I don't know much about the Cranberries. There was a song called Zombie that me and my sister liked as youngsters, that's about it.

anna nalick - wreck of the day
anna nalick's debut surprised me. i read some good things about it back when it was released but i always thought it would be too easy listening, to adult contemporary and god, aren't we all tired of those? well, thank god i checked this out anyway. nalick possesses a voice which combines the deeper tones of fiona apple and aimee mann with the soft delivery of sarah mclachlan and natalie merchant. it's a voice which she puts to good use in slow songs like the title track and dreamier ones like "breathe (2 am)". the parts when nalick strays from that and goes to explore the more radio ready uptempo rock numbers are well done but she really just shines more in the ballads. still, this is an an accomplished introduction.

first thing that came to my mind was my bloody valentine, second thing was slowdive, third was lush and i eventually stopped trying to compare the band to the usual suspects of shoegaze beauty. the year zero deserves it. with a debut this beautiful, this dreamy, this lush, they surely deserve to be loved as their own entity. obviously, they are influenced, from the dizzy guitars looped backwards in "anthem" to the combination male/female harmonies, it's hard to say they're original. but this has some lovely melodies and an overall relaxing mood. yes, it is oceanic and very soft.

The Cranberries are pretty quirky yet accessible. Linger and Dreams were their big singles; Everyone Else is Doing it... is a good record; worth buying.

have you considered submitting your work to a publication or something?

she and Tori are my two favorite artists, or should i say..2 of my favorite? I kind of need all of them. I do love Tori, but she feels a bit distant to me. It's possibly because she's like a chameleon.

I haven't given Vespertine a good listen through since this winter, in which I overplayed it, drawing all the ice coolness and echoing across the snow around here. I've been listening to some of the b-sides however, which are a little warmer.

i've not given it a good listen for over a year. i should be ashamed.
i still contend that it's her dreamiest album to date and also, her best. a stark contrast to the album that followed, medulla, which on first listenings, i found to be a very difficult album. i do love that album but vespertine, for me, will always remain her unbeatable masterpiece.

Either The Beekeeper or Scarlet's Walk.
I've never really given Scarlet's Walk a really good listen until today. It blew me away, it has dethroned Venus as my current favorite.
I love the Beekeeper too, but some songs bug me.
Today I didn't like the songs Cars & Guitars, Ribbons Undone, Ireland and Witness, they bugged me, and they're all pretty close to each other on the album. Everything else I really enjoyed, but those four songs just bugged me for some reason. They might grow on me soon though.
Hoochie Woman is a lot of fun though, didn't expect to like that one.
And I'm obsessed with Barons of Suburbia, I was playing it in my room and doing interpretive dancing involving jumping on and beating up my bed. Freaky, it gives me energy.
