It was a pretty fucking awesome show. the only dissapointment of the night really is that the audience chose perfect world over girl's room. she made us choose. i have heard perfect world live before and just wanted to hear girl's room. no big deal though.

liz mentioned her acoustic tour and how much she enjoyed it. she also went on to say how the reviews were funny. the reviewers said she would screw up and not even care. she laughed.

it was great meeting her after the show. i asked her how she likes people yelling out "fuck and run" throughout the whole show. she said it didnt matter cause they'll get to it anyway. i asked if thats why she leaves it till the end.

thats when she said how its hard to play what people want. she loooks out in the audience and sees two groups of people. she sees old fans that want to hear the older songs and brand new fans. "what do you do?" i asked (rhetorically mind you). she looked right at me and said, "you end up playing a longer show."

we told her we liked the new album cause honestly im happy with whatever she plays. her favorites to play lately are lazy dreamer and fuck and run. she seemed happy that we like the new stuff.

here is my boyfriend's site with pictures and video.

Oh I snagged one of liz’s guitar picks and her setlist too. No one else wanted it.

When she asked us to choose between Girls Room + Perfect World, I shouted "BOTH!". Wish she'd listened...but what can I say, it was a phenomenal show. First time I've seen her and it was very much worth the rainy voyage from Vancouver Island (hence the name). She played 23 songs (to my count), and only 2 off "Somebody's Miracle"!? Wild. She played over half of Exile...I found myself getting into every song regardless of its era, shall we say, just a great fucking show, she has amazing energy + sounds fantastic. Can't believe how fucked up (in a great way) her guitar playing is, very odd and beautiful. When did she ditch the Duo-Sonic though? And she has THREE Line-6 Modellers?! Did anyone even see her use one?

Can you post the set list as it was written, I know she changed it at a few points. Here's what I remember, only first 7 songs or so in order:

Stratford-on-Guy
Baby Got Goin'
Cover Song (?) She had a lyric sheet for it + said it was specifically cuz of the weather
Shitloads of Money
Rock Me
6'1"
Help Me Mary
Polyester Bride
Cinco De Mayo
Extraordinary
Mesmerizing
Explain It To Me (!!!!!!!!)
Divorce Song
Lazy Dreamer
Everything to Me
Perfect World
Never Said
HWC
My Bionic Eyes
Supernova
--
Flower
Why Cant I?
Fuck and Run

GREAT SHOW.

Thanks for the review! Sounds like everyone had a great time!

Phair ditched her acoustic guitar and plugged in for "6'1", but something was missing. The gritty gem came out like an over-rehearsed chore, not a beloved treasure.

That is so how I felt about her at Irving Plaza. Her performance was flawless, but she is so emotionally dettached (sp?) from her earlier work that it is really distracting. It's like watching a Liz Phair look alike lip synching to Liz Phair's songs.

This kind of summarizes how I felt at the show on Friday. This was my first Liz show so I was super thrilled to finally see her in concert after waiting so many years but I left feeling disappointed.
Besides the fact that there was a bunch of annoying drunk chicks standing in front of me who talked through the entire show...
It seemed like Liz was totally disconnected from the audience, like there was a barrier between her and us. She still seems uncomfortable with stage banter and at the end of the show it seemed like she couln't wait to get off the stage. Her vocals were perfect, although they were much too low, as was her guitar-she was drowned out by the rest of the band. But her performance felt hollow to me, like she was simply going through the motions, there was no passion in it.
That's just the way I felt about it. I'm glad to see that other people enjoyed the show.
I also travelled all the way from the island to see her-not sure if I would do it again, though. I was glad that she played "Explain It To Me"-that was the highlight of the show for me.

This is just my two cents here. I was not at this concert and I don't know what the mood or the enthusiasm of the crowd was like, but I just listened to the two audio clips that sassbot provided and although I can hear Liz singing, I hear more annoying audience conversations and laughter going on than Liz's voice. If I were a performer and the audience was more interested in conversing, or as shmoopy said, being annoying and drunk, than I'd be pretty disconnected too. If what I hear from those audio clips is any indication of how rude and inconsiderate that crowd was toward Liz and her music, all the conversations and laughter, I'd probably just be "going through the motions too". If I'm way off base here, I apologize, but when I go to a concert, I go to listen to the performer and enjoy good musical vibes not to get drunk or be obnoxious and rude.

First off, I missed the link w/ the videos etc when I initially responded. Thanks for that!

As for the criticisms of her cardboard cut-out nature, I didn't really see it that way -- keep in mind it has been 12+ years since Exile, her life has changed and she can't sing those songs as if she wrote them yesterday. She still clearly, at least from where I was standing, enjoys playing them, and appreciates the crowd response (and the crowd *did* respond, everytime the next song identified itself -- yes, there were lots of drunk chatty people in attendance, I can't disagree, but I didn't think Liz seemed offended).

Hmm! Interesting how two people can have such radically varying impressions of the same show. I'm sorry you didn't have more fun. sad.gif Where abouts on the island are you from?

I'm from Victoria-how about you? I wasn't just referring to the older material... I don't know. I'm not sure what I was expecting, I just didn't feel any warmth in her performance.
It actually reminded me of when I saw kd lang in concert last year-a totally different performer, but I left with the same feeling. kd's performance was technically perfect but it just seemed so staged. Even her anecdotes and banter on stage were carefully choreographed. She performed a cover of Jane Siberry's "Love Is Everything" that night, and it just seemed so dead... in contrast I was lucky enough to see Jane in concert later that year. Jane performed the same song and the intensity of it blew kd's version out of the water.
I guess because I've been waiting 11 years to see Liz in concert the actual experience was very anticlamctic. Kind of like seeing the Pixies on their reunion tour as well.
I can totally see how other people would've enjoyed the show. I was there with my ex-bf who isn't much of a Liz fan. He really liked the show and couldn't get over how good she looks for her age.
Ah, well. Maybe I'm just too critical for my own good. dry.gif

i dont think she was disconnected at all. she has a ridiculous full smile on her face through every song. she made so much eye contact i thought i was getting a personal concert.

and i swear to god that her eyes started to water during two songs. one was lazy dreamer. she was so happy that people were responding to it. there was one after that but i cant specifically remember which one. it was an older one,....might have been fuck and run.

edit: i felt the same way at the pixies concert and i can see how you might feel that way about liz. as much as she says she's over her stage fright, she's not totally over it. hence the "thank you for singing along. it totally helps me," comment.

I actually think that's part of the reason I found her performance so disconcerting. The grin makes sense when she's playing a song like "HWC", however, I felt it contradicted the emotional content of other songs.
Some artists are able to really embody their songs when they perform them-Liz doesn't seem to be one of them.
sassbot
well i didnt literally mean every song. but even if she was, can you blame her? she's singing the songs with the knowledge she has now. when she sings "fuck and run" she knows that she probably isnt going to be alone for the rest of her life. she doesnt feel that urgency in her romantic life, but she still appreciates the song and where it came from.

i was actually just reading another thread about a show from this tour and she said she actually likes when people talk. she's so weird.
