The Tiny - Close Enough

thanks for the tiny for almost making me cry. there are so many heartbreaking moments in this that i lose count. first we have the singing, which is clear and dramatic as can be. it's not drama that you can capture with mere lyrics, you have to be a really talented vocalist, one who knows how to push buttons and she knows how to do it. she has the power to put a spell on you and make you cry. she almost did in "closer" and "for hallis". second is the cello, that weeping, mournful cello that just makes things sound so final, so much like a matter of life and death. the melodies in this little gem of an album are shattering, a grave reminder of things lost and things that are close enough.

Original Off Broadway Cast recording of "In Trousers" by William Finn (part of the "Falsettos" triology)
One of my fav shows-I mentioned it the other day & found my copy & been enjoying it again.
we left yesterday
the weakerthans - reunion

real music for real people. laugh.gif
Cherub's Ass
Lol they're from my city
So I don't know whether all the good reviews were just because they are local (sometimes it goes that way)
But my dad got the album and thinks it's quite good.
we left yesterday
they're excellent. they remind me of a more indie rock version of barenaked ladies. especially the vocals. buy the new album. you won't be disappointed.
Cherub's Ass
Lol like I just said my dad got it so I do have it! I'll give it a listen.

Kristin Hersh - The Grotto
her slowest album to date. sad, gloomy, kind of spacey, her voice can be so beautiful when singing really sad ballads. i love this album actually. it makes me feel more alone than i already am.

coolchick275
Yeah, there are a whole bunch of them up at http://www.toribootlegs.com/
So far I've bought 3, and they're all really good, but so far I think this one is the best.

A Must!!
My personal fav track is "All I Could Do is Cry" by the fabulous Tina Turner, still in her days with Ike. It tells the moving tale of Tina having to go to her ex's wedding-"AND HE WAS GETTING MARRIED TO ANOTHER GIRL!!!...THEY WERE THROWING RICE ALL OVER THEIR HEADS!!!" It is totally the way I would end up getting treated myself...Bless You, Tina!
I also love Patience & Prudence's "Tonight You Belong to Me," Eileen Barton's "If I knew You Were Comming I'd A Baked A Cake," and Mildred Bailey's "I'd Love to Take Orders from You," among other gems...

what do you get when you mix the guitars of mbv and the vocals of pj harvey, CURVE. curve is long credited by a lot as the band that the guys from Garbage stole a formula or two from. and yeah, garbage's first album is like a twin to curve's gift and come clean albums. toni's voice is hotter than shirley's. the melodies are sharper, deadlier, the guitars more overwhelmingly loud. loved this band.

Emily Jane White - Dark Undercoat

Sure, San Francisco singer/songwriter Emily Jane White has a voice that is very similar to Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and Scout Niblett but her debut album is striking enough to place her alongside these artists in terms of sheer intriguing force. Her music charts the same dark, desolate folk that the other two are known for but her work is actually fresher, sparer, purer than those other two's latest albums. The songs in her debut are mainly comprised of her guitar and her trailing voice, funereal melodies and an air of gloom that feels nice to sink under in. Like fellow 2007 debutant, Alina Simone, Emily Jane White seems to make music for people residing in the shadows of this world, not freaks but separate nevertheless.

I've had "Hits" by Joni Mitchell for awhile. I like the theme of the album cover. She also had a parallel album called Misses, which were songs that weren't "Hits", but were ones that she liked.

Missy Higgins - On A Clear Night
Her debut suffered from melodies too familiar, too unobtrusively pretty, too derivative of the whole female singer songwriter thing. This album is enough of a departure. Folky, more intimate arrangements, more bittersweet melodies, a pristine voice which has evidently matured since her annoyingly naive sounding debut album. "Peachy" is one of the standout tracks. We hear more rock snarl here than we do in her first effort. While opener, "Where I Stood" is an aching break up ballad that deserves to be in some major movie soundtrack. On a Clear Night will not change the world but it's superior work from a songwriter who is clearly growing out of her cuteness with welcome results.

both I have, I got "misses" first, I love misses more than hits, beause I am really agree that all of the songs in misses that the meaning is deeper than hits, despite my favorite track like river, the circle game is on hits

The orchestral swell is now downright dreamy, very much an improvement over the relatively spare The Great Eastern. _Hate_ is big, it sounds like it's about to take off. The songs are more sweeping. Pollock is more present, her voice stronger. The whole thing is polished but doesn't feel overproduced. The guitars are clearer and bigger than they've ever been in a Delgados record but that doesn't take away from the intimacy. The lyrics speak of some very dark emotions, the theme of the album being Hatred, of oneself and others, perhaps. It also speaks of danger, worldwide, between lovers, self destruction. The negativity is undercut by some really gorgeous sounds, choral harmonies like in the piano led "Woke from dreaming", a song which the more I listen to feels like a nightmarish dream pop song. The contrast between grandeur and realism, social concerns and its call to the listener to look inside creates an enthralling, worldly feel but at the same time, makes it seem like a thoroughly personal musical experience.

great pick, eden! I love Rasputin and Rivers of Babilon.

Mine is "The Beekeeper" by Tori Amos. I liked it a lot when I first got it, then thought I hated it. Now I love it! (Although there are still a number of stinkers- Ireland, Goodbye Pisces, Ribbons Undone)

Also it was American Doll Posse last few weeks. I'm glad that I can love a different Tori Amos album all the time.
