Just found this over at Mesmerizing. Seems that Liz does or at least did have the Girlysounds tapes. Not certain when she sent these tapes ( recently or some time in the past ) to the gentleman Ken refers too but anyway this info is worth reading! Polyester Bride on Girlysounds, BLOWS my mind!!
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2471/random.html Scroll down to the bottom. Thanks Ken!

wow that was really cool.

im not being sarsastic either

Liz hasn't had a copy of the full set practically since she initially distributed them. They've been alternately "in a closet" or "in [her] parents' basement" for years since. The only copies she's had over the years were what she got from fans (the so-called "complete" Girly Sound set that has circulated in poor quality over the years) and the Secretly Timid bootleg (which she has claimed to be quite fond of). The tapes called Yo Yo Buddy Yup Yup Word To Ya Muthuh and Girls Girls Girls are more than likely not in her possession currently (in Manhattan Beach or elsewhere).

Yeah, I actually know that, as well as the circumstances leading up to her receiving that CD-R.

I was saying that she doesn't have her initial dubs -- the full 3-cassette set -- and she hasn't had them for years. She gave copies of the first two cassettes to that guy in 1992 or so. And she certainly isn't the one circulating the mp3s on here.

Oh, and FWIW: it really is Girly Sound. Two words, with a singular Sound.

I'd actually like to know who "ATOM" is. Not that there's anything wrong with posting the songs, but because the quality is lower than I am used to hearing. Not only that, it just means there are other copies of this material, aside from the one copy that we know of, so where have they been hiding and why? I certainly don't think it's Liz posting the mp3 files... One would think she'd have better things to do with her time... or at least I hope she does.

Ok, I stand corrected on Girls Girls Girls being tape two, though I'm not quite sure that's true. The sound quality is worse, and the songs are on an acoustic guitar, which in my opinion means they're probably older. Or the guy who gave them to Ken just played that tape more.
sixdickpimp
Oh, and Jeremey, did hearing Polyester Bride on GS change your perception of that song, or all of wcse for that matter? I think I remember you being one of the people who wrote it off as a wanna be radio hit type thing. I was struck by how similar it was, though slowed down a lot, but have always loved the song.

I promise you that those songs aren't being played on an acoustic guitar. Listen to the final few seconds of "Valentine" -- hear that little bit of feedback? It's a low-volume electric guitar. Her recording technique was different on Tape 2; she grew slightly more sophisticated (using reverb where there had been none on Yo Yo Buddy; multi-layered vocals), and it's definitely electric. Even if it's not immediately clear on some songs ("Hello Sailor" sounds like it could be acoustic, too), it definitely is on others. Not sure what's up with the drop in sound quality, although I did notice more tape hiss on Girls Girls Girls. And anyway, years and years ago, when Girly Sound was reviewed in fanzines, Yo Yo Buddy was referred to as the first tape.

I was wondering the same thing...
Space Pirate
Yes, where can these Polyester Bride and Girls! Girls! Girls! demos be heard?
mintless
With this new information, let's make conections...

The song we've called Do You Love Me is probably Ant In Alaska, and I Know Its Not Easy is probably Easy Target. Any others I'm forgetting...?
ryno
Doesn't "I Know It's Not Easy" have the line "I'm just an ant in Alaska to you." in it?

But I was wondering the same thing: which songs on Yo Yo Buddy and Girls Girls Girls are known to people already but with different names.

I was wondering if "Don't Hold Your Breath" might be "If I Ever Pay You Back"...
sixdickpimp
Jeremy, I am not convinced at all about the Girls Girls Girls songs being electric, though I'll go and listen again with headphones. And I still think it might have been the first tape. Who's to say that Liz didn't give that guy Yo Yo Buddy first, as it was her newest batch of songs. Perhaps he liked what he heard, and she sent him the first tape, second. Though with that weird radio guy on Girls, that would imply that she had released something before? I think the only people who know are Liz, Tae, and Chris Brokaw.
sixdickpimp
One more thing. About Liz not having the original GS dubs, that is not true. Circa Juvenalia, she had ALL of GS transferred to ADAT to preserve them more adequately. That's when she admitted to having around 50something of those songs. So Liz ultimately does possess the best quality source material, even if it's in her parents basement.
Bender
Whose ass does a guy got to kiss to get Girly Sound "Polyester Bride?"

Please.
Thank you.

Heh...

Do you know how many copies are actually floating around Los Angeles?

Here's a fact: Friends who were privy to an initial copy--and thought highly of Liz--distributed second-gen copies to their friends.

In the words of the dark mistress herself, "take a look, take a look."

On a side note...

How many of you would mindlessly scurry off to an abandoned warehouse in search of these "elusive" tapes if the address was posted quite blatantly in a Wikipedia article?

That's what I thought. Now shut the fuck up and go eat spinach, bitches!

Okay. 'Cause you really don't think that's an acoustic guitar on "Ant In Alaska", do you? Never in a hundred million years would I believe that. "Love Song"? And where's the scraping fret noise when she changes chords if the whole tape is acoustic? I don't know -- acoustic guitars just have a certain tonal quality to them. And low-volume, clean electric guitars sound another way.

