yeah, felt mountain is good. but the rest of goldfrapp's work is frothy dance music. i love details, such great songs, especially the heartbreaking "hear me out". i also love "breathe in".

Yes well Frou Frou doesn't have "rest of" because they've made one album and have no plans to make another.

I'd say "dance music" is a pretty debase term, they oscillate from trip-hop to some groovy detroit house tunes. I'd say frothy is a nice word though, alot kinder than pithy.

first listen to be your own pet is best. seeing them live is probably an amazing experience. that's because this band is about energy. that's what their music strives for. it's what their music thrives in. without seeing them flop around like insane kids or without that initial assault on the ears, if you've been listening to them for days or weeks, they'd amount to sheer noise. not that it's bad, it's quite extraordinary actually. combining the sass pop of riot grrrl bands and the frenetic, fatal force of a tornado, be your own pet's debut is catchy and brief, the way punk records should be.
we left yesterday
they play all over nashville, where they're from. but they actually broke big in europe before their record came out in the states. their young too. the music scene in their town is big.
mcv
yeah. nme loves them. i guess, they remind the brits of elastica and the whole riot grrrl thing. i love them in small bursts. i can't listen to them the whole way through for fear of going deaf.

Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes.

The title track is spellbinding, and earthshaking.

goldfrapp is good.

That annoys me.

Not really albums today, just these mainly:

Tori Amos - Tear In Your Hand.
...Had to listen to it when I woke up this morning.
Tori Amos - Precious Things, Live 1992 JJJ FM.
...Had to listen to it when I got in.
Tori Amos - Honey, Live KFPA Berkeley 1994.
...Had to listen to it now.
mcv
why does it annoy you? syntax? rhyme? what?

"Goldfrapp are good", not "Goldfrapp is good.".

Y Kant Tori Read?

There's something in her eye....you know it happens everytime.

No, it's "Goldfrapp is good."

Goldfrapp is one entity. You could say "Alison and Will are good."

YES smile.gif
LightYears
Goldfrapp is a name used for collective musicians, a band name. Therefore plural.
Allison Goldfrapp is one person, singular.
QuieroPhair
No.

The word Goldfrapp is singular. If there was an article that implied there is more than one member, then you would say are.

For example:

Sonic Youth is amazing.

The Like are amazing.
phairphreak
But there ARE more than one member. laugh.gif

But there is more than one member, and we know that, so we say "are" because it's the name of more than one person, it's the band name. It's a group.
QuieroPhair
Two people.

One band.

Besides, it is accepted to say "is," everyone says "is" and saying "are" is awkward, makes you sound like a git, and is gramatically incorrect because the subject is singular.

THE SUBJECT IS SINGULAR. Goldfrapp is one thing.

You dont say "this carrot are awesome."

You dont say "this candle are really cool."

You don't say "my vidalia onion are awesome."

This band is awesome.
Goldfrapp is awesome
My band goldfrapp is awesome.
we left yesterday
i agree. only when the band name itself indicates something plural should you use are. otherwise you use is. you wouldn't say the the are good would you?

i.e. pearl jam is good (for use of is)
i.e. sugarcubes are good (for use of are)
mcv
yeah, i agree with QP. goldfrapp - collective. i meant it as such. therefore, the is. it's like sonic youth is one of the best bands in america or is giant drag a good dream pop outfit.. i think light years is just pregnant.
LightYears
Americans argueing about grammar.

laugh.gif
phairphreak
They are correct.

Goldfrapp is great. If you talk about the members of the band, then... the members of Golddfrapp are great (but your subject-verb is ‘members are’). Otherwise, the band members work together as one unit.

And there is no E in arguing Smartypants. tongue.gif
LightYears
I asked for another opinion.

So here I'm sitting in my car at the same old stoplight. says:
Ahh you see that's the endless debate! Personally I say "are" cause it's they and the memberS in a band, BUT you can also say "is" cause the subject is singular.

Me, I'm sticking with "are" because of the content.

I wouldn't say "The Like is good" or "Taking Back Sunday is good" or "Sonic Youth is good". I'm just too concious of it not being one persons name to ever say "is".
mcv
haha. lys is such a condescending pregnant woman.

They're not comparable, none of those are collective names.

"This carrot" refers to one specific carrot.
"Goldfrapp" refers to two people under one collective name.

This Carrot = One carrot.
Goldfrapp = Two people.

You can't compare the two.

Make sure you read back because I argued a little more. smile.gif

shut up, bobby freak. we're right, you're wrong. get over it.

Thank you Blair.

It's completely settled then. Blair & Quierophair = right. James = wrong.
LightYears
I believe Rob is correct, actually.

Goldfrapp "are" good. Because the Members of goldfrapp "are" good.

And I think I've said they're (See, they're, not it) good too many times, I don't even like them! (See, them, not it).

Take this crap over to the “Pretentious Brits get All American Smackdown in English” thread.

The clear answer here is: Everyone is crazy. Grammar is boring.

Onto Albums... Zero 7's album "The Garden" is kick ass... their song Throw It All Away is my favourite so far cool.gif

i thought this would be different from pj harvey's solo work and therefore, i was holding off checking it out. but was i proven wrong. this is every bit as invigorating and emotionally involving as rid of me and to bring you my love.

songs like "Urn With Dead Flowers In A Drained Pool" are actually closer to the bipolar sound she created in her first two albums than any of her later work. while the spare "That Was My Veil" couldn't be more haunting.

the star of the show though is harvey's voice, the prettiest and the spookiest i've heard it. how she can go from pained to just plainly insane is just a pleasure to behold. listen to her serial killer whispers to self in "Taut" and then listen to her pitch perfect delivery of the heartbreaking words in "That Was My Veil", there's real distance there and in that distance is a fuckin' river of emotions. wait, fuck a river, it's a fuckin' ocean.

has anyone else heard this? I know there are some other "fans" here, but I haven't seen any comments about the album - or perhaps I just overlooked any conversation over the album?

no comment yet,

except that it is way more glamorous and self-aware than the last one and I am not sure I like that.

Brilliant. I had it on mp3 for months but I NEEDED the cd. Sometimes having the mp3s are enough for some people, but I'd hate that if it were an album I really loved like this one. I prefer this album over the other 2.

i like begin to hope. i prefer the girl with a piano routine she got going in soviet kitsch but this one is nevertheless spellbinding. she's got more pop songs, almost reminding me of fiona apple without the anger. i think regina's a little liz phair in her subgenre, in the way that she's an oddball. i love the new version of "samson", with the strings, which has retained its intimacy and it's a little faster paced. i also love the upbeat, girl group sounding songs like "hotel song" and "on the radio".

the more i listen to this album, the more it reminds me of apple's work with jon brion. some people are saying that it's less adventurous than her early work, that she's stripped of all the vocal oddities that made her interesting. i think it's just that there's more production. she doesn't need to do the tapping sounds because the drums are doing it for her.

Her eeriest effort to date. And her best. Heartbreakingly desolate from start to finish.
