Butterfly Boucher debuted with a sweetness and a bouyancy which made Flutterby such a pleasure to listen to. It boasted of such high powered indie pop like "Another White Dash" and to prove she's not a plastic ball of energy, there were also some emotional gems like "I Can't Make Me". Scary Fragile is not as refreshing but it's equally catchy. Those expecting a sophomore slump may find themselves in a slump of their own because this Australian singer songwriter gets it right. This is a consistently engaging album which builds on what made Flutterby a runaway success.
The songs are high energy and tuneful, saturated with clever instrumentation and lush female harmonies that criss cross. It starts on a high strung note. "I Found Out" is a sentiment from the betrayed and the singer portrays the emotion with convincing bitterness as if she's only to happy too spread the news. Boucher then proceeds to offer up break up songs, one after another with lyrics that never get too precious or overly confessional.
Even the sad ballads are more interested in pleasing your ears first and foremost. The singer never indulges in Alanis-like word-a-thons that never end about how boyfriends can be jerks. The closer, the beautiful and spare "A Bitter Song" is one of those ballads that never get dewy because of the singer songwriter's self awareness. It's basically a song that dwells on misery but is perfectly aware of how boring mere sadness can be so she sings about how writing a break up song can help her as if she's asking for permission this one time to be sad. If the results of being a sadsack is an album like Scary Fragile then Butterfly, by all means, cry me a river.