STFU. I think we're all aware of how the tapes were circulated.
Obviously full copies of these tapes are rare since it's taken 15 years for a full track-list to materialize for the first 2 tapes, with the 3rd tape still unknown to the majority of Liz's fans.
I'm still amazed it took this long for somebody to track down these missing Girly Sound songs.
I really hope Liz realizes how important these songs are and gives them an official release someday.

So... instead of sending a shitload of people to this person's page and possibly finding out through his/her responses where the tracks came from and if there were more... You recorded the tracks, signed up with another username, and posted the files to hold them over everyone's heads, leaving them to believe that you had some sort of secret source? For what... ego?

Thanks for ruining the element of surprise.
All the tracks could have been given out all at once.

I posted them under a different name because I was hoping to glean some more info from that person before I started blabbing about the songs. I wasn't holding anything over anyone's head-from previous discussions on this board it didn't seem like anyone was planning to share the songs with the rest of us anyway. Sorry for ruining whatever was being planned, I was just excited about what I had found and wanted to share it with other people...it has nothing to do with ego. Sorry for making it seem like I had some secret source-again I wanted to speak with the person who created the myspace profile before I sent everyone over there. Unfortunately, I didn't get a response from them...

Well, it's not worth discussing. We'll just end up going back and forth on it and there's no sense in it. You found them, you posted them. Great. Even though it appeared as though you (as ATOM) had a source, it isn't fair to get on to you about it. It isn't your fault that someone is an untrustworthy asshole.

And to who ever created that account... You ought to be smacked. Once for every mp3 file. Some people (myself included) go extremely far out of their way to provide everyone in this little community with what they want when it's possible to do so. And this is how they are repaid, by one moron that just can't sit still and appreciate what other people do.

As far as the Girlysound tapes, what exactly have you guys gone out of your way to provide to everyone so far? the general populace on the board has gotten a picture of a tape and a lyric transcription. They haven't recieved any information from yourself or ken that there is anything in the works to provide the board with these songs. I've fallen back on the fact that Ken has always been a stand-up guy and will put them out for consumption at some point. I'm not saying there aren't any such plans but most of the board feel like they have been left hanging and have had to settle for discussion of the tapes by the "cool kids"worthy of getting a copy. Seems you are mad cause one of the cool kids decided to hang with forum nerds (ie hook them up with a few songs).

Thank you schmoopy/ATOM for providing the songs so the unwashed masses could hear these songs. As ATOM you never said you had a source, folks just made assumptions in the abscence of facts. You got my forum member of the year for posting the julie johnson songs and will probably get the 2006 award for your contributions here. You aren't the one holding the songs over someone's head, somebody needs to look in the mirror. No one would have probably posted those songs to myspace without someone throwing out lyric transciptions and such. Gev obviously couldn't hold back throwing that out, basically outing the fact that some folks had the new girlysound, so i'm not too pissed at the guy who posted the myspace stuff.

I didn't say anything regarding just Girly Sound. I, myself, have done plenty in other aspects. If you don't see or get that, big deal. Don't care what you think, actually. I'm not required to run everything I do and say through you or anyone else.

If you took the picture of the cassette tape seriously, you're a moronic fool.

As far as a plan to provide everyone with the tracks... And this leads me right back to what I just said... I am not required to run everything I do and say through you or anyone else. But, yes, dear Rob, there was a plan. It was a damned good one, too. And yes, the lyrics to Girls! Girls! Girls! were part of that plan. Sometimes things do not work out the way they should. Things happen. Lines get crossed. Time gets consumed. And obviously people get bitter over not being included or trusted. Maybe you should ask yourself why that is.

Tell me, Rob... If someone asked you to keep something quiet until they found out more information on said something... Would you go running your mouth, making copies of this something for people? Or do you think you would be able to keep your excitement over said something quiet until the time was right to reveal it in it's complete form?

You know what, don't answer that at all. In fact, don't waste your precious time because I honestly do not give one shit about what you would do with any information, and don't really care what you think about anything. This entire post has been a waste of my time... I just now realized one very important thing about you. But I'm afraid I have to keep it a secret within the "cool kids" group for now. You understand, I'm sure.

You are obviously half Tidy-Bowl man (being an expert on the flotsam of Los Angeles), half Gary Indiana Jones (something about abandoned warehouses), and you capitalize Friends (like the show). In other words, you know your shit. You're a fortunate soldier. I'm glad to know you're on the right side of this issue. Bottom line--nothing rivals the importance of disseminating these songs. I don't know about Ant in Alaska, but of the new stuff we've heard, it's definitely not an electric guitar. The giveaway for me is that electric guitar strings don't rattle, and the reverb isn't from a peddle. I've never come across electric guitar reverb that gives the illusion of being an acoustic guitar. You can tell it's acoustic when she strums really quickly. The recording is from a tape, which can have a tinny quality, so maybe that's what's misleadingly distorting the sound, but these are acoustic guitar songs. And on Love Song, she's playing way up (or down?) on the neck, which removes a lot of the reverb on an acoustic guitar.

