OK, I guess I'll start the discussion. Girls,Girls,Girls is unbelievable! IMHO, far superior to the shortened Exile version. Good Stuff!!

THANK YOU!!!!

It took me a long time to get into the "Exile" version of Girls Girls Girls. I love the Girlysounds version even more!!!
Erebus
Thank you for these, for the new link, and for the work involved. They do sound so sweet.
totallytiffany
Why thank you! I think it's pretty insteresting the actual words "Girly Sound". If I were to record a bunch of songs I wrote onto a collection of tapes...I would most likely name them something stupid like "Home Tapes."
johnandcate
I wounder if polyester bride is going to surface soon??!!
shmoopy
Thank you Ken & Gevaudan for sharing these songs with us.
The sound is amazing.
I'm excited to hear some old favorites like "One Less Thing" and "Money" with this improved sound quality, not to mention those unheard tracks.
Girly Sound really is Liz at her best. I love it.

Don't try right-clicking. I tried this and got the same message. Instead just click on the link and a box will pop up asking you if you want to save the file.

kudos to Ken and Gev.

this is fucking amazing. thanks a hell of a lot. and "girls! girls! girls!" has almost instantly become one of my favorite girlysound songs. jesus christ. its epic!
Freakofnature
Girls! Girls! Girls! and Love Song are immaculate.

I miss this Liz. a lot.

So how does one go from writing "You've been around enough to be smart enough to stay the fuck away from me" to "Are you ever gonna be that real to me? Everything to me?" I mean, for crying out loud. How does a person go from being so insightful, original, and just plain funny, to being so boringly bland?

I move that we start a fund to buy Liz a cabin in the woods, an old 4 track, and a shitload of pot.

(To all of you who are going to say "But Liz has chaaaaaaaaaaaaanged! She has the right to be boring!" Note that I'm being sarcastic)

thanks, ken lee and LPX's gev. she really does borrow a lot from some songs, i notice very familiar melodies in girls girls girls, at least two which i cannot seem to place, like the one with the ups line. i've heard that one before (in a that dog. song) but i'm sure it's from somewhere older. she's so odd in a good way.

That's not clear at this point. A possible radio "personality" (which there doesn't seem to be much of, actually)? In my opinion it's some sort of high school/college radio guy, maybe.

This is a pinned thread now? Cool.

Yes Liz has changed, but hearing the new old stuff makes me think that Brad Wood is actually the one who fucked it up for Liz. Rob Henderson was right when he fought for a more Girly Sound aesthetic for Guyville. By changing that signature sound of hers into a more classic rock/ indie type thing, she lost sight of what she had been doing and she's never come close to recapturing that. Maybe a few wcse songs; especially the demos for that album.

I don't think Brad Wood is to blame for any shift in Liz's direction. I think once Liz realized she could take what had been a hobby and actually make money doing it her vision changed.

cf: you said in our first chat that you consciously made it a "rock" album.
liz: the whole battle between me and john really was that he wanted a far more sparse and vulernable sound. he envisioned my songs recorded at their barest essential and always liked it when my voice was sort of fluttery. he would deny this -- I know he would -- but would have to concede that to an extent I really wanted to have more of my energy and aggressiveness, and I love rock... I mean christ, I was going to AC/DC concerts, I was really into that stuff, so as much as that isn't a part of my songwriting style, it's definitely a part of the music that I like. so I just wanted something that kicked some ass, and what nicely happened is, it still has a lot of girly sound elements in it considering what I thought I was actually making. which is wonderful and i can credit brad with reigning me enough to make sure that happened. but we were pretty clear-headed about what we were trying to do.

from here

But when Henderson and Phair tried to re-create that feel in the studio with Wood, they floundered. Henderson and Phair soon began quarreling about what direction to take: He wanted a stripped-down but precise sound, possibly with outside musicians; she wanted to rock, on her own idiosyncratic terms. "We both wanted something for me," Phair says. "He was projecting onto me what he wanted my music to come out like, which was wrong. So I blew him off." Henderson was the first member of the music community to find out how tough and stubborn Phair could be. He became so disgusted by what he saw as the musical compromises she was making that he stopped showing up at the studio; Phair moved out of his apartment and began working with Wood exclusively on the music that would become Exile in Guyville. "I'm reminded of the famous Greil Marcus quote about Rod Stewart, something about how he wanted to be a rock star and all that entailed-sitting by the pool, having sex with groupies and snorting coke-and if he had to write great songs to do it, he was perfectly willing to write them," Henderson says.

