Only one teeny-tiny correction up front: Soap Star Joe before Shitloads of Money.
It was absolutely a fantastic show. I was at the DC show too, and if you were trying to decide between the two, you shoulda gone to Philly!
She wore a black t-shirt with these metallic sleevy things (I ain't no fashion guru) and black jeans. And no ring! Beautiful as ever.
After Fine Again, she said, "I'm probably the only musician you'll meet who likes it if you talk. I'm gonna play a request, somebody already got to me earlier, but feel free to shout out what you want." Then she did Stratford-on-Guy.
After, somebody shouted out White Babies, and she said, "Oh shit, well I knew it this summer. Lemme see..." And then she did it. But after a bit, she said she forgot what comes next, and people started shouting out stuff. Then this one girl kinda to the right of center (I was dead center, about three rows of people back) apparently said something, and Liz said, "Do you want to come up here and sing it with me?" Not nasty, a genuine invitation. "C'mon, get up here! Push your way forward, they'll let you through." She started coming forward, but then I guess got cold feet. "C'mon, I'm serious! Anybody who knows me will tell you I'm serious. C'mon people, get her butt up here!"
The crowd was going nuts, but the girl (I couldn't see her) hung back. Liz said something like, "A long time ago I was invited onstage to sing by (I forget who she said, someone who knows her history better will know) and I didn't do it and I've always regretted it. C'mon! You don't have to sing, just whisper the words in my ear and I'll sing."
Well, she never did it. Liz just plugged along, did a great version of it anyway.
Later, someone asked for Mother's Little Helper, she laughed, then turned to Dino. "You know that, don't you?" "Well, kinda, with a little twist in it." They played around a little, and she said, "It's kinda like Baby Got Going but in a minor key." They didn't do it. Sometime around then as well, somebody shouted out "What Makes You Happy" and she said, "Every time I try to do that, I get stuck in the middle." She started it, saying, "It's gonna go nowhere," and then she broke off after a couple of bars and said, "And then it goes into this weirdo key, and ... " and she pretty much stopped.
Lots of laughs with and at the rowdy crowd, polled the band on who had had a Philly cheesesteak that day.
Totally thoroughly enjoyable, the best show of hers I've seen. She said at the end that she really enjoyed playing for us, and it did seem pretty genuine.
No autographs afterwards, but about a dozen of us waited at the end of the alley behind the theater, where a cab was parked waiting. She came out with Dino, waved to us, motioned her hands "Sorry" that she couldn't stop for autographs (I'll bet TLA has a security rule or something), and then the cab came down the alley slowly. When it got to where we were, it slowed down, and she got Dino to roll down the window on his side (the side we were on) and people all shouted the typical things, and she leaned over and said, "Thank you!" and that was it.
Now I'm slightly bummed--when will be the next time?!?

The band that had invited Liz to sing onstage years ago was Urge Overkill.
I was considering heading to New York to see her tomorrow night (just because I was so disappointed I didn't get to chat after the show), but I'm working late. ARGH.
Anyway, it was a pretty great show, I was dead-center (like I said I was going to be), and I brought a friend of mine who's 50 years-old and, like me, is really into classic rock. He ended up loving Matt Pond PA (how great are
they!?) and sort of liking Liz. His chief complaint was that her set seemed a little boring and "late 80s/early 90s girly pop" compared to Matt Pond. I can't say I disagree with him there, but I tried to tell him that she didn't really play her best stuff (apart from the 4-song acoustic mini-set that kicked it off, which was easily the best part of the show), and I'd have to loan him her records. Funnily enough, he bought an autographed copy of
Somebody's Miracle, which came with a 'free' copy of
Comeandgetit, for $20 in the lobby before he came in to meet me. I told him to listen to the EP first and said that I'd loan him
Exile in Guyville right away...

Anyway, I should probably start a separate thread about this, but I just want to say that I was highly, highly impressed with "Fine Again", which Liz played first by herself. I thought I had the song figured out a long, long time ago (like when the EP came out), but man, was I wrong. She plays the song in a totally different part of the fretboard than I'd imagined. I won't go into the details and bore everyone, but that song alone was worth the price of admission. It proved to me that, when she wants to, she still can sit around with a guitar and do something really creative. I gained quite a bit of respect for her as a musician last night -- no joke -- and I was not expecting that to happen at this late hour.

Last night was amazing. The only thing that sucked was that Liz had to take off after the show. I think it did have to do with TLA security, maybe because of the houses back there? Or maybe she had somewhere to go, who knows. Hopefully I'll catch another show in the next few months.

