In order of passion
1. Oasis - (good to see someone else on the board is a fan, Cal)- have about 4 or 5 gig of their stuff (bootlegs/b-sides) on my computer
2. Liz Phair - Oasis and Liz are my two passions. it is a far drop off from there
3. The Kleptones - a bunch of British DJ's who are masters at mashup. Have done Yoshimi and the hip hop robots (mixing flaming lips) and recently A night at the Hip- Hopera (remixing the music of Queen) A night at the hip hopera is a masterpiece
4. Elton John- love all his stuf up until about 1990 or so.
5 Hall and Oates - don't blame me. my sister played these guys all the time during my formative years and i still have a soft spot for them.
6. Nirvana - the music of my college years.
7. Guns and Roses - Appetite for destruction came out when i was 16 and it was music to my teen rebellion ears.
8. The Verve/Richard Ashcroft - Shame these guys broke up.
9. The Beatles - but then again doesn't everyone love the beatles.
10. Blondie - Debbie Harry just does it for me. always has and still does. (just warning Crash: no smart cracks

)

Liz Phair - something that gets me always about liz is her voice which is very laconic, very sarcastic as if her sorrow and glory are all mixed in with her observant winks. she's a smart pop songwriter and when she wants to get all emo, she doesn't fuck around with metaphors like tori amos and gets right down to the emotion, however murky it is.
Aimee Mann - literate portraits of doomed relationships are her forte. her lyrical gifts are always with her. consistent.
PJ Harvey - she's a ruthless heart attack waiting to happen. although she's mellowed, rid of me and dry are documents of love's ability to fluctuate ever so unpredictably
Juliana Hatfield - some may say, she's just this waif with guitars writing flimsy guitar ditties. but the grunge surrounding her bitter words prove them wrong.
Tanya Donelly (Belly) - her voice is extraordinary. it's gone past girlish and zoomed past child like up to pixie ish. she almost sounds like she's coming down from heaven.
Throwing Muses (Kristin Hersh) - kristin hersh is a force of nature. on paper, she may not make sense but add her skillful guitar performances and the sound of her troubled voice, her words take on a deeper meaning.
Shannon Wright - eerie piano pieces, powerful gutteral drums, twisted guitars and her voice that shoots in and out of pain and peace. find her.
Mary Timony - her voice reminds me of liz but her music is in a totally different universe. her band, helium, was an indie heroic act spliced between songs of sexual frustration and magical imagery. her music now is all about fairies and such and she's still enjoyable.
Veruca Salt (Nina and Louise) - the best harmonies in rock. i wish they were still doing music together but in a world where gwen stefani is a valid artist, it's not a surprise they didn't make it. nina's melodic prowess and louise's kittenish rage were such a good combination. shame!
Red House Painters - if you want to slash your wrists and if you want a male voice that can put you in a daze. fuck josh groban. this is a singer with a substance. download their song, "drop".
The Pixies (The Breeders) - the pixies is nirvana. they are what alt rock is today. every pause and power song that you hear. they're the pixies. and kim deal is a national treasure.

Hi all,
first post (just checked out Liz's great website), having discovered her fantastic songs "Extraordinary" and "Why Can't I?" on GotRadio's Women's Alternative channel....sorry, I digress.
10 of my favourite artists, in some vague order of preference:
* Sheryl Crow
* Michelle Branch
* Sixpence None The Richer
* The Cranberries
* Belinda Carlisle
* Aimee Mann
* The Corrs
* Dido
* No Doubt
* Frou FrouOf course, Liz Phair goes without mention! (I've listened to "Liz Phair" almost non-stop for the last month, it's so infectious! - not sure I like her older albums as much, but "Polyester Bride" does stand out). There are plenty more artists and songs I adore (Suzanne Vega, Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne...), but these gals (I've noticed that I much prefer listening to female vocalists recently) I could listen to all day (and do!)
For a full list of all my favourite artists and songs, check out the
music page on my website. I put that page together in the hope that people would stumble upon some new talent related to one of their favourites - in the same way that I've found new artists by searching for similar artists to my faves. AllMusic.com is great for that, and GotRadio Women's Alternative channel would suit most people here too. Obviously, we all share similar tastes, and there is some great overlap (Belinda, Lillix, Frou Frou, No Doubt...) - so feel free to open up some discussion and recommendations!