"I think she betrayed her talent in much the same way." Henderson nonetheless tipped off Wood that Matador was interested in Phair's music based on the Girly Sound tapes. "The relationship between Liz and me had become so strained that I realized it wouldn't last long enough for the album to be any good," Henderson says. "So I figured why not let somebody else do it." Wood called Matador copresident Gerard Cosloy the next day. But the split was less than amicable: Henderson hasn't had any artists record at Idful since, even though he has made a number of albums in Chicago.

Despite his significant early role in its creation, Henderson didn't receive any credit on Guyville but says the album isn't anything he'd want his name on anyway. "I have very little ill will toward Liz," he says, "unless you consider aesthetics."

from here

Remember, it was Liz who wanted to use Exile On Mainstreet as a template. From what Liz has said, it was Brad who always tried to make sure the songs retained the feel of Girly Sound.

i wanted to say on the whole brad wood debate that he helped make liz phair who she is. i haven't heard these new girly sound songs, but i have heard a lot of the others and found that she cribbed way too much. what brad did with exile was to give liz her own identity, her own voice, and her own sound. on exile you have an woman who's self assured and has found her own voice whereas on girly sound you have a woman who felt it ok to steal other people's lines to try and make her own. for example the line "i walk the line so i can keep a close watch on this twat of mine" is not hers. the only part of that line that is original is twat. the rest is from johnny cash. don't get me wrong, i really enjoy girly sound, but i enjoy it for what it is. a glimpse into early liz finding her way through music. very amaturish, but still very good at the same time. by no means is this her masterpiece. still girly sound showed us what talenet liz was capable of , as well as what a unique woman she would become once she found her voice. also a big thanks for these new rare liz phair songs. definitely gonig to give these a spin.

Liz didn't "steal other people's lines". There was no theft involved, and she certainly wasn't building on someone else's material with any malicious intent. In that aspect, Girly Sound isn't any different than the label-released LPs. Yes, even Somebody's Miracle has the same elements.

If Girly Sound isn't her "masterpiece", what is? Liz Phair?

I've been listening to the four newly released GS songs for a while now. I love them. That's the very short version of my opinion. They are the best thing I've heard since whipsmart. Those who worked to make them available have done much to further the LP legacy. If she hasn't done so already, Liz should thank those responsible for pursuing, preserving, and presenting this great work of hers. It is truly remarkable stuff.

Girls! Girls! Girls! --- Here you have LP at her schizoid finest. She's lethal and uncaring. But how can a smart girl be otherwise? Boys want to fuck her, she knows, and they'll say or do anything to make it happen. They're all liars. For boys, sex is the goal, and everything is a means to achieve that end. She'll play the game. She'll take FULL advantage, as a matter of fact. So watch out, boys. Leave her alone, and know that even if you manage to get some, she'll fuck you worse in the end. Boys should know to expect this. Right?

EIG is just as sinister in this regard. Liz is the smart, hot, scary girl on whom boys project their worst fears. But this GS version is better. I now think of this song as the monologue in some guy's head, standing across a room, staring at her, contemplating her obviously schizoid stance on romantic love. And here is the key to the whole song, in my opinion--the word LOVE. Imagine a boy trying to use it on her. She'd laugh, knowing full well that love doesn't exist.

