gregg araki's pop art portrait of teenage nihilism is surprisingly still potent, in terms of color and flamboyance. the soundtrack is still pretty good. the young people in it is a who's who of the d list. it's fun, sexy and wild. love it.

thanks to baud for sharing this with me. i love holofcener's versions of chick flicks and this one is just as good as walking and talking and friends with money. it stars catherine keener, giving yet another finely modulated performance of a contemporary woman swinging from disappointment to alienation. emily mortimer is endearing (and shows off her bush) and brenda blethyn is as always a soft chewable center. the best part is the little african american girl who is in the center of the dysfunctional family of women. the dialogue is bittersweet and sharp. the characters are charming but flawed. great movie.

I love all three of Nicoles movies Marlon.

I think I freaked my Pop Culture professor out when she showed a clip from this movie when I said I had seen it because previously I had stated I had never seen The Matrix and that was supposedly just unheard of! laugh.gif

Kate, Jamie Lee Curtis was in Prom Night. It ws during her reign as horror queen.

Oh, that's right. I think Linda is in "Hell Night," which I think is basically the same movie...

i think i'm gonna watch party monster, jeff. i wanna see how you spent your twenties.. lol

nicole holofcener rules. she should make more movies. she's a great dialogue writer.
phairphreak
EXACTLY!

There is never a false note in her characters conversations.

I still laugh thinking about the sponge scene in Walking and Talking. laugh.gif

Good movie-more like people I knew in my 20's-I was too much of an alternarocker to be a club kid, but had a few boyfriends who were.

how many boufriends?!?!
lol

Smart People
i actually like the set up of this movie. a english teacher, widower, not over the death of his wife, is growing bored of his life meets a woman who starts to change his life and that of his daughter's. it's a pretty cute scenario with appealing actors doing familiar work. that guy from sideways in another not quite middle aged bum role. ellen page, sarcastic as always, as the buttoned down, smart girl. dennis quaid as the old man who doesn't look old. sarah jessica parker as the girlfriend who is entirely too sensible for this dysfunctional situation. they're all cute and perfect for an indie movie. the trouble starts when you start seeing the whole thing spinning into a happy ending. not that there's any other way this kind of movie can end. for the most part, i was entertained by the film and for the most part, the whole movie's point (smart people can be reallllly stupid) is not sickening but we've seen it all before. also, the acoustic folky soundtrack was kind of ddddddone.

robin tunney gives an extraordinary performance as a teenager suffering from tourette's. her dramatic tour de force drives the otherwise aimless lovers in the run flick to depressing levels. of course, the filmmakers are merciless with her. the ending makes me want to hate the whole movie. but the story is well told enough. bonnie and clyde with a neurological disorder in the side.

lol

Well, I had a stream of "boyfriends" around my age in my late teens/early 20's. Then I went out with my first real partner for 3 1/2 years. Then I went out with this total asshole for 6 months. Then I went out with another loon for about 2 months & he became a stalker. Then soon after I met my present partner & we have been together for 13 years now.

FYI-I am on Super Stress Mode lately with my work-I get real sharp & don't suffer fools gladly in this mode (not meaning anybody here, but my patience is pretty thin in general), so if I sound bitchy with y'all lately I apologize in advance.

i want to see i want to believe again. i can't get the movie or the show out of my head.

i read that movie flopped big. i was saddened by it. i was hoping gillian have a big movie in her belt again. but i am so gonna watch it as i read scully has a bigger part in the movie than mulder. she's terrific.
phairphreak
It made 10MM this weekend and had a budget of only 30MM. It will have no problem turning a profit. The makers knew who they were going up against. I think they made that movie for the fans knowing they would be alright. Kind of the celluloid equivalent of a Tori cd.
wooden and alone
ah good. although i wanted gillian to be out there in a big way. ah well, she has gotten more exposure for this movie than anything she's ever done since the series.

Walking and Talking
this is actually nicole holofcener's best movie, i think and it's her first. it's like her exile in guyville. and it's still pretty fuckin fantastic now as when it was released. it's still relevant and fresh and funny. from the scene with the mole (give me back my mole!!!) to the cat chemo, it's very sweet and sad and true.
wooden and alone
Less Than Zero

never read the book but the movie was okay. robert downey junior was really good but it felt a little too eighties, kinda cheesy. very entertaining though.
katefan4
^Well, Fub, that movie was made in the 80's.
The book is like a Million times better-I actually love the novel-but, I like the movie in it's own way, too. I love Jami Gertz & agree that Downey is really great in it. Jami said the shoot for that was very difficult in a good interview I read with her.
I saw that on the opening weekend it came out back in the day so have really good memories of that movie.

walking and talking is so freakin quotable

do we have to listen to this vagina music?
YES!

guess what i'm listening to? music to slit your wrists by

give me back my mole!!!!!!!

that movie is so perfect and true. great execution from all the actors, especially anne and catherine. weird, anne's voice wasn't weird here. she has sounded weird ever since.

