Just found this webcast of the entire 'Guyville' concert at the Troubadour, 10/5/08. Nice sound quality. Enjoy! http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryid=95434040
P.S. There are also two interviews with Liz, one around 8 minutes long and a much longer 36 minute extended interview. The second longer one is a good interview. Never knew Liz was such a big PJ Harvey fan.

Click on "Hear The Concert" for the show, click on "Hear Now" for the short interview and "Listen To The Extended Interview with Liz Phair and NPR's Alex Cohen" for the 36 minute interview. Also if you click on photos of the show, there are some nice shots of Liz and the band. The show and interviews are also posted over on Liz's MySpace and Facebook pages.

okay, I'm on it, but WLY can't download it. That's my one stipulation smile.gif

He won't want it anyway, there's gaps all over the place. (Not really but I doubt he can read things in brackets.)

According to Ken's website, Mesmerizing, the podcast will be available for free download on iTunes beginning Tuesday, 10/7/08. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/updates.html Thanks Ken!

It's only at 128 if anyone wants a higher quality copy let me know. Probably should have bumped it up to 192.

Anyway, hope there's someone out there still to enjoy this! (You don't count Fub). smile.gif Thanks XRay.

can someone post the interview?

I listened to about the first 20 minutes. I thought it was bad comapred to what I heard in Minnepaolis. The Minneapolis sound was muddy where I was, but it rocked. The LA sound is pretty limp in comparison. I wonder how they recorded it. The lower bassy stuff is a bit light here. Or is it just me--comparing to the night before? Does it sound normal here?
baudrillard
I'll post the interview today! Geesh!

And no, I think the recording is very good quality.

i love how she says she loves pj harvey and aimee mann.

but then she had to mention her avril fixation. ugh

thanks baud.

RE: sound quality, this was a soundboard recording, and it sounded like the levels of various lines were adjusted drastically throughout the performance. For a better idea of what the band sounded like, I recommend the audience recording of the first New York show (never did get the bootleg of the 2nd show, which I attended). Although nothing compares to actually having been there. Jeez, did they rock hard at the Hiro Ballroom in June. I'm still amazed.

Perhaps more jarring to me was the quality of Liz's vocal performance at the Troubadour. Someone on another forum commented that not only was the playing faithful to the album, but Liz was singing like she used to back in the day. I don't think that was intentional, however -- she sounds positively terrified. I kind of like that, of course. Both her singing and her banter sounded much closer to the tomboyish 20something of her earliest interviews and vocal performances. And by that I mean there was no overly-girlish, sibilant affectation (at least I think it's an affectation) like you can hear in the NPR interview (which was decent, but not quite on par with the more interesting radio interviews she gave over the summer).

I don't mean to get too nerdy about the details, but surely anyone who listens to the NPR concert can hear the severe tremor in her voice. I don't mean that as a criticism, either. At any rate, I still love Liz Phair.

Baud, I don't mean your recording--the performance. The recording itself sounds good, so good that I wondering if they did it through the sound board or what. They really rocked the night before; much tighter as a band. But I did only hear about 20 minutes if this performnce. I hope someone got the Minneapolis show b/c I swear it was one of the best I've heard performance-wise from Liz.

Yeah it's a soundboard alright, and I had to fix it because near the end of 6'1" they fucking turned the master volume down drastically and then turned it back up a few chords into the next track. Hopefully you won't notice because I was pretty adept at fixing it (hopefully), but if you listen to the stream, eeew.

I don't see how they're going to fix that for the "podcast" unless it's not on the master, but it sure sounds like it is on their master to me.

Posted my message before reading Jeremy's. No, I didn't even notice a diff. on 6'1" so you did agreat job. Would never know you had to manipulate it. What equip. do you use?

Yeah, the vocal sounds as you put it--tremolous--on the LA recording. Not the night before, from where I heard things. Maybe she was sick or something. But, where needed, she also didn't have good harmony or 2nd voice co-singing to go along with her. Except for Flower in Minnesota the night before. Ha!

I just used basic music editing software (Adobe Audition) and took it from a couple of different recordings at different volumes. It's the cutting it exactly on the beat that's tricky.

I've used the AA pre-cursor, CoolEdit Pro 2.1a, for my own music and various little things, for about 5 years. I'd heard that AA didn't change much at first from CEP, but that the latest release introduced big changes. I was running WinME, so I couldn't upgrade to AA. I just got a new PC, however, so I'm about to get something better; probably Cubase. Good job with AA. It came out well.

Just got done listening to the show from start to finish on my ipod and thought Liz sounded just fine. Sure she has developed a little bit of a Stevie Nicks warble to her voice over
the past few years but I always loved Stevie's voice and have no problem with the current state of Liz's. I also agree that the mix could have been better, the band and instruments
are not loud enough, but overall I love her performance and thought she started to sound better and better as the show went on. Kudos, Liz!

i love her performance of dance with the seven veils. she's really straining but it comes out tense and beautiful. the song itself is so fucking good. it became my fave in the album recently.

enough of my shatter obsession, here comes dance...

I really, really don't think her shaky voice is intentional or a product of anything but nerves. She sounds scared shitless, but it tends to go away as the concert goes on. I noticed it on both of the bootlegs I've heard from this current tour and noticed it in Philadelphia recently. Sounds just like the boots of her earliest performances from 1993: total terror. Note that on her recent albums, her voice is tremor-free, as it always was in the studio.
