oh yey!!! sol seppy is freakin good. her song "come running" is just so.. ahh it makes me smile. it's just so catchy and optimistic, although the fuzz quality of the sonics makes me feel all wintry and sh-t. love her.
and in exile deo is brilliant. i love that you're into juliana now. WLY thinks its her best effort yet and i'm not sure about that but it's near close. i still think it's Beautiful Creature that's her masterpiece.
and Pod and Begin to Hope are good, especially Pod.

If you rush Tori records you won't get as much out of them I gurantee it, speaking from experience. I still understand LE and BFP best, which are the records I spent the most time on.
After SLG I rushed out and bought SW and I sort of disliked it for the longest time, which seems ridiculous now as I am prety endeared to every song on there now. Same goes for Beekeeper.

Bleh, I want to rush and get 'em all. Maybe I won't get as much out of them initially, but personally, I don't think I would be very good at just having one for a long time, because when I really like an artist, I stay interested by focusing on a different album by them every day (or every few hours ha). And I would always be busy wondering "what is that other album like?"
I'm not gonna lie, with albums I don't really understand what they are about usually unless I read about what the songs are about on the internet (which I do frequently). I prefer just to bask in the glory of the music because I enjoy it so much for how it sounds, and I like to have my own interpretations for songs, however incorrect they are. So far, I've loved and really gotten into every album by her almost immediately (Little Earthquakes, Pele, and choirgirl), except Under the Pink, which, strangely, was the first I got by her. I hope that someday I will come to love it as much as the rest (though there are many songs I love on it, there are many I feel I could listen to more). Whatever, I'm rambling on.
On topic, today I did buy "To Venus and Back" which I haven't listened to yet. I also bought Juvenilia, which I was excited to find, but then was sad when I pulled off the price tag (which should not have been placed on a paper cover) and ruined a tiny portion of the cover.

My wife and I went back over to Waterloo Records tonight.
Aimee Mann - I'm With Stupid. Recommendations from Blair and others on this forum. So far, I like this album. I haven't heard it all the way through, but I've made it through the first 3-4 cuts and the song "You're With Stupid Now". I like Aimee's voice and the musical style.
Retrospective - The Best of Suzanne Vega. I have Solitude Standing on Vinyl and caught some discussion on this board and picked it up. I haven't made it all the way through, but I can tell that I'll be playing this one. I really related to the song Luka when it came out.
Tanya Donelly - The Hungry Life. Blair recommended Beautysleep as the first to get, but Waterloo didn't have it. This one is interesting. At least one of the songs seemed to have country music like instruments in the background.
I looked for Lori Carson, but the place for her records was empty. I'll probably just order something from the internet.

I actually put together casettes over 20 years ago with nothing but women singers. I called one of them 10 women, for the 10 different women singers that were on the casette.
These are the women singers that I have liked:- Pat Benatar
- Patty Smyth
- Maddy Prior (of Steeleye Span)
- Meredith Brooks
- Natalie Merchant (both with 10,000 maniacs and solo)
- enya
- Sheryl Crow
- Sarah McLachlan
- Susanna Hoffs
- Amanda Marshall
- The Bangles
- Carly Simon
- I forget the lead singer in Concrete Blonde
- Dixie Chicks
- Heart (Ann and Nancy Wilson)
- Joni Mitchell
- Linda Ronstadt
- Lisa Loeb
- Lucinda Williams
- Michelle Branch
- Norah Jones
- P J Harvey (after recommendation from here)
- Patricia Vonne
- The Pretenders
- Stevie Nicks
- Christine McVie
- Terri Clark
- Vanessa Carlton (I know, what was I thinking?)
- Donna Lewis
There's probably more and I needed to check my iPod for some of the names.

yaaay.. ok. my first Aimee album that i really got into was "Lost in Space.." because it's amazing. it's kind of a little bit of Radiohead, a little bit of Tori, Elliott.. but completely unique
the first Aimee tracks I got into were "Humpty Dumpty," "High on Sunday 51," "Invisible Ink," and "It's Not." I'd start with those..
haven't heard much Lori Carson or Tanya Donnelly

We went by Best Buy today to get some inkjet refills for Vickie's printer. We got her a new car stereo that has an aux input jack up front. Perfect for XM radio and her iPod.
Anyways, I finally picked up Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow. I got the remastered version with the 6 bonus tracks, and even then there is a hidden bonus track at the very end of the album. It has 4 tracks that didn't make the cut and mono mixes of Somebody to Love and White Rabbit.
This album was released shortly before Liz's birthday (Feb. 1967) and stayed on the charts for 56 weeks once it entered the charts.
Jerry Garcia was listed as spiritual advisor on the album and is the person credited with coming up with the name of the CD.
I've now queued up Suzanne Vega's Retrospective CD and Aimee Mann's I'm with Stupid and will be listening to that for the next hour or so.
Cheers!

