Full Version: Went on a buying spree

I completed my collection today. I bought Liz Phair in late 2003. I soon after bought EIG because all of the nasty reviews. I was blown away by the self titled album and I had to see what all the hubub was about. I like them both but I liked Liz Phair better. I left work today stopped by Hastings to pick up SM and they had Supernova and WCSE in stock to I bought the others too. I have plenty to listen to for the next day or so. I put SM on and now I have EIG on and I am going to listen to them in order. I am sure it wont change my opinion on her at all. I like her and will buy anything she puts out. I liked SM. In fact I like everything I have ever heard her sing. Now I have to get my hands on the Girly Soud Tapes to be a complete fan. I have never owned all the albums by any other artist ever. I have a wide variety of music but was never compelled to own every album like I am with Liz.

Not sure if you mean Whip Smart or the Supernove EP, but Whip Smart is a must. And WCSE is such a joy. Have fun.

I know! I love this album a lot too.
I don't get why people always refer this album as a disaster.
not trying to be sarcastic here, just want to know the reasons.

From everything I have read, she gets beat up on everything but Guyville. I cant believe how harsh critics are with her. She could sell her songs to any of the pop queens out there and she would be in SHIT LOADS OF MONEY off of the royalties, but I would rather hear someone putting there soul into singing a song.

I would love to hear her singing some dirty ass blues. You can bend your voice out of key all you want and it is totally accepted and expected of a good blues singer. I havnt made it through all over her albums. Does she or has she sang any true blues?

phairphreak
I didn't know that they did.

well, i have been reading those comments from the forum many times.
basically, people are saying that Liz made a wrong decision trying to please the main stream market, and the album just turned out terriable.

Those comments are mostly from the time when her self-title album just released 2003. people use whip-smart as an example to demonstrate that going main stream is a bad idea for Liz.
fucked up blair23
she comes damn near to blues in girlysound.

Is girly sound published somewhere that you can actually buy it. I know you can download stuff here and there, but I would like it to be released if it has not been, and why has it not been if it hasnt?

No, Girly Sound hasn't been 'published' or released officially. Everyone will be able to download it again at LPX soon after we get some things straightened out. When you hear it, it might not sound like what you think it should. It came from cassette, so there's tape hiss, bad level adjustment, etc. (there's also a 'girly sound cleanup' project happening, which will be available on LPX as well, but there's no set date when that will happen, although it's going rather well... the one song that's finished anyway.)

I would stay away from eBay if you're going to try and get a copy - people will rip you off on there, and just know that you'd be purchasing a cd-r... and it's not at all worth it to pay 20+ dollars for something you can download if you wait a little while, even if the seller does include insanely bad cover art.

Whip-smart is my favourite.
redlight
I've never truly embraced Whip Smart. I honestly think SM is a better album. But it has Support System and nashville. And I fucking ADORE those songs.
LightYears
SM isn't as good as Whip-smart. There's a lot more love and care put into WS.
redlight
I just see WS as an attempt to refuse (a word? dry.gif ) the acclaim she got for Guyville. I've never really seen WS past that.

Woah, you need to read all the interviews and etc, she put a lot more love into that record. I think she put more into it than Exile. But that's just me.

Wasn't she completely blitzed and stoned out when she wrote WS? As much as I love WS, I understand why it is the album it is and without Liz, Brad and Casey being totally stoned while recording it, I don't think it ever would be what it is without that. You can't expect a sober Liz to write that way anymore.
phairphreak

I don’t think it has as much to do as being “sober” (and I can’t honestly believe that she was really stoned to the bone 24/7 all the time, but it does make a good story) as it does with the fact that she is pushing 40 and in a healthy relationship.
