living in oblivion
really funny movie about indie movie making. catherine keener was so beautiful and she has armpit hair. so refreshing. heh. ooooh so french. steve buscemi's hilarious. the whole movie is just so funny and fresh, over a decade after its release. a classic holds up.

catherine keener's got a new movie coming to theaters soon. i saw the poster at the multiplex or whatever they call it these days. it's called hamlet 2.

Well I saw Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog act one not a movie I guess but amazing of course. With Neil, Nathan and Joss involved I guess I could not, not love it *overdoses on geek happiness".

KLUTE

why the hell was this film called klute when the lead is bree? anyway, the movie got kinda abit longer than necessary but it's nevertheless filled with tension and the sexual charisma of jane fonda who rocks the weird hair and the boho wardrobe with aplomb. i love her voice too. when she's going on and on to her therapist, i can't help but think that her voice is sooooo classy yet sexy.

BARBARELLA

hmm, jane fonda was totally hot. still is but this was the peak of her sexual allure. she is perfect as the title character. the movie is too ridiculous to discuss. from pygar the angel to duran duran (d?) and matmos and tonguebox and other heavy wacky shiteousness, i see its camp value, if a bit zero cinematic substance. that guy was hairy though. oh man... yum.

lol gay
katefan4
^I want those dolls with the metal teeth...
I would sick them on YOU...
And, of course, Duran(2) took their name from Milo O'Shea's character.
Love the Orgasmatron...
I think I've seen that movie about 20 times.

It is a little slow, but Jane more than desreved her Oscar-she's amazing.
I thought Donald Sutherland was so handsome at that point.
wooden and alone
yeah, he was definitely handsome at that point. by don't look now, he looked weird.

those dolls were creepy but funny. i love that barbarella was always being bitten, birds and dolls and she's always bloody. the movie is warped and the soundtrack was funny. she ruined the orgasmatron. lol

Well, I think he had that curly afro 70's hair for Don't Look Now. That's a good movie, too.

Totally awesome movie! So funny! Jess Weixler has all the teen-girlisms down perfectly. If you cut out the part about having vagina dentata, the emotions and feelings expressed by Dawn are kinda relatable.

the dark knight. oh jeez! if only they made every summer film like this. the best film i've seen this year so far. all the oscar talk is so well deserved.

Funny Games.

Or do you mean 'why did it have to end that way?'
I liked it.

I must say I preferred Ken Park to any of the other bits of films I've seen by Larry Clark. Mind you it was banned here so everyone of course wanted to see it. But I've never watched Kids and I think I stopped watching the second film he did because I was just too disgusted.

It's funny Katefan because I've been watching Marx Brothers films too recently!

the only larry clark film i've seen was bully. i was rather disgusted with it. i thought renfro did a decent enough job, but i only saw it once and never had the desire to revisit it.
wooden and alone
bully was so much better. it's depressing and grimey but it has a story. i love that movie as much as anyone could love a film like it.

ken park is just too fuckin aimless. it's dirty. one kid masturbates and you can see his semen. yuck. so fuckin ugly. the kids are ugly!
lol

i can't say if it was better or not. i do agree there was a story. it just wasn't one i cared enough to revisit.
phairphreak
You are not supposed to want to see moves like that more than once. Unless you are a psycho killer.

Funny Games was way too too. The acting was either overe the top or way too restrained for what was going on. Pointless and unnecessary.
baudrillard
I'm surprised WLY isn't cuing it up now then.
cherry_queen
i've been subjected to watch that John Adams mini series on HBO if that counts as a movie......it's actually fairly interesting..i was surprised that i actually sat through three episodes. but now that i've invested this much time in it i'm actually going to watch it. ha.

I saw it last night. I was worried it was going to be over-hyped, but I loved it. Heath Ledger was fantastic.

i shot andy warhol
fascinating portrait of valerie solanos, the woman who did shoot andy warhol. he survived of course. she on the other hand got sent into a mental hospital and was homeless upon release. the movie paints her as a militant feminist and more than a little insane. lily taylor portrays her the best way she knows how. she's a tough little actress and her performance is restlessly entertaining. bleak as it is, the movie is funny and shows just how crazy the whole warhol set was. sad how many people involved in the scene met tragic ends. also, how weird is it that stephen dorff's best moment commited to screen is as a transvestite. he is unrecognizable as candy darling and he has a sweetness about him in this film which is nowhere to be seen in anything else he has ever done.
phairphreak
While I thought the movie was so-so, the soundtrack is excellent.

1. Season Of The Witch - Luna
2. Do You Believe In Magic - The Lovin' Spoonful
3. Love Is All Around - R.E.M.
4. Burned - Wilco
5. Itchycoo Park - Ben Lee
6. Sunshine Superman - Jewel
7. Mais Que Nada - Sergie Mendes And Brasil '66
8. Gimi A Little Break - Love
9. Sensitive Euro Man - Pavement
10. Kick Out The Jams - MC5
11. I'll Keep It With Mine - Bettie Serveert
12. Demons - Yo La Tengo
13. I Shot Andy Warhol Suite - John Cale

Meanwhile Fine Line Features Movie Publicity has this photo of Liz on their page for the film.

pretty good. better than i expected. the film takes its time to make you invested in the lives of these two people. ryan was great as the teacher but i think the girl was equally mesmerizing. why wasn't she nominated? i love the ending. it doesn't pretend to be overly optimistic but it's sweet and makes you hopeful for them. great soundtrack too. very shoegazey

Mamma Mia! It was alright, I guess. Colin Firth was the best part of the movie.

the dark kight again. this time in a regular theater. not as easy going the 2nd time around. the movie and especially heath ledger's performance is very unsettling. especially for a summer movie. about a day or less till i want to believe opens.

