Montreal song: "Lucky Posts to the Liz Phair List".

i have a sneaking suspicion that no matter how "Decent" or "pleasant" or however much of a "Return to form" this new album will shape up to be, we are all still going to find something to complain about. it's just the way it is. it's the price she has to pay for releasing such a perfect, brilliant first album.

Indeed, in a way her first album will always haunt her. It's so unfortunate. But if she hasn't taken a step far enough from mainSTREAM then we're in for a rocky time ahead I fear.

the thing is the only acceptable thing for a lot of fans will be something drastic, something totally lo-fi. which i don't think liz is interested in anymore. even if she comes up with something accessible but of quality, people will decry the usual stuff. i mean, it's not this way for some artists. even juliana's how to walk away, as good as an it is, is her most mainstream album yet. but people didn't mind. while liz's table for one, which is a fucking brilliant song and lazy dreamer, why i lie, everything (between us) and those really good songs in her self titled are never thought of as anything more than decent. if shining on came from liz, people would rip on it seriously. only juliana fans would know what the fuck i'm talking about. lol
maybe it's more about the way liz makes her music. people prefer her alone. which explains the alarm about her working with that alagia person.

No, you're right. I do understand, there's this incredible double standard being placed on Liz by her most devoted fans - myself included - that is something that Juliana doesn't have to deal with, but there are so many parallels it doesn't seem comprehensible. Reading Juliana's memoir, I can only but imagine what's going on with Liz.
How I wish she was still into lo-fi, I can't help but think of Kim Deal saying that she refuses to work with Pro Tools in the studio because it is so measured and doesn't generally allow for sloppiness, at least not in a truly authentic way. I think that's what Kim objected to. I can't help but wish Liz would do the same.

That second album wasn't too shabby, either.
As for the lo-fi/Kim Deal thing, I think Liz just wants to work with whatever's easiest, that's the impression I get. For her at this point, I'm sure she totally digs any digital thing that makes her job easier. The 4-track technology was what was available to her in 1991, and it was just something she did for fun, to amuse herself and her friends. Her job is way different now. I don't doubt that she genuinely likes moments of sloppiness, but I don't see her recording with tape--which, by the way, is what lo-fi is all about: tape hiss, imperfect levels, not quite balanced mixes. (I've seen the word 'lo-fi' used to describe concerts, movies, and god knows what else--it's bizarre.)
As for Kim Deal, she is someone who is totally consumed by music, and probably spends the vast majority of every day thinking about it, listening to it, playing it, etc. She's an analog enthusiast and obsessive about the work she does in the recording studio. She's a completely different creature from Liz. I'd say Liz isn't even half as interested in music as Kim Deal is. Which is fine, whatever.

Hey - good point about Juliana and Shining On...and if that song came from Liz. You're right, we'd rip it! Oddly, it's my fave on the new Juliana album..in fact the new Juliana album is one of my faves of the year!
and...while i agree - exile in guyville does haunt liz as the untouchable height she will never again attain - i don't think i am so deluded that i would HAVE to find something to complain about...
Exile is great... Whip-Smart - i honestly hold it on par!! It's a brilliantly bizarre album!
Whitechocolatespaceegg...that thing didn't leave my CD player for a year! Sure - a BIT more polished...but complaints? I don't have any at all! I think it's brilliant.
even the self-titled...
had they swapped the shittier songs (Underwear, Extraordinary, Why Can't I)
with the EP songs from comeandget it -
and kept stuff like Firewalkwer, HWV, Love/Hate, Friend of Mine -
brilliant! Even Take a Look...poppier...but i didn't mind it at all. it was the "new liz" that i could handle. watered-down a bit...sure...but still liz.
Somebody's Miracle, even better...take out 3 or 4 tracks and it would have been on par with WCSE.
WHy I Lie, Wind in the Mountain, Leap of Innocence...i really dug those!
i have no problem with a polished sound...i think bottom line: It just has to be good.
Not repetative and cookie-cutter. not bland.
i never disagreed more than when Courtney Love called liz phair "bland like a potato."
But - i never AGREED MORE after hearing the self-titled record.
I do think the producer is important, but evenmore so - i think SOLE song-writing should be given to Liz.
the shittiest songs on her last two albums were the ones with nine frickin' people to the song-writing credits!
with nine people writing a song - i'd expect bohemian rhapsody!!!
not "Why Can't I".
i think Liz should have moved in the direction of Leslie Feist. Fun, poppy, catchy - but still cool.
very radio-friendly...but still smart.
juliana too...she's consistent. while this is her most mainstream album, it's still Juliana. same kind of melodies, same lyrics...same feeling of..."Juliana loneliness"... and yeah - that memoir. damn. beautifully written.
i've always held a shit load of respect for Juliana as a songwriter...she's never let me down yet.

Hey you know what? My bad. I agree with you. It wouldn't be on par. I just think...it would have been "decent", you know? like...take out the squirmingly awful songs like "lost tonight", Everything to me, and somebody's miracle... and i think it would have been okay...still a slip down...but not horrific. it would have passed...i would have liked it more...
but yeah - i agree. WCSE was something super special...i agree. something about her first trio of albums...untouchable.

lol i do agree. wcse and exile and ws are really literate, smart, memorable albums. but lp and sm works quite well in their own special ways. what ruins sm sometimes is that how bipolar the sentiments are, or the mindframe. it feels like it's coming from an adult then count on my love comes zooming in the stage and ruins the middle aged vibe. lp is unadulterated teenage candygloss.

Ugh, no mention on the Pitchfork Spring 2009 release list (runs April-August), but then again, they don't even have The God Help the Girl soundtrack listed (Belle and Sebastian side project, Matador release) which has a June release date, so who knows.
I think there's supposed to be a Banana Republic song next month, maybe then we will know more.
