Christmas comes on the same day every year, and yet remains the most surprising of dates. How does that work, I wonder? I think it's got something to do with the nature of expectations. For instance, is it better to invent a new holiday altogether (Chewbannukah, for instance), out of the blue, and REALLY suprise your kids, or rather to seed expectation regarding a looming celebration and watch their anticipation grow? I guess both varieties of surprise have merit, but the latter is much more fun. Here are some examples of the different types of surprises.

"True" surprises:
a ) meteors
b ) spanish inquisitions (nobody expects THOSE)
c ) pregnancy
d ) traffic tickets
e ) cancer

Expected surprises:
a ) birthday presents
b ) festivus miracles
c ) come shots

Now tell me, and tell me truly, which list do YOU prefer?

He hasn't made a decent film since Howard the Duck, and Lea Thompson saved his ass on that one. NOTE: Careful survey of the cited wikipedia article reveals the following, rather shocking quotation:
