I couldn't think of just one, so I picked 3;
Heather Nova - Glowstars.
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes.
(Before anyone gets smart and says "Y KANT TORI READ?", they should realise that was the band's album. Not a solo Tori album.)
Jewel - Pieces of you.
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville

If we can't use Liz than Thea Gilmore - Burning Dorothy.

If its any consolation I meant to take Avril's name off the throw up inducing list. She isn't horrible. I actually like a few of her songs.
What does Diana Degarmo Cd's sound like? I never liked her on Idol.

I only watched AI season 3.Then it got corny.
Here's my review for Diana DeGarmo's "Blue Skies"
One question comes to my mind:Why didn't she win American Idol Season 3?I have no clue. She has a great voice and the music she makes is really good. She deserves more credit. The only problem I have is that she doesn't write her songs. However, the songs on the album are all unique."Dreams" is,though odd for me to use these words, beautiful."Till You want Me" has to be my favorite song on the album."All I Never Wanted" and "Cardboard Castles" are my next two favorites."Dream,Dream,Dream" is either a wasted effort or an album filler."Then I Woke Up" chronicles the dreams of being a celebrity and having all the good stuff. You will love this album, trust me.

there's nothing pretentious about martha. hell tori is more pretentious than martha and tori isn't even that pretentious. really, you are missing out on the best cd of the year. she easily is the best female act to come out this year.

i like abra moore's strangest places. but it's not a debut. in sing though, her voice was noticeably lower. i don't know which her real voice is, that high pitched honey or that low rumble. i love to think it's the former. i love four leaf clover and happiness.

No, having a song on your debut called "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" is pretentious. It's like having a song on your album called "LOOK ATTENTION STATEMENT."
And I allready bought my best 3 albums of the year....Redbird, Beekeeper, Year of the meteors.

That made me laugh.
I could hear Martha saying
"I have a song called bloody motherfucking asshole and it's brutally honest! I'm not pretentious in the least! Please don't put me in a box!".

no i don't own redbird. i don't plan on paying $35.00 for something that may well be crap (it's heather nova so i already know

). and yes the martha song is brutally honest. she's not holding back and she's not censoring herself. she's being blunt in a p.c. age where that isn't allowed. i don't call that pretentious. i call writing a song about your washing maching and trying to pass it off as high minded art pretentions (yes you kate bush). and i also call someone from detroit trying to act british with an accent and all pretentious (yes you madonna). what i don't call pretentious is martha wainwright. basing pretentiousness based on one song isn't really cool dude.

Yay, you've seen the light.
I don't think she's neccessarily "Radio-friendly", but I do think she's pop from the few songs I've heard. She's more "Singer songwriter adult contempary."

i can't say she's adult comtemporary, but i do see what you're getting at. i usually hold that title to artists like dave matthews, rob thomas, or sheryl crow. she reminds me of a rockier version of her brother. you are making some good points though.