I learned from Ken about the tapes back in early to mid Nov. Didn't ask for the songs or mention it to anyone at all. Didn't ask him about again for another 2 or 2 and half months or right around the time your transcription came out. The only song i've gotten from ken was one he offered to me not the other way around. Never asked to be included, so I can't be bitter that i wasn't. I didn't go running my mouth (or my keyboard with transcriptions) or make copies of it for other people (some who obviously can't be trusted i.e. the myspace stuff). Ken has been totally mum on the situation from the get go so i think you are the only one that fits the desciptions above.

Most of the folks on the board are reasonable folk who if it was stated that they would be taken care of and not jerked around would have been more than happy to wait for whatever your grand plan was. The only comment they got from you was "They aren't mine to distribute". That is sure to engender lots of goodwill. Like i said above, in the abscence of facts folks make assumptions and the general consensus forming was that you were a hoarding douchebag. This was a notion that could have been easily dispelled.

And like shmoopy said, you were basically being asshole to him/her and shmoop didn't deserve it. I don't care if i offend you and you take your ball (or songs) and go home, act like a schmuck and you'll get treated like one.

Love Song

This is another story about love
What a surprise
What* these things keep adding up
What a surprise
This is another story about love
And I don’t care if you want to hear it
Cover your ears and close your eyes
‘Cause this is another story about love

Nothing comes when you need it
Nothing ever just arrives
And you can light a million candles
But nothing shows from outside
And you can write a hundred love songs
And you can play them every night
And you can make yourself ready
But you might be waiting your whole life

So this is another story about love
I don’t care what you think of it
Cover your ears and close your eyes
Cause it is another story about love

And I don’t recommend it
If you’re asking my advice
You should learn to live without it
You shouldn’t have to learn your lessons twice

But I’m falling in love
I don’t care if you don’t like it
Just like always, I’m in love
What a surprise
It’s nothing new, I’m just in love
What a surprise

I started feeling yesterday
And it’s only gotten worse
They used to tell you love’s a blessing
But now I know it’s a curse

‘Cause I’m falling in love
And I don’t care if you don’t like it
This is another story about love
‘Cause I wanted to be the first one to tell you
That I loved you the first time I saw
And I loved you the last time too
I just didn’t know it until two days ago
And my resolutions are all shot to hell

So this is another story about love
What a surprise
What* these things keep adding up
What a surprise
This is another story about love
This is another story about love
Just another story about love

whoever has these tapes - let's get them out there so us fans can download them and FINALLY have the end-all to Girly Sound...
Yes. Those four sound great. It is just the four so far, right? Unless Liz or management has objected, the magnimous thing to do is to make all of it available as soon as possible, preferable in lossless (flac/shn) form at a site like dimeadozen. mp3s are fine of course, and inevitable, but the material deserves eventual lossless dissemination.

I doubt those tapes have been through little hell... Lossless would be nice, but it's not like the originals were that great of quality anyway, right? So I wonder what Gev is talking about. Is there "better than Exile" material out there? I think it's actually a good idea (like I've said before) to keep them coming in small portions... I wouldn't want to be dumped with 100+ songs at one time... you don't get the chance to appreciate each and every song. look at how we've went on and on about a few of the songs. I know I can wait.

Love Song

This is another story about love
What a surprise
What* these things keep adding up
What a surprise
This is another story about love
And I don’t care if you want to hear it
Cover your ears and close your eyes
‘Cause this is another story about love

Nothing comes when you need it
Nothing ever just arrives
And you can light a million candles
But nothing shows from outside
And you can write a hundred love songs
And you can play them every night
And you can make yourself ready
But you might be waiting your whole life

So this is another story about love
I don’t care what you think of it
Cover your ears and close your eyes
Cause it is another story about love

And I don’t recommend it
If you’re asking my advice
You should learn to live without it
You shouldn’t have to learn your lessons twice

But I’m falling in love
I don’t care if you don’t like it
Just like always, I’m in love
What a surprise
It’s nothing new, I’m just in love
What a surprise

I started feeling yesterday
And it’s only gotten worse
They used to tell you love’s a blessing
But now I know it’s a curse

‘Cause I’m falling in love
And I don’t care if you don’t like it
This is another story about love
‘Cause I wanted to be the first one to tell you
That I loved you the first time I saw
And I loved you the last time too
I just didn’t know it until two days ago
And my resolutions are all shot to hell

So this is another story about love
What a surprise
What* these things keep adding up
What a surprise
This is another story about love
This is another story about love
Just another story about love

Well in my opinion...I'm pretty sure it's "But.".

There's many people, myself included, who already think that the Girly Sound material is better than EIG. I'm in total awe of these songs-they're pure genius. It's hard not to listen to them and wonder where Liz's inspiration went (yes, I know that's a whole other can of worms....)

There aren't 100+ songs.
The tapes actually haven't been through any kind of hell, from what I understand.
As far as "better than Exile"... that would be based on whether or not you like the songs themselves. As far as I can tell, Miss Mary Mack, Valentine and Love Song are being enjoyed and leaving people salivating. I think it's safe to say when everyone hears some more, like Thrax, they'll feel the same way.
...and then when you hear Clean, you'll simply say "holy fucking crap."...

They really are worth waiting for.