Yes! In my opinion, their best songs are New Slang, Caring is Creepy, The Past and the Pending, and Pink Bullets. They came out with a new album I think about a year ago called Chutes Too Narrow. Their first one is called Oh Inverted World, and it's very very good, and i reccomend it to everyone. Their first album is a lot better than their new one, i think. They also have a couple songs on the Garden State Soundtrack, which is also one of my favorite movies. (go see it!)
Anyways, their an awesome band that everyone should listen to.

The Cure I've been a fan since 4th grade. Once you dig under all their pop bullshit (Friday I'm in Love, the Lovecats, etc.) you'll find a band that really survives the test of time, and the ever changing music scene.
Depeche Mode Seeing Dave Gahan live up on stage really puts you in a trance. If you're looking for music to lay back in the dark and relax to, you can't beat DM.
The Smiths It's common knowledge that Robert Smith of the Cure and Morrissey hate each other. But you can't help but listen to "Girlfriend In a Coma" or "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and not smile. Not to mention, I can't get enough of "There's a Light that Will Never Go Out".
Liz Phair Need I elaborate?
The Rapture I didn't know what to think of this band the first time I saw them. Think Depeche Mode meets Paul Oakenfold meets No Doubt. Seriously. They have a guy that plays cowbell. Do yourself a huge favor and buy their CD.
The Pixies/Frank Black I like both equally. 'Doolittle' is still in constant rotation, as is 'Teenager of the Year.' I could listen to 'Headache' over and over and not get sick of it.
James Say Something, Say Something, Anything....
New Order/Joy Division New Order formed out of Joy Division. If songs like "Love will Tear Us Apart" or "Bizarre Love Triangle" don't make you want to dance, nothing will.
Smashing Pumpkins Old Smashing Pumpkins. A friend told me I should use the song "Today" as our wedding song. That's pretty funny since that song is about suicide.
Radiohead Instead we used "True Love Waits" as our wedding song. A much better choice. Thom Yorke makes me laugh. I mean the guy sings about his fear of cars.
*Honorable Mentions:
Rachael Yamagata
Placebo
Gomez
PJ Harvey

The Smiths - Probably my favourite band ever. Morrissey is probably the wittiest person on the face of this earth, Johnny Marr is consistently overlooked as the guitar legend we all know he is, Rourke/Joyce are probably one of the most underrated rhythm sections of all time.
The Cure - As RDB says, they stand the test of time and still sound great today.
Liz Phair - I don't think I need explain this...we are on a Liz forum after all.
Thea Gilmore - An absolutely amazing wordsmith...never wastes a single lyric and is sarcastic and witty as hell. Fantastic level of productivity too; 6 studio albums since her 1999 debut "Burning Dorothy".
Queen - As mainstream rock goes, it does not get much better than this. I mean....Bohemian Rhapsody....amazing
Butterfly Boucher - Probably my find of 2004. A superb, amazingly consistent debut album in Flutterby. She plays all the instruments on this album herself, apart from i think the drums on one track and the bass on another. An amazing skill level.
Aimee Mann - An amazing songwriter. I have all of her solo stuff and Batchelor #2 or, The Last Remains of The Dodo and Lost in Space have some absolute legends on them - The Fall of The World's Own Optimist, Save Me, Backfire, Red Vines, Pavlov's Bell, Humpty Dumpty, Real Bad News.
The Dears An amazing Canadian band... Their album No Cities Left is superb. The musical soundscapes they construct on this album are mindblowing. My favourite track probably "22: The Death Of All The Romance".

I'm gonna have to call you for that eden. Debut is not better than her later works. It is good, but not that good. Homogenic and Vespertine are Bjork's best albums hands down. Both are more focused and more inspirational. Homogenic is frigid and laced with anger which is expressed perfectly through the industrial streaks of the album, where as vespertine proves more intimate emotions like love and sex are just as moving. Both are frighteningly personal and amazing. Debut is slightly trivial and it lacks the focus of even "Post". Debut is nice club friendly pop, which Bjork managed to refine into experimental electronica through Post and Homogenic, but there is no way it is on the same musical platform of grandeur of her later music.