You know, I could have seen the live show of that so many times & just never had the interest...I'm really not a huge ABBA fan, either.
phairphreak
I saw it and was thoroughly not impressed. I am not quite sure how it became the behemoth it has. But, there are a ton of people out there that simply love ABBA (older than us) and there are a ton of people out there that love going to the theater regardless of what’s playing. The same will not translate for the movie version though. The ABBA fans saw it in it’s first week, people who simply love movies aren’t going to be putting that one very high on their list. I mean, I don’t think there are many people out there saying “I just have to see the new Pierce movie”.

Movie musicals are hard to pull off and I can only think of a handful that I have enjoyed. Chicago being my favorite.
katefan4
^See, I don't like the movie version of "Chicago," either, Phreak...Jones is wonderful, but I saw the BEST tour from the Broadway revival (and we had killer seats) & it really ruined the movie for me. You probably would have loved this production.
I just think the state of Musical Theatre is really kind've sad at the moment. To me, "Mamma Mia" seems more like a revue with ABBA songs-not a legitimate book musical. I know that sounds so snobby, but I really hate shows like that-they really pander down. BUT, that's what the public seems to want now. I saw scenes from that "Spring Awakening" on tv & I just don't understand the appeal of that at all-it seemed so amateurish.
As for ABBA-I actually do think they were mega talented, BUT I worked with a couple of people who PLAYED THEM TO DEATH...I honestly can't listen to them anymore....
phairphreak
Oh contraire Sugar Bear – it was Renee who floored me in Chicago. That woman is so freaking talented it’s unbelievable.
katefan4
^I don't care for her at all, but you & I have really different taste. Nothing bad, meaning mainly you really enjoy modern movies and stars, and I just honestly don't much.

what is really strange is how so many musicals on broadway are being based on hollywood films. legally blonde, xanadu, the wedding singer, hairspray, and the producers to name some. then you have musicals like lord of the rings and trump the musical. i heard they're doing 9 to 5 now for brodway, with a lot of dolly parton songs. this one may be good. but that is a very big maybe. still, it has the best chance of succeeding i think.

Well, Broadway (like Hollywood) is about making $, and those are the type of projects that draw people in nowadays. Do I like them? God, no! But I'm not the travelling, ticketbuying base they trying to appeal to.

the x-files: i want to believe

it's nowhere near as good as fight the future, but that's not a bad thing. cause it's not the same movie. they're two different animals and both work very well on their own level. i want to believe is a really good movie though and really engaging. it's good to get back to these characters. i was very impressed.

The Last Temptation of Christ
The first hour and a half drag by very slowly, due mostly to the sometimes wooden dialogue and overall heavy handedness. The last hour is much better, but still suffers (but to a lesser degree) from the same heavy handedness and wooden dialogue.

I really liked the way it examined Jesus' life as a man and not as a son of God. (If I can get kind of religious-y here for a second) I think it makes his sacrifice that much more meaningful and loving--he gave so much.

Of course, my parents (who are...not as open to interpretations of the Bible/Christian beliefs as I am) had to come home right at the part where Jesus hallucinates getting married and having sex with Mary Magdalene. (Sidetrack: I've never quite understood why the thought of Jesus being married and having children bothers people. I mean, he was both man and God. How does doing something that all men at the time did threaten his divinity? I don't get it...whether he was married or he wasn't it doesn't change who he was or what he did. But I digress....) Anyway, I thought my mom might have like a mini melt down and demand that I turn off the TV (usually she's the more open-minded parent, but NOT when it comes to religion. I think it has something to do with the fact that she was raised Baptist and her dad was a Baptist minister. No offense to any Baptists, if there are any).

So, overall, the movie was kind of heavy handed and not that great, but the last hour was really moving.

i love gillian anderson. definitely waiting for that.

i watched ararat. it's by director atom egoyan and he's a favorite of mine. his films have a way of unfolding that is very seductive ad slow, but kind of definitive. it's his trademark. his characters are enigmatic yet immediately relatable. ararat is no different. his assembly includes an art historian, her son who is having an affair with his stepsister, a gay actor, his boyfriend's father who is working as airport security and several other people spanning the century. at the heart of this the armenian genocide. a sad chapter in world history which is still pretty unheard of by people, which turkey still continues to deny. a movie within a movie, ararat deftly paints over the armenian genocide and draws another picture, the after effects, the conflict between young people today who have armenian blood and those who have turkish blood. as complex and loaded as the movie sounds, egoyan brought it all together with insights to his characters, all of them given intense spotlights to air their flaws and concerns. that's why egoyan is one of the best directors working today.

who doesn't love gillian anderson. she's a terrific actress and extremely beautiful. her portrayal of scully is so empowering and when the show debut was somewhat of a rare thing on t.v. at that time.

I rewatched this for about the third time the other day. I know it's rare for me to recommend a movie made within the last 15 years, but I really like this film. They did a good job recreating this period of time. I used to hang out with a LOT of "clubkid" type people & the performances are really pretty dead on. One of my first boyfriends actually reminds me a little bit of Michael Alig.

prom night (remake)
i haven't seen the original although i so should. this remake feels a bit routine slasher flick but it's got some effective scenes. the lead girl, brittany snow, is pretty but generic. i was rooting for the black girl but she dies. yes, i gave a spoiler. uh huh.

^I think Linda Blair is in the original.
