I have liked Liz Phair's music for several years now, and used to post on one of the older message boards. Although I had heard of her in the 90's, I didn't really get into her until 02, and thought she would not make music again. I was very disappointed by that perception, especially because "Exile in Guyville" inspired me to write some of my own song lyrics. Then, of course the commercial comeback/breakthrough happened in 03...but my interest continued, and I saw LP for the first time in concert in late 05. It was a pretty good show.

At about the same time I discovered LP, I got into another artist, Juliana Hatfield, who I suppose has been described as one of Liz's peers. To me, they have some similarities in their lyical content and indie sensibility, at least regarding LP's 90's work. However, LP seems more ironic than JH, who sounds more earnest (at least most of the time), and sings (and writes?) with more discernible feeling and vulnerability.

I'm curious to read what others think about other similar artists to LP...smile.gif

It's nice to be back on the board.

hahaha

there are some artists similar to liz, a lot actually but they never quite capture liz's perfect combination of ironic sexuality and deep emotional grip. i'm talking early liz, of course. haha

vocally, there are some similarities between liz phair and tracy bonham and poe. laura veirs and jennifer trynin also belong in that alto vocal arena. so does nina nastasia. seana carmody who was once in the swirlies also has that kind of delivery. sarah dougher and katy davidson have that normal sing talk voice too.

musically, a lot of mirah's debut album kind of remind of liz's stuff. angie heaton, containe, land of talk, don't be a stranger, lauren hoffman, hello saferide and katy rose are also reminiscent of liz.

Katy rose?o.O When i first watched the video of overdrive or whatever ,the first thing that came to my mind was Avril. i dunno what to think of her ,since i've only heard that song ...

i mean, liz phair self titled era is very similar to katy rose. heh.
actually, katy is very interesting. i prefer her over avril and skye sweetnam. her voice also reminds me of liz in that it's not a perfect voice. her lyrics though a bit rhymey and adolescent is deeper than anything avril has ever put on paper. "lemon" is a great song.
