This song is SO amazing. "Can't Get Out of What I'm Into" was kind of annoying and didn't fit in on the initial CD...I don't understand how "Closer To You" didn't make the initial cut. It's so beautiful, best song on the album (in my opinion).

I think "Closer to you" is the best song on SM.
It's the only one I love off the album.
But yeah, it really is a great song.

does it not make the U.K. album?
It is great, I can see it on the WCSE listing and knowing that she can still make songs like this makes me smile.
it just makes me dissapointed when she chooses not to.

I have a wide range. I don't turn to ashlee when I'm frustrated, alone, angry, emotional, or even feeling triumphed or in that "fuck you" feeling, like I do liz. Liz has many layers. Ashlee does not, because her music is mostly poppy and carefree, even when her songs are most uncarefree.

I like Ashlee Simpson, as well. I listen to pop music when i'm in that kind of mood, but I like it for what it is: complete manufactured, catchy rubbish. I know a good song when I hear one., hence "Closer To You".

I have my tivo set for that trainwreck. I don't think she is as bad as others do but she can't sing that well and now she is forced to sing live to prove herself.
I also can't wait for the skit when she tries to make fun of herself but no one laughs because she is not allowed to be in on the joke.

Hey, with all of the talk about SM and about LP selling out, I just wanted to say that "Closer to you" is an amazing song that deserves metion with "Explain it to me" and "Whatever makes you happy" as truly great songs. There are other good songs on the album (table for one, for instance), which is actually quite good even if an old-school LP fan is still going to play the first three cds more often.

Along with Everything Between Us and Table for One, I think Closer to You is up there with Liz' best ever songs. Lazy Dreamer is another great song but doesn't compare to anything currently in my top 10.

Closer To You is fantastic. It, Table For One, and Why I Lie might very well be the strongest three consecutive songs on any of her albums.

I agree with Solar on this one. I find myself skipping ahead to track nine and just listening to the end of the album OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER! LOL!
I think the sequencing is better with Closer to You in the #9 slot...but I still think there was a place for Can't Get Out on the album...say the #6 slot maybe...

Hey, I just wanted to point out that the review in Slate.com singled out "Closer to you" as a particularly treacly song. Apparently, he prefers Count on my love" a much better song. I consider it one of the weakest tracks she has ever recorded. At least the review was reasonably positive.

That is exactly what I do. I start at Closer and go to the end skipping Lost Tonight. Once Giving it all to you finishes I sometimes go onto Leap of Innocence and stop there.

I don't really like this one. It's pretty, stripped down, and has a nice melody, but the lyrics don't really go anywhere. That one line about seeing someone like tv, but with a smell and a choice is really weird. I can't decide if it's quirky/ good Liz, or bad (umbrella when it's raining) Liz. It does fit on the album better than "Can't Get Out", but that song is so much stronger lyrically.
Baby Blue
Oct 15 2005, 08:25 PM
That line is probably the biggest reason that I love this song, actually. It is so very Liz. This song is probably the closest to the old school Liz sound that any of the songs on this album get. I'm in love with it.

i think that Closer To You would've been better if they hadn't put it back to back with Table For One. They should've put Closer To You as the last song and Giving It All To You as #9.

Had a bizarre Liz dream last night. She was playing at a restaurant type set up for me and some family members. My sisters got up during Closer to You and left. That left just me and her and her new hubby, some over weight older foreign guy. She didn’t seem to mind and had a dessert. Psycho.

It's strange that another thread about this song was opened recently. Especially since it is so close to the top, due to the last purge.