I'm glad you decided to buy This Hungry Life, tramp. Let me know what you think.
I like This Hungry Life. My first impression was that Tanya was English but was singing in a more American country style. I was wrong, she is from New England. The accent for New England can be strong and is probably closer to English accents than the rest of the US.
I've downloaded some songs from Whiskey Tango Ghosts and Beautysleep and will (very likely) purchase those records as well. It's interesting that on first listen, I was leaning more towards This Hungry Life and wasn't that impressed with Beautysleep, but with some listening I find that I like all of the music. She has, at times, a very soft voice and it can be soothing, but This Hungry Life shows some different dimensions. I'm going to be listening to this album again. What is interesting to me is some of the old music that I listened to in college that is coming back to me. I hung around with some people that were really into old English folk-rock. The quintessential album is Fairport Convention: Liege & Lief, which I have in vinyl format--album is over 30 years old. One of the key players of Liege and Lief is Ashley Hutchings, who left Fairport Convention to form Steeleye Span. There were a number of us that were really big into Steeleye Span. Ashley Hutchings just did one Steeleye Span record and then started the Morris On and Albion Country/Dance band groups. I didn't have any of the Morris On albums, but I was in the process of joining a group of Morris dancers in Houston (most of them from UK) when I got married, lost my eligibility for scholarship due to my marital status (wife made too much money as telephone operator), got a job and moved to Minneapolis for a year. I never did go back and get my professional masters degree, but have not really regreted the life that I ended up with. I do have The Prospect Before Us, which has a really cool cover. I'll do an album of the day posting about The Prospect Before Us.
For Steeleye Span, the key albums to have are Below the Salt, and Parcel of Rogues. I have almost all of their first ten albums on vinyl, but only have Below the Salt and All Around My Hat (from the old days) on CD, besides a greatest hits CD. I need to pick up Parcel of Rogues, because it is such a good album. Below the Salt included their version of John Barleycorn and is one of the best of the series.
Anyways, a lot of this has emerged from a place deeply buried in my memories. It's really hard to pin down what I'll like and what I don't like. I generally have a fairly broad appreciation for different musical styles.

I started looking for Judee Sill and haven't seen any discs of hers yet. I'll probably break down and trip down to Waterloo Records, which is THE place to buy records in the Austin area.
Trivia: Waterloo was the original name for the village that became Austin.
I really do love Lori Carson Stars. It's like Angel Wings flapping. That's how I kinda think of it sounding. She has a real soft and soothing voice. I like Caroline, too. Breathe--that one is really cool. I can imagine myself getting nice and really stoned and listening to that one over and over again. Won't happen, but I can still imagine it.
Anyways, we were picking up some stuff at Best Buy and I snagged Joni Mitchell - Dreamland.
The orchestral version of Both Sides Now is a real treat. Just about brought tears to my eyes, actually I think it did.
There's a fair amount of overlap of Dreamland and Hits. i went to Joni Mitchell website after Rob's post about Joni's plans for a new album and found out that they released Hits the same year that they released one called Misses. I guess that Misses were ones that didn't play well for the masses.
I'll probably go out and try to get the CD version of Hejira. It was a very different sounding Joni Mitchell, but I liked the album. I think that I got it on sale at $2.99 or $3.99 in 1977. That was in the old days, when you either bought vinyl or casettes, and casettes sucked then.
Also, based on acidmouse's excellent recommendatons for Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, I picked up Pink Floyd - London 1966/1967. This has a different version of Interstellar Overdrive that what a lot of people hear. I liked it.
I haven't completely made it through Nick's Boogie, which is the only other track on the album. This is only a 28 minute album.
