Sarah Blasko - The Overture and The Underscore
i used to think that sarah blasko is just a tamer version of carina round and pj harvey. but listening to this debut album now, i really believe that she's got her own appeal. yes, she's not as ferocious as those artists but her voice is beautiful. since she's australian, it's very similar to missy higgins and other alt rock females from that region. and the songs in the album are very hooky, in a contemplative way and her lyrics can be a bit too optimistic but she makes it all pass off as genuine pop rock should-be-hits. the best thing about this album is that it's pleasant background music. it seems like a condemnation but i'm saying it sounds as good in the periphery of your days as it does in your headphones. her second album has the same effect to the listener. she's probably one my favorites among the new artists recording today.

favorite songs:
sweet november, all coming back, always worth it

I should really start listening to that album, I love it.
My favorites are probably All coming back, always worth it, at your best, and perfect now.

I saw her live opening for Martha Wainwright, otherwise I never would have found out about her.

This is one of my favorite CDs ever! I love all the songs, but I especially love Haunted, Amazed, If you were here, wild...they're all such great songs though, it's hard to pick my favorites.

i should send some tracks from sarah blasko's second album to cherub's ass. it's good. there are no songs that jump out like "always worth it" but as a whole, it's more serious, even flirting with radiohead lite.

That would be great if you could send me a song!

I don't think I really like Radiohead.. well they aren't bad so much as I don't really like Thom Yorkes voice.
wooden and alone
yeah, well, sarah's voice is definitely more to my liking than thom's. i mean, the instrumentation is more akin to radiohead. her sophomore record has really beautiful guitars, like poe's haunted.

maria taylor - lynn teeter flower

ah.. maria taylor's voice, what an extraordinary listen. i put her voice up there with rose melberg, truly one of the most beautiful, sweetest, dreamiest i have ever heard. like rose, she can make it seem like she's immersed in the emotions while sounding totally spaced out. i guess, i shouldn't be this complimentary when she has this naturally. anyway, she's back with _lynn teeter flower_. her sophomore album is not really that different from her debut. it still has packets of twee pop sugar and pretty, folky ruminations. she did opt for less use of vocal layers which made her voice in her debut spectacular, like being assaulted by angels. oh wow, i'm going on and on about her voice. i can't help it, it's just so beautiful. so what about music here? okay, let's see. we have xanax part 2, otherwise known as "no stars". it has the massive guitars but none of the noctural pads of vocals. there's a track here that reminded me of the electronica, dance pop of some of the songs in her debut. "irish goodbye" has the beats and the groove and... a rap break which is okay but kind of distracting. i mean, is maria going dido on us? i hope not. it doesn't make the song less good though, thankfully. i think this album is a step forward for maria. she's definitely experimenting here but nothing big, nothing overly ambitious, smart move. one complaint though, i hate when people add a track of them singing as a kid. it's so moronic. she does here. i think it's the title track. it's cute but c'mon.

a good start

charlotte hatherley - the deep blue
it took three spins for me to fall deeply for this album. and it took a certain amount of exhaustion. i was in a state of near asleep and then listened to the song "again" from hatherley's second album and it just clicked with me. here's where she excels at, a drop dead gorgeous melody, rich vocal harmonies and an array of sounds, guitars noise, reverb, feedback and lush strings. i was stunned. i wanted to drown in the music. a more scattershot work than her debut, perhaps because she recorded this in months while the debut took two weeks. this is also less punk-y than her last effort. what she lacks in energy, she makes up with a knack for woozy melodies and swirling guitar turns. i think most of the songs here can pass off as modern dream pop. actually, the music can only be described as shredded pop music or buzz pop, if you will. it certainly reminds me of the breeders, sans the warped lyricism of kim deal. easily avoiding tired songwriting and that dreaded sophomore jinx by simply doing what she's always done right, charlotte hatherley may be one of the better things to come out of england. now, why isn't she as heralded as the long blondes? she deserves to be, perhaps more so.
standout tracks: again, behave

