Best band name. Ever. And that ain't all. In fact, it's just the start of the fun with Morningwood.
On their winning debut album, these New York smartalecs unveil an instantly addictive sound that's every bit as cheeky as their handle.
Fronted by irrepressible spitfire Chantal Claret and anchored by ex-members of Wallflowers and Spacehog, these retro-rockers come off like a dozen great bands rolled into one. They've got The Donnas' power-chord heft. Blondie's disco smarts. Divinyls' husky sexuality. The Pretenders' wiry confidence. Veruca Salt's punchy pop. Liz Phair's indie-pop songcraft. Garbage's electro-trash. And even a dash of Courtney Love's throat-shredding grit.
More importantly, they mix, match and meld them on a slate of impossibly catchy hits-in-waiting. Nu Rock is a punky fuzzbuster. Jetsetter is an electronica-laced afterburner. Take Off Your Clothes is a cat-in-heat low-rocker. Body is searingly seductive. Easy is the easily the best song Chryssie Hynde never wrote. And the insanely catchy synth-rock single Nth Degree will have you bouncing around the room and singing along with the cheerleader chorus -- "M-O, M-O-R, M-O-R-N-I-N-G, W-O-O-D!" -- like some sort of cross between Beavis, Butthead and Toni Basil.
Resistance is futile -- and since you can't beat Morningwood, you might as well just lie back and enjoy it.

I love Morningwood and when I found out they were listed under Capitol, I freaked. Morningwood, just like the album Liz Phair, has severely been altered by Capitol, and that really pisses me off. They bleeped "fuck" in Jetsetter. Why? What the fuck?! However, this album does remind me of how I felt when I first listened to Liz Phair.