I am glad you loved it Fub, it is one I try to suggest to people because I know they have not seen it.
wooden and alone
i saw it back when it was released on vhs. heh. and i was a bit too young to appreciate it this way. it's so good. i also loved how go west was used. she was stalking the ugly guy. lol

watched

Saving Grace
i love brenda blethyn. it's so hard not to root for her. she just adds a sweetness to every role she picks. saving grace is about a woman who loses her husband and is left in debt so she does what every widow in the situation would do: sell marijuana. the film is a bit slapstick in parts and the pop soundtrack is annoying to say the least. but it's entertaining enough.

i got dragged to mama mia. hands down the worst movie of the year so far. i think i would rather sit through there will be blood again. and that movie was atrocious. as for mama mia, what a trainwreck. and meryl streep looks so old. she's not that great of a singer. most of the people aren't. i can't believe i want to believe is being beaten by this turd of a movie.
wooden and alone
mama mia does look like a big gay stinker.

although i'd watch meryl in anything.

there will be blood is a masterpiece.

saw Malice
the 1993 new england noir with nicole kidman, alec baldwin (hot and hairy) and bill pullman. this was really surprisingly entertaining now that i bother to watch it closely. yeah, there's a red herring in the plot that is kind of infuriating but still, good performances and saucy, suspenseful story. nice.

atom egoyan's film about an insurance adjsuter is just about as weird and hypnotic as anything by david lynch but unlike lynch's movies, this is purely grounded in reality. that doesn't make the whole thing any less difficult to decipher. it's scary and has some great acting. the leisurely pace begins to develop into a sexuality which is almost dreamlike. i have no idea what it's about.

there will be blood was boring and totally overrated. daniel day lewis did what he always does. one note to me really. but as bad as it was it's nothing compared to mama mia. you really hit the nail on the head. meryl streep is embarrassing to watch really. don't bother. i've always wanted to see malice. i may have to find that one on dvd.
phairphreak
WLY, just because TWBB is not your type of movie, don't classify it as bad. That's not fair at all.

And before you say "I'm not saying that because of that, blah blah blah...." Give us an example of dramas that you think are great. Not action pics w/ drama in them and not comic book stuff. Dramas.

ok, here you go:

no country for old men
husbands and wives
charlie wilson's war
saving private ryan
schindler's list
two letters from iwa jima
flags of fathers
steel magnolias
murphy's romance
jfk
gone with the wind
to kill a mockingbird
heat
on golden pond
the bad seed
a simple plan
city of angels
far from heaven
the prince of tides
michael clayton
good night and good luck ( i really like this one a whole lot)
lost in translation
boogie nights

there may be a couple in there that might not be considered the greatest, but i liked them. i did try though to find dramas that not only did i like, but are also considered really good by a lot of people. and it's not that there will be blood isn't my type of movie. i actually like the director and was sort of looking forward to the movie. i was highly disappointed. to me, it was a bad film.
wooden and alone
i thought i wouldn't like there will be blood but it pulled me in. it was bleak as fuck but compelling. daniel day lewis was breathtaking.

well, at least, you liked some really good dramatic movies.

saw Party Monster.
i held off seeing this because i thought culkin can't pull this off but he was really good. better was seth green. they were fabulous. the movie is one colorful, scary mess. the eighties must have been fun and ruthlessly bloody. i love the soundtrack. i must hunt it down.
we left yesterday
i'm sure there's more, but i always find it hard making lists like that. in fact there is one that i forget. driving miss daisy was also really good. i just like anything jessica tandy has done.
wooden and alone
wly's got a boner for jessica tandy. omg!

just kidding, i do love driving miss daisy too.

Yeah, I was surprised how GOOD both of them were! And Diana Scarwid is so fab as Michael's Mom-I love her. I actually think the main part of that story actually took place in the early 90's (in real life), but "the eighties" kind've stretched on till about 1993 or so anyways. The heydey of those really great danceclubs seemed to end middle 90's when they really started cracking down. And, of course, after 9-11, New York especially really shut down a lot of that type of nigthlife.

every time i think of seth green i think of robot chicken now.

for your consideration

man, this was funny. catherine o'hara is a genius. so is christopher guest, really. this is one hilarious romp. when they're showing the posters... lol
this is probably one of the more serious movies by guest. serious because it feels less silly, more strident. it's kind of angry and sad, beneath all the laughs. like catherine o'hara's character is not a one dimensional role, she kind of made me cry. there's also keen insight to parker posey's role and her relationship with another actor, when one succeeds and the other doesn't. it's just very incisive and very sharp and very very very funny.

Just rented:

Borat (never saw it)
Jack Ass II ( for something to be on that I don;t have to pay attention to)
The Lookout (have rented before and never got around to)
Persepolis (see above)

It is going to be a very hot and humid weekend, so I think I may be able to take in a few of these.

Wanted

surprisingly, i found myself really enjoying this action thriller. it's almost surreal in its vulgar display of effects wizardry and violence. angelina jolie is always effective when playing a kickass bitch and she's especially kickass and bitchy here. her pout serves her well in this role. james mcavoy, what a hot fuuuuuuuck. oh wow. ::objectifies tumnus::

The Lookout - Good, not great. But I do wanna smooch on JGL fo' shizzle.

joseph is in some new spike lee movie. anyway, i saw the x-files: i want to believe. what an execellent drama and excellent creppy thriller. so interesting for a summer film from hollywood to be so adult and so anemic in terms of action and all that. it has action, but nowhere near typical summer movies. like wanted for example. i loved i want to believe even more the second time.

the x-files: fight the future

i have to trot out this fantastic movie every now and then to watch. the more i watch it the more i think it's probably the best movie i've seen in the last 10 years.
wooden and alone
i love gillian and all but man, you gotta branch out. stop watching movies twice in a row. watch something else then watch x files again. LOL

well brace yourself cause i saw the x-files: i want to believe yet again. it wasn't the plan, but oh well. biggrin.gif i'd branch out but there isn't much to branch out to see at the local multiplexes around here. they're pretty much the hollywood blockbuster stuff. i opted for something though that wasn't that. sorry, but around me branching out at the mulitplex, which pretty much all we have, is hard to do. even harder when it's not your choice. but then again if someone's willing to pay me to see the x-files again i doubt i would say no. biggrin.gif

classic altman. funny, sad, scary. i don't know all the actors in it though which works for the best, i think. i love barbara jean, the diner girl forced to strip, lily tomlin, carradine guy who is hot.. so fuckin loaded with great stories. rip altman.