I went to the DC show and The Philly show and the Philly show blew dc away. She played so many great ongs and the crowd and liz and the band were so into it. Everybody had a blast. BEst show i have been to in a while. I was in the second row and totally got the smile and the head nod. I almost passed out.

JE, bore me. I'm curious as to how she plays this one. I'm thinking the first chord is something like X-X-0-11-10-0 (if that makes any sense, starting with the low E string), but I could be completely wrong.

Oct 17 2005, 11:28 PM
Well, dude, you're on the right track. I was starting out with a simple D chord and then augmenting it and going to A, and then augmenting that and going into like Asus2 or whatever it is, and A7 -- blahblahblah. I was totally off. Anyway, she does play it waaaay up there. You know that chord that you hear behind the phrase "hell when it's bad"? Well, there's a note that she stretched for that I swear was at, like, the 17th fret or something like that. So cool.
Unfortunately, it was so complex and the shapes were so unrecognizable to me that I can't remember anything with any certainty. This is a song for which we will seriously need a video bootleg if we're ever going to figure it out accurately.

WOW! That was a missed opportunity. I wonder if she regrets not getting up there. I was at Atlanta and the girl who was invited up did not hesitate. She got right up there and did a verse of Flower.

Forgot to ask, who did I meet from this board behind the TLA while waiting for Liz? He recognized me I guess from my picture with Liz from 2 years ago. It sucked that she didn't sign, hopefully she'll be back in the spring.

hahh JeremyEngle is apolite, mild-mannered, and sexually alluring young lad who will catch you off guard in dark alleys in Philadelphia. I'm just kdding it was nice meeting you.
Also, to AndyWarhol, I saw you taking pictures at the show and give Liz the bracelet, would you mind sharing them? I'd love to see those pics, you were right in front!

well when they're printed feel free to look and gawk all you like,
sharing art work implies you are an artist and would like to share
something of interest to me. a mutual interest you might say.
to own means you make an offer to buy.
it never ceases to amaze me that people think i pulll these photos out of'
the air and that no costs are incurred.
i love the interest but i don't share pictures.
give a little more thought to requests for art work/photographs
in the future.

Well Liz was nice enough to give you a photo pass...no cost to you.
usually people that take photos at shows post up compressed (<100k) jpegs with their name watermarked on the image. Then if they wish, send the HQ's without watermark to people or up for sale on ebay.
-Derek-
PS. If you are the guy I remember at the show, didn't you have a 35mm camera? I can't see those pictures being absolutely fabulous to begin with.
AndyWarhol
Oct 25 2005, 02:08 PM
actually, if you knew anything about 35mm, you would know a person
who uses it can get excellent wonderful shots.
especially if they are experienced.
and liz did not give me photopass.
her employers did.
i appreciate the interest but i don't do charity anymore.
too many of my photos have ended up being used to sell shit
on ebay or used on bootlegs.
it's nothing personal so don't hassle me with your petty b-s.

To each his own. Liz doesn't like photographs, and yet, SHE allowed you take them for the first couple songs. And even though Liz herself didn't give you a photopass, she was the one allowing pictures for you (didn't you read the sign that she requested no pictures at the show?)
Anyways, I'm not going to justify your acts as being wrong, I myself have done something against Liz's policy as well, I went ahead and filmed the show. And even though I
am charging for it, having video and audio is certainly a different ballpark than image, not to mention, I at least posted a sample of my work, and I'm basically charging enough to cover the blank media, postage, and my time sending it.
Regardless of all of that, did you not hear what I had to say about watermarking? lol. You post up a low quality jpg with your name plastered on the picture, that way people can still see the picture but couldn't use it for anything because your name is watermarked on the image.
And while you may be proud of your 35mm it will never EVER stack up to digital. Let's face it, 35mm is grainy no matter what speed film you use or in the best of lighting. If I had taken a Canon Digital Rebel, even though I was in the balcony, I'm positive my pictures would've turned out way better than yours...I'm not saying your pictures didn't come out fabulous (because remember, we haven't seen them), but don't make them out to be "oh so excellent that I can't share them because they are
that good I can make money off of 'em!".

Wow, I didn't realize how shitty a show this was until I saw it played back on a DVD. Dino seriously needs to lay off the fuckin' harmonies.
Gawd. And this was definitely the worst video bootleg of all the video bootlegs I have of Liz. Thank god I didn't have to pay full price. I need episode 5 of Uplands
now -- something to alleviate this sickened feeling.