Then, to make it even more poignant, she ducks into the girls room (figuratively) and starts tossing the word LOVE around like it means absolutely nothing. Aren't girls just silly? This is the side boys don't get to see. She's not psychotic after all. But there ARE rules about the word love, and she's merely observing them. Too bad all of us can't be girls, right? They don't have to pretend to hate each other, or kill each other, or take prisoners, or whatever. Right.

um, the beginning and ending lines to fuck or die are pretty much stolen from johnny cash's walk the line.

fuck or die:

I keep a close watch on this twat of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
And the condom on your dick's the tie that binds
Because you're mine I walk the line

walk the line:

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

yes liz did add some things to her lines, but they both sound very similar to me. and that's what i was saying. to me, on girly sound, liz doesn't always seem to find her own voice. a lot of her lyrics and meloy are stolen. it's not til exile where she really showcases her own style and voice. with the help of brad wood. i don't think a song like fuck or die could've been done on exile, much less released due to copyright laws. nothing particularly wrong with what liz was doing on girly sound, as i do like it. i think though she doesn't start to come into her own until exile. and also the sound/mixing on girly sound is the worst ever. i realize that this is due in part to me, cause i just have a hard time listening to music with bad sound/mixing jobs. i understand that this was a very amatuer job and was just liz in the basement with her recorder and guitar, but it doesn't bring out her best qualities. but it does an amazing amount of talent this woman has. and does on a lot of these songs from girly sound. i just think there are more moments where her own voice isn't always there. not trying to knock liz in any way. i just perfer the more original side to liz. on her own she's written some amazing songs.

For God's sake, everybody writes songs inspired by a particular event or someone close to them or another singer's way of writing or whatever. Is it really that big a deal? (This is aimed at wly)
redlight
Additionally, the recent Girly Sound songs to be unveiled are rather good (especially Love Song) but nothing beats I Know It's Not Easy thus far.

no, there's nothing wrong with that at all. i completely agree. although what liz did at times wasn't that. she actually lifted people's lyrics and melody. she would change them ever so slightly, but you could still tell what they originally were. the aforementioned fuck or die is an example of that. and goodness knows the cash family has a great claim of plagerism against her if they wanted to file suit. they're not going to obviously, but they still could. there are still amazing songs on girly sound that are all liz and those are her best showcase. can't get out of what i'm into is a great example. as is south dakota.
redlight
But Fuck or Die was never officially released.

Observising songs that were officially released, there isn't any extreme plagarism going on as you say Fuck or Die is guilty of.

Um and? Got My Own Thing has music from another song. Everyone's influenced by something --- it's not like there's a lot left that someone hasn't said in some shape or form. I guess Led Zepplin could press suit for When The Levee Breaks on Jealousy. Ooh! And that was on two different works --- pressed by Matador, Atlantic, and Capitol. Oh god everyone's going to be sued!

Correction: there is a lot of territory left, but the artists will still be influenced by other works.

No. If that were true, the Cash family could probably press suit against everyone who sang the damn song in their fucking car too.

She's lampooning Walk the Line. When I bust out the girlysound disk and play 'Fuck or Die' for people who know and love Johnny Cash, they laugh. That horrible, demented girl (Phair) is ruining his sweet little song about chastity. It's pretty funny. She didn't even go to prison, or take benzedrine by the handful, or fuck 2.6x10^3 groupies. What does she know about being unfaithful anyhow? The lying bitch. She's making shit up again.

Go thumb through a Norton Anthology of Literature, or some other highly annotated collection, and look at all the footnotes / references. 'Cribbing' is not only rampant, but is also 'literarily' requisite for entry. Synthesizing unrelated works increases the value of both. Academics love that shit. You take the context of one work, fuse crap from some other, and end up with more than the sum of the parts. Can it be called plagiarism? Well, maybe, I guess, sort of.. But not really. Plagiarism is more when you borrow artlessly (without irony for instance), when there is no synthesis.

I'm trying to picture Liz at the Grand Ol Opry, cranking out Fuck or Die to a stunned audience. What would happen? What would the average Cuntry music fan do? Here are some choices:

1) laugh
2) lob lawsuits
3) lob tomatoes
4) cut the building power
5) call in an airstrike on their own position
..this list is actually pretty long, but I think you get the idea.
magicatfirstglance
I think "In Love With Yourself" is an amazing song.

i hopefully can find an mp3.. yeah i haven't searched this thread yet tongue.gif

Thanks for the mp3s! Much appreciated. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

"Love Song" is amazing. Had it on repeat. Not sure what its deal is yet but it has a kinda tragic aura to it. Though knowing me it'll be something completely different. laugh.gif

The GGG is fantastic too. I've listened to it more than the Exile version already! cool.gif