"Come and get me... What?!" by Imani Coppola.
This album was made after Chupacabra, it's the one that got her dropped from her label.
And it's a shame! It's full of energy, catchy hooks and is very wacky. I can see why they didn't want to market the album, (it's quite ambitious) even though it probably would have done fine.
You can hear previews for it here: http://www.imanicoppola.net/process.php?PH...D&AlbumID=3

club 8 - club 8
moving away from the chirpy melodies of nouvelle and friend i once had, club 8's self titled album proves to be a defining moment. opening with the minimalist melancholy of "love in december", never has the band sounded so good. everything seems to be in order, in tune. the female vocals are subtle and sad. the synth pads quietly along a brittle melody that never collapses under the weight of its own flow. the song is so perfectly modulated that it seems to be a downer to follow it up. but club 8 does follow up nicely. "she lives by the water" sounds like it could have been taken from a david lynch movie, what with the ominous synth and heartbreaking vocals from karolina. this whole album manages to be sad, sweet and shimmering. they'll be trying to remake this album ever since, with varied results.

I just love Carly's work from the 70s. Shame she became excessively commercial in the 80s and onwards (despite a few great songs). Her 2000 album The Bedroom Tapes is the only exception.
makesmewanto
That is hardly "the best of REM", actually its no where near. It does not cover the IRS years which were their best.

Murmur, Document, Fables of Reconstruction....the list goes on. All classic material. But new REM is um not so classic.

sally shapiro - disco romance
the synth, not particularly a new instrument but it's been setting the tone for most of the more interesting musical works of late. sally shapiro's disco romance is simultaneously warmed up and chilled down by the synth, that is the driving instrument of her album. her pretty melodies will be pedestrian if not for the presence of the unique sound. it gives her work an eighties, dance club, european edge, a sadness brought on by a supposedly cheesy noise. the breakout track here is "anorak christmas", which as far as catchy songs go is a very bittersweet. it has a punchy drumline and synth beats fall like snow, along with the singer's own gossamer delivery. it's perfectly upbeat yet it more than hints at a melancholy. most of disco romance does the same and if we're talking about the best parts, anorak christmas doesn't even compare to the pitch perfect miserablist dance anthem, "i'll be by your side" and there's the self contained synth kaleidoscope of "i know". all the nine tracks in this collection is as self assured as any club hit but also as personal and intimate as any work by some singer songwriter. some people might be mistaken to thinking this is annie version 2.0 but sally shapiro (not her real name) is way less into penning catchy tunes and more into full throttle gloom, she's the one on the dancefloor, crying, swaying into a minimalist groove.

angela desveaux - wandering eyes
oh canada. canada gave us the wonderful kathleen edwards and now, angela desveaux. angela sounds a lot like edwards, in the sense that she makes toe tapping alt country which you can easily hear on the radio. she's been endlessly compared to edwards and particularly and more often, to lucinda williams. angela nails that withering lilt in her voice. in ballads like "if only" and rootsy pieces like "familiar times", one can almost hear that it's something she's perfected. i do struggle with thinking if she fakes it. the woman probably does but her songs are lovely and tuneful enough to discard any thought of lashing back. when the opener "heartbeat" gets things started with a wistful, catchy shuffle and a nice touch of double tracked vocals, it's very difficult to think of something else other than "what a nice girl..." and it's also not a bad thing that the record smacks sweet of indie rock backing from musicians involved with arcade fire and the wooden stars.

language of flowers - songs about you
the spirit of velocity girl lives on with language of flowers. although the band more than toys with the eighties style jangle, vocalist tara simpson is almost a deadringer for sarah shannon. and the melodies, while nowhere near as memorable as the ones velocity girl used to power through, are sweet and high octane. "tara mascara", the clear standout, is reason enough to check this out. it's urgent and pretty, the way indie pop should be.
