Was anyone else at this show?

I came from Boston, Massachusetts. I saw her at Avalon, and the show was pheNOMinal. It was intimate, it was standing room, and there was dancing and it was a true Rock Club atmosphere. Let me describe my Vegas experience:

I ended up getting tickets to the HOB show last minute, and I got front row. The stage was real High up, so it wasn't that comfortable, she even made some comment about how it seemed like the audience was in a cave. At any rate... at the Boston show I made so many new friends because everyone there were true fans.. whether new or old. In Vegas, I was sitting next to a 40 something year old male who was making these obscene comments about all the things he'd do to her (of course he came alone)... and then There was the other guy in the front row with binoculars... which-- kind of freaked me out, because it was front row and god only knows what he was trying to get a better look at since we were so close. Noone was dancing, and I would have, but I did not want to block anybody's view, since everyone was sitting. It seemed like the kind of show where people just bought tickets last minute like something to do. The crowd was quiet the entire show except for Extraordinary and Why Cant I where all the couples got up and danced (or had sex.. I really couldnt make a diffence) to just those two songs. Too bad they couldn't have rocked out to her other greats... but it seemed it was just that type of crowd. It was Vegas though, and it was a learning experience for this East Coast girl.

I should've caught a California show eh?

Maybe its me, but I like shows that I can get lost in.. and enjoy the experience with the strangers beside me...

It was also her last show. Everyone seemed super drained.

She played Uncle Alvarez and one from Whip Smart for her tour manager. She played Shane. People got up and walked out.. but it rocked my shit for sure.

Anyone else there? I wish I had pictures, but they didnt allow cameras, and used metal detectors so I couldnt sneak one in either.
folderol and
Hmm, that is a bit strange.

Considering the kind of people you described there, I doubt a recording will turn up...I think that's the only time as of yet she's played "Shane" live...

*jealous* I would've died if she'd have played that at the Vancouver show! That is so not fair...

CharliesGirl-

I was at the Vegas show. I bought tickets online the day before, and I got front row seats, too! My date's son was ill and she cancelled at the last minute. I gave my extra ticket away to a friend, but he just stood at the bar all night.

The guy with the binoculars (and camera!) was sitting next to me in the extra seat that I paid for! Because he had a pretty expensive camera in plain view, I thought maybe he was working the show at first. To my left was an older guy that was a little too enthusiastic! He was hooting and gushing and couldn't sit still. I had on a leather blazer with a Led Zeppelin t-shirt beneath. I got up to get vodka several times between songs.

Liz sounded great! I always tell my friends that she can't really sing, but that the lyrics/stories/honesty are the main draw to her. However, she really pulled it off that night. The only song she very noticeably struggled with was the one she dedicated to her tour manager. I recalled that as being Shane, no?

Just to brag a little: I'm not much younger than Liz, but it made my night that she sang two verses of Rock Me looking right at me. The fact that she sounded so good, however, is what made it such a very special performance for me, though.

One question: Why no encores? I noticed a few older couples standing around... Parents of the band, perhaps? Usually the encores have included HWC and/or Flower lately, right? So, maybe she was embarrassed. But for a final show of a tour, she could have given us something.

She played "SHANE"?!?!?!

Fuck me. Why couldn't she play it at every concert?!

her singing voice is priceless, you can't teach someone to have that space between perfect pitch and god awful, but the person who started out god awful knows the difference when they try to put 'her' in the electronic mix with some maverick oldtimer from a decade before .... Liz can too sing ...

I can just image some broadway show type saying "Mr. Dylan, you'll never make it in this business until you get a vocal coach" Liz's voice is that defined these days ... (and thank God she knows how to tell broadway show types away from the 'Vegas slot jackpot'!)
CharliesGirl
I was sitting right next to the "too enthusiastic" guy! weird, you were basically 2 seats down from me. Yeah Shane was rad.

About the encore... encores are, well WERE once something that occured when the crowd cheered for more and showed how much they deserved an encore. Everyone just kind of seemed to be like "hmph, okay no encore, lets go play slots".

There was no room to dance, and the stage wasn't the average height. And the enthusiastic guy finally got up and danced to the side. Good for fucking him though. He was dancing. Like noone was watching. and THAT deserved an encore in itself.

Freddy-

Don't misunderstand, Liz has a beautiful voice. She just doesn't always succeed at carrying a tune all the way through. Let's not compare her to Streisand here. Bob Dylan has an awful voice, but he makes the best of it by at least singing in a range he has mastered. Liz's voice can be a bit shaky in damn near all but her second octave. Still, she gets points for bravery, and the vulnerability she must feel when she exposes her limits so openly.

On record, Liz has become more polished at her craft. In her Vegas performance, she pulled it off live, too. But we've all seen her TV appearances... It has always been very hit-or-miss with her.

Among others, I used to work with Ray Charles. I was very tempted to approach Liz about doing 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' on his Duets CD. But God love him, there is no way Mr. Charles would have stood for a performance that swayed from "perfect pitch to god awful" and back again.

CharliesGirl-

Mr. Enthusiastic was to my immediate left. If you were next to him, I thought you two were together. Were you wearing a long white skirt? Or do I have the worst memory ever? I had seats A11 & A12.

You are right, though, the crowd did nothing to encourage an encore. Such is Vegas. And the house lights came on almost immediately. For what it's worth, I did take a few pictures with my cell phone, but even I can't make out if Liz is visible in them!

Wow, what a small world!

I tried to register for this forum the day of the show. I wanted to try and give away that ticket and/or meet some of the posters here. I'd been lurking on this board for a while. Unfortunately, the registration link kept getting spam-blocked, and I didn't have time to address the problem before the show.

Oh, well. I'll be better prepared next time.

About the vegas show,
I came in from chicago to see Liz play.
It was my fifth show this year, I was in the second row center and I think I may be Mr too enthuusiastic, she was really putting on a good show with lots of old stuff as well as new tunes.
Anyway noone was standing up and after a few songs I just couldn't sit still any more and stood up and rocked out. The nice thing was because I was the only one standing and rocking the whole time Liz definitely noticed me and gave me a few smiles.
I think she recognized me from 2 shows in chicago I saw in one day when
I shook her hand at Millenium park and the Black Orchid.
The only thing I didn't like was the height of the stage.

Awww--she looks happy there.
Guess that was before Capitol gave her a severance package of assorted cheeses from rural Alabama..

Oh my I just like fell out of my seat. LOL.
freaky_freddy
Alabama cheese usually migrates in from Georgia or Tennessee, having been imported prior to that "from France" .... Severence cheese?

Why thank you, Lucky. This seems to confirm that Liz has played Shane live before. Thanks for digging up this topic.

Did she ever play Excallabur. All of that exposed change thats the biggest law of them all.
Lucky
I suppose this name has been kinda confusing maybe I'll change it to flap flap?
