i don't. the sales for somebody's miracle over at amazon have been amazing (as amazing as liz phair records go). it was in the top 30 and even in the teens up until the weekend. toiday it's at 43. i think this will be liz's biggest opening yet. and may well be her second time going gold.

you're right that is sad.
but I mean it's the inevitable...liz not selling records...her getting dropped from her label...her starting to smoke pot...her leaving l.a. and moving back to chicogo, without dino, and then selling paintings when she's 40-something and around 45 she releases a barely 10-track album under a local lo-fi recording label that was recorded in her small suburbian home...hmm..

what is it with you and pot? face it, liz will probably never do pot again. not as long as she has a kid in the house. for better or worse motherhood changed her. i think going back to pot would be the worst mistake. let's have liz re do exile over and over until she can't breath. her exile days are long gone. it's the past and it will always be the past.

LP and Whip-Smart debuted at #27. These numbers are far from final. Only 3.64% percent of the numbers are in so Liz can fall and rise either way. All of her sales are far from put in and so are everyone elses.

anyway. anyone else rooting for this one to tank? because what will happen if it doesn't. will liz continue taking the punches from the critics as long as she sells. hmm

I don't think Liz sounds country on Somebody's Miracle but some of the guitar riffs are definately copied from country riffs. On Table for One there is a really fine flamingo riff near the end of the song. Some really good picking on some of the others also. You can hear some Nashville if you really listen to the music.

Not so, on this weeks Top 20 Video Countdown at VH1, Liz's video for ETM was chosen as the "Flava Of The Week", meaning it is just outside the top 20 and rising. Hell, I see her video EVERY morning on VH1. Today it was on twice. Also, as it was mentioned earlier, SM is selling pretty good at Amazon. Today it is #35 up from #40 yesterday.

For it to be her second time going gold, it would still have to be 1998.
Whip-Smart was certified gold on March 13, 1998, and
Exile in Guyville followed in its footsteps less than two months later, on May 6, 1998.

is anyone shocked? for real? that this album might not sell all that great?
What i see here - is a white rabbit stuck in a chain link fence.
sure - we all have our opinions about it cuz we're fans.
but the mainstream?
What is one good reason why ANYONE out there in record-shoppin-land would buy this album?
Maybe they would download it. No reason to buy it, unless you're a fan and want to support her.
let me start by saying i LIKE Somebody's Miracle...but it is easily her most "forgettable" album. the songs aren't TOTAL shit - but ironically - this could hurt her more!
the fans she was picking up with the self-titled album - are going to be VERY disappointed in this record.
I know, I know... a few will like it - but a couple of young teen girls i used to work with who LOVED the s/t album - are saying "this one is kinda boring".
It doesn't pack the mainstream punch that most of us HATED (or LOVED) the first time around.
she would have been better off just bloody PICKING a side.
Either do another SUPER CATCHY, cheese-pop album filled with avril lavigne and kelly clarkson type songs - or do a nitty gritty old school "fuck you industry" album with long trippy instrumentals, weird guitars and husky vocals.
but she's TOTALLY stuck in the middle.
the image i get - a scared rabbit - caught in a chain link fence.
both sides are ganging up on here - asking her "what the fuck happened?"
Hell - the "WHY CAN'T I" fans even have the right to say "What the FUCK!? She's not writing songs as good as Why Can't I - like she used to!"
I feel seriously bad for her.
Unless some genius marketing comes up - or they pick a next single VERY carefully and sell it to the right teen movie.... this album is going to REALLY hurt liz's career.
she's either gonna go back to school to get that grad school diploma she made mention of - or she goes bye-bye from Capitol and will be left with nothing but fragments and shards of what was ONCE a really promising career.
personally - i hope she makes it either way now. it'd be great to get another KICK ASS album from her...but if that can't happen.... she at least deserves to get rich.
also - i don't think she is as badly in the poor house as we think she is. isn't there a blurb about her saying she is living in an "insanely nice" house that she just "can't afford".
Translation: "I'm living ABOVE my means - which means I'm really not that poor at all - if i just got a modest home like every other working artist out there, and stopped trying to act like some fucking Hollywood party-girl that i probably will NEVER be."
It's the whole fitting in thing, that i think has ALWAYS bothered liz.
she is NEVER going to fit in anywhere.
does she not see this as a GOOD thing? why in the world would you want to sound like ANYONE else??? unless yer a wannabe - and liz is too good to be a wannabe.
now i'm ranting. i'm waaaaay up North in Canada right now - so the altitude is getting to my head.
disregard everything i've said.
seriously.
