i'm on the fence with this band. they're normally the type of band that i would not even touch. as i loathe a lot of what they stand for/represent. but for some reason i like them. especially their more recent material. yet i'm not really into them all that much. i try to get further into them and i don't necessarily. which is i'm on the fence about them. although i really dig the new thurston moore cd. i've been playing that one for a while now. i think it's probably his finest work. in and out of sonic youth. it appeals much more to my sense of taste.
what does Sonic Youth stand for that is negative? They do not alienate people with an "inder than thou" approach. There is always a trace of pop in their material especially Goo, Dirty, and so forth. Personally I am a fan of their mid 80s work with Sister and EVOL topping my list.

Don't feed the troll

Makesmewantto, I enjoy Daydream Nation immensely as well as Dirty and Sonic Nurse; they've always had great pop instincts. Their hooks are usually a bit more complex or grafts of guitar work instead of vocals (Pattern Recognition) but it is there.

no. i think you're misconstruing what i've said. for me, they represent the whole no noise, arty, and art noise movement that was growing in the 80's. along with the riott girrl movement. for me anyway. i've associated them with that particular movement ever their self titled debut. and that type of scene/music isn't something i like. in fact a lot of it i loathe. a very sort of art school type of music and crowd. it's not my thing. and i really just don't like it. it tends to come off as pretentious. though sonic youth isn't. it's my own hang ups about that particular scene and me associating sonic youth with that. i never did get into that. i like sonic youth enough to own their last 3 cd's and the daydream nation deluxe edition remaster. but yet i am on the fence with this group. i've tried to get into them more and the best i can do is be a casual fan who somewhat likes them, but is more on the fence.
which i feel is a very sad thing because this is an important band in the history of music and if you like alternative music then you must like sonic youth or so it seems. they feel like one of those artists that you have to like and if you don't you are seen as weird for not liking them. like dylan or the beatles for example. of course it may be me. i just have a bit of a hard time getting really into them. i like them well enough on some songs, but i'm bowled over or impressed enough to be a bigger fan. i'm still not seeing the pop thing, but then that may be also be me and my definition of what makes up pop. i find liz phair to be pop. especially on her self titled. i also feel that artists like suzanne vega, the sundays, 10,000 maniacs, juliana hatfiield, mary lou lord, elliott smith, and others are pop. i guess to me pop is something that has a clear defined melody and hook with clear music and often without a lot of "noise". something that even the stupidest of music listeners can get into. the best of pop music has to transcend boundaries and age. i don't feel that sonic youth does that. and that's why i don't think they're pop. but that is due to my definition.
they've seemed to be all about the "noise" which, again tome, goes against what pop music is. wheres as thurston moore's new record is actually not about the noise. it has a very lush sound without all the usual trademark sonic youth touches. it relies a lot on strings which to me is a first for thurston moore record. i've been swamped with a lot of stuff. both musically and not musically. so i haven't been able to give daydream nation the time it really needs. i hope to do that as soon as possible. this may be the sonic youth record that turns me around.

I never purchased the live 'un. Allmusic said it's bad. Is it?
I really dislike C'mon C'mon, although it has a few great moments. It's just so annoying. And the music videos for the singles are just ghastly - sheryl looks worse than Liz does in the extraordinary video (bar the bits with liz wearing that sparkly cardigan and black skirt. she looks lovely there).

I don't think the live album is bad, there are a lot of cool guest appearances on there. It's also got a lot of her best songs and some neat covers as well.
There are songs on C'mon C'mon that I really hate. But the songs that I love make up for it. I agree, I loathed Sheryl's image change for that album. I felt embarrassed for (and a little bit embarrassed of) her.

If you go with 70s Fleetwood Mac, don't forget the albums that came before Lindsey and Stevie joined the group.
Mystery to Me is one of the albums that my older brothers had and I got that about a year or two ago. I like the group when Bob Welch was with the band.
Of course, your mileage may vary and you may be totally discounting everything that I say.

Fair enough.
For me, I like the cuts Hypnotised and For Your Love from Mystery to Me. I also like several of the songs that feature Christine McVie from this time. I really think that Christine McVie was highly underrated as both a singer and performer.
I've always wanted to find "The Legendary Christine Perfect" CD, which was her solo album. Perfect was her name before she married John McVie.
