Just bought and am currently listening to The Raconteurs', Jack White and Brendon Benson, new album "Consolers Of The Lonely". It's all over the place --- rock, ballads, country, folk. Great arrangements, musicianship, and lyrics. Excellent stuff!! Highly recommend this one.

The music here is exactly what you'd expect from looking at the cover. Girl rock with an edge, taking a page out of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and other female fronted rock bands. The singer's voice reminds me of Bif Naked and I'm not really crazy about Bif's vocals. This girl incorporates a lot of the punky bipolar schtick that is increasingly becoming annoying and anyway, I can listen to Juliette Lewis anytime I want a taste of lunacy. The songs too are kind of contrived though decent enough. They just feel kind of polished and a bit unoriginal. Like what else do they have to offer other than the kind of pop punk that everyone else are shelling out? That said, this is really not that bad. It can rock you out if you're relatively interested in the bands I've mentioned. Juliette and the Licks, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bif Naked... What else? There are so many soundalikes who actually do it better.

LOL! It was on the radio. I am at work and my radio only gets a few stations here. They have firewalled all my online stations. I recently got a new computer and all my music was deleted, so its been rough.
And it was Madonna and JT, not Brit Brit. And I LOVE the latest Britney cd, truly.

it's the best cd of the year so far. it's also one of the best cd's put out in the last 16 years. definitely in the top 5. their best since automatic for the people. once again, they proven themselves to be america's second best rock n roll band has blown every one out of the water.

It's average. Poor Stipe should have retired after Monster. I feel sorry for the embarrasment they've made of themselves. And this album is okay but it's not worth all that much praise. At best, they returned to using guitars. Big woop!

Apr 6 2008, 06:28 AM
um, ok. monster sucked big time. new adventures in hi-fi was much better. up and reaveal was actually quite good. around the sun sucked. now accelerate didn't just return to using guitars. r.e.m. have made a record that speaks volumes which is something that a lot of releases this year and for probably the last 10 years cannot claim to achieve. who else could write a song that starts off with th line if the storm doesn't kill me the government will only to have the song end up saying that america is still beautiful despite how shitty and crappy it is right now? not very many! hands down, accelerate is the best work this year.
and in the top 5 of the 00's. top of the last 17 years actually. this band and this album blows everyone else out of the water. r.e.m. come dangerously close to besting edie brickell and new bohemians. they surely have proved that with accelerate they can once again make excellent music. they are indeed america's second best rock n roll band and america's second best artist. very few can touch them. accelerate is far from average. sadly (and i hate to say this), accelerate shows how bad liz phair has become and even beats her best work whitechocolatespaceegg. in the past i would've put liz ahead of r.e.m., but acclerate has changed all that. all bets are off now. i would love to say that i made a record like accelerate. some artists grow old very gracefully and manage to stay on top. others fall flat on their ass.

"r.e.m. come dangerously close to besting edie brickell and new bohemians" - that's the number one band!!!

You write comedy don't you WLY?
Personally Stipe himself said in an interview that he wasn't going to deal with politics, he's a songwriter. So yeah, whatever dude, he's the only voice in music/film or television that deals with politics. Congratulations on winning the most narrow-minded interpretation of a culture since 9/11 became the war on Islam. p.s. they did it all better on Document. Check you local listings for details.

sorry but you're wrong!!! there are so many musicians that write about politics. here's a rundown:
natalie merchant (she's more political than michael stipe)
10,000 maniacs (far more political than michael stipe or r.e.m.)
bruce springsteen
prince
the b-52's
ani difranco (she's worse than natalie merchant and michael stipe combined)
tori amos
paul simon
the beastie boys
aganist me
green day
a lot of punks such as anti-flag and bad brains
nofx
billy bragg
juliana hatfield
radiohead
suzanne vega
bob dylan
steve earl
bjork
tom petty
rufus wainwright (he's more political and definitely more in your face than r.e.m.)
the smiths
joni mitchell
joan beaz
rickie lee jones
tracy chapman
rage against the machine
rollins band
black flag
minor threat
fugazi
eminem
liz phair
the clash
political songs have been a fabric of music since the 1960's. a very big fabric as a matter of fact. and michael stipe has made some of his best political songs on accelerate. probably his best since document. it's on an equal par with that album. take houston for example. he took a quote from barbara bush about the katrina victims after visiting them at the superdome and he turned into a fantastic song. no one else currently could do that. the song speaks volumes on an album that speaks volumes. something no other release this year will have.

WLY your definition of politics appears to be so broad it could include anything.
big haha's for these:
prince - are we talking sexual politics or about the politics of it being 1999?
the b-52's - Rock Lobster was about the student/workers' riots in '68! Cool!
paul simon - yeah he's political because he ripped off African music?
Tom Petty - haha
Bruce Spingstein - yeah those cars and girls are a pretty polarising issue
eminem! - hillarious
Do you write for a sitcom?
Some of the others I won't comment on because I really don't think they're political but they aren't so absolutely completely and utterly as funny as you putting those on the list.
You'd almost think you didn't know that Jello Biafra but an album out with the Melvins a few years back from your list, shameful missing that really.
Yeah the '60 is the time of political music through various forms, but in the 70s that kind of tapered off and in the 80s jesus they were mostly fucking around with synths. I'm surprised you don't add the Cure or Dire Straits to that list.
I admit I'll have to listen more closely to the REM album, but I'm just sick of the personal nature of Stipe's subject matter of the last 3-4 albums. So sick of it that those albums will forever be tainted as bordering on absolute crap. And I have more REM bootlegs than you can dream of, so believe me I don't make these comments lightly.
The Smiths, is that because they had a go at the Queen and talked about Meat being Murder? Unless Girlfriend in a Coma has some hidden underlying meaning of course.
