I tried watching American Crime today and ended up turning it off. It was well made and starred Ellen Page and Catherine Keener, but the subject matter was just so awful and there really was no reason for this film to be made. Pointless and borderline sadistic.

this one was better than i thought and even made me appreciate the first one more. i wasn't all too keen on the first one much. i liked it, but i wouldn't say i loved it. i think it's bit better now than i originally thought. prince caspian was also good too. i think i may have to start reading the books.

i was having a little foray to oddness. i was trying to figure out who makes weirder movies. in this case, hands down, cronenberg wins. naked lunch is a weird fuckin mindfuck. horny typewriters, horny insects, gays cavorting with bugs, bug powder addiction. i don't get the entire movie. maybe it's about writing or about something else entirely but it was a sexy, dirty, nasty, hallucinatory daze. judy davis is so hottttttttttttt!
love her.
wild at heart is perhaps lynch's most straightforward story, aside from the straight story. this is probably his idea of an all american love story. of course, he can't help but insert some oddball characters and off the wall violence and neon trashy operatic one liners. laura dern and a younger, hotter nic cage make for a great onscreen couple. she was such a cute pony here. love the scene in the rock concert when cage breaks into an eerie but sweeping rendition of that treat me like a fool song. hot!

You should try reading the book of Naked Lunch. Try watching Videodrome. Cronenberg does audio commentaries on almost all his films that are the Criterion Editions. Naked Lunch and Videodrome both have fantastic commentary tracks, same with Dead Ringers.
As for Lynch, have you seen Inland Empire yet Fub? He's never done a commentary track ever!

i've seen videodrome. another mindfuck. he really does have something for weird textures. the creatures in naked lunch, the vaginal stomach in videodrome, the pods in existenz. so weird. so brilliant.

jules et jim
somehow, i thought this was a la - di - da romantic comedy. but it's actually a french drama with a truly messed up femme fatalle. jeanne moreau was so beautiful, not in an obvious way. she was not denueve but her face is very magnetic and her character here is really complex and difficult. i can see why the two men in the film were pulled into her wild, unpredictable axis. the original score is also very lovely and sad.

lol, yeah. no laserbeams here.

this adaptation of the emily bronte classic novel is actually quite good. as always, i was swept by the selfishness of it all. just realizing, the leading lovers in this story are such fucking bitches. heathcliff is a vengeful bitch. cathy is just a weak little bitch. bitch bitch bitch! but i liked it nevertheless. juliette binoche is a strange choice because her accent slips in more often than not. but her face is hypnotic. ralph fiennes is perfect. he was so hot then.

greg araki's latest movie. this one stars the ever so funny and cute as a button anna faris as a pothead. the film follows a day in the life of a pothead on her way to hempfest. more amusing than funny but nevertheless hilarious in parts. pales in comparison to araki's mysterious skin and nowhere.

it has some sensitive gay scenes so if you're remotely disgusted, don't see it. but i found it sad and beautiful. it's about child abuse and about how two abused kids reacted differently to the incidents to cover up the pain. it was really well told.

the piano teacher
so this is basically the most lurid, most sexually explicit movie i've seen. and i've seen lots of porn. this movie doesn't show much skin. it's not even up to the nudity level of basic instinct. but what it explores, about sex and power, about self mutilation, about degradation, humiliation, sadomasochism is more naked than sharon stone has ever been. isabelle huppert plays a piano teacher who has a hidden desire to be manipulated sexually. she's repressed and closed off. but she wants to let go. she's hungry for it. and she does let go. it just doesn't go the way she needs it to. huppert is beautiful and elegant and her character here goes through some insanity and it's fantastic to witness. at the end, she pierces her own shoulder with a butter knife. why? not too clear. the film is complex and twisted. i fuckin recommend it.
michael haneke directed this. he was also behind funny games and cache. between those two and this one, he's the world's premiere examiner of human one upmanships.

I love that movie. Try to see it on the big screen, though, for the full effect.

I think that Fargo will always be my favorite, if for no other reason than it was the first Coen brothers movie that I ever saw. I still need to see a lot of their movies, though. I'll probably skip the comedies as they just don't look that interesting to me.

somersault is a beautiful, low key, erotic coming of age tale starring australian actress abbie cornish. she plays the hypnotic lead character who runs away from home when she's caught kissing her mother's boyfriend. she is mesmerizing and sexy and translucent almost. the movie is a slowburn and can feel a bit boring but it's nevertheless driven by a snowy soundtrack and a bluish hue in the cinematography. the result is kind of dreamy but also sad.
stardust memories is woody allen, black and white again, with a drop dead gorgeous charlotte rampling. nuff said.

I haven't seen "The Brood" in ages, but I remember it just being really bloddy & not very good. There is, however, a movie with Samantha Eggar you would love called "The Collector"-it's directed by William Wyler & is still so creepy & chilling.

yes! that is so true. "hot" woman today aren't near as gorgeous as woman back 20-30 years ago. or more. another great looking actress is karen allen who has aged wonderfully. sadly, these new crop of "actresses" today will not hold up as well over time. silcone doesn't. it's sad when even the actresses in movies are fake. might as well use cgi young women. it's about the same.

why do people think sienna miller is beautiful? sure, she's pretty. but put her side by side with michelle pfeiffer at the height of her beauty or even now, or julie christie or charlotte rampling or deneuve. hell, even jolie or connelly. she looks homely. this movie gives her a great role and a showcase for her to fake an american accent perfectly. she does justice to the accent. the acting is merely okay. within this stagey, chamber piece which is half jokey, half serious, mostly irrelevant, she doesn't really have much space to maneuver her potentially complex character. buscemi (who directed it as well) doesn't fare much better. it's kind of an empty exercise. it's mildly compelling in its intimacy but then you realize halfway to the movie, the intimacy provides no real human touch.

It's a clumsy film for sure but utterly fascinating as well. It's not as big a mindfuck as Inland Empire, nor is it anywhere near as affecting but again - it's intriguing. Don't ask me how many viewings it shall take to grasp every single thing that's happening in the movie however - aspects of Mulholland Dr. still remain a mystery to this day.

The Orphanage - Genuinely creepy and ultimately very moving. The woman who played the mother was excellent (and heartbreaking). I LOVED the end.
In the Valley of Elah - Tommy Lee Jones was totally deserving of his Oscar nom and Susan Sarandon made the most of her small part. It made me (very) sad and kinda angry. War is so futile and awful. What are we doing to our soldiers? It's very anti-war (but not in an in-your face kind of way); every one should see this movie.
