huh?!?!?!
and why

there's the film the descent, which i loooove and got obsessed with a while ago. bunch of adventurous women go do some caving and secrets are revealed, monsters are unleashed. great movie, perfect acting, sad sad sad ending, the original one, i mean.

also carrie
which is just delicious in its carnage.

scream, because drew is such a good victim and i grew up watching this over and over again.

the exorcist, of course, so shocking!!

The Shining -- those two precious little girls.

Videodrome -- Cronenberg + Debbie Harry = sadistic psychodrama

Scanners -- Cronenberg again, psychic warfare

wooden and alone
i have not seen any of those
i tried to watch the shining once but i fell asleep as i saw it late at night

I really don't go in for horror movies that much. I don't like the gore fest.

However, Alfred Hitchcock had a way of making scary movies that leaned a lot more towards the mind fuck.

Psycho scarred a bunch of us growing up. I would also say The Birds, which is a very unsettling movie. The fact that it just ends abruptly without a real conclusion makes it really disturbing.

I do think that anyone into horror should see The Shining. If you want to be really there, watch it at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park.

I forgot one:

Angel Heart. Mickey Rourke, mulattoes, & voodoo.

I also thought The Ring was pretty good.

VIDEODROME is one of my f*cking fav movies EVER!!! I think I am wearing my Videodrome T-shirt in my Vegas pics. Debbie is just beyond rad & actually so is James Woods (he loving working with Debbie-this was before all his Sean Young traumas). I actually saw that movie when it first came out & people did not understand the concept-it was the beginning of the vidoe tape & video porn era. What is so cool now is that we basically DO have virtual porn, much like Nikki (Debbie's character) for real...Amazing film. Get the Criterion version with awesome commentary from Debbie.
I Love THE SHINING. You know they shot the exteriors at Timberline about an hour away from me-that is around where my folks live now. Jack & Shelley are just so amazing.
I have shown my love for CARRIE many times on this forum. I can really relate to that movie for a lot of reasons. I always felt like part Carrie/part Sue. I am a real misfit, but also a really outgoing, protective misfit. I get very protective of my friends & don't like to see them hurt.
I have never watched SCREAM or a lot of more current horror films-they don't seem to interest me.
I also still love a lot of classic Universal horror-Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, etc.

n ah, scream is pretty tame compared to the recent slice and dice flicks. the new halloween and texas chainsaw films are just insanely gorey. i love this but they should make you feel for the characters.
i cared for the characters in scream and scream 2, actually. parker posey was also in scream 3. heh. but that film was a mess.
i also liked sarah michelle gellar's chase scene in i know what you did last summer.
i think some gems can be found in the reality based horror genre, as quentin said it. Wolf creek is one of them, truly jarring movie experience. harrowing, because my fave character dies. lol
katefan4
I don't like gore for the sake of gore-I never have.
Like music, I like films that touch me-I hate most recent hollywood films coz they are just nothing that relates to me or my life.
I love horror, but I like the "horror"of the films I mentioned because I can thoroughly relate to them.
I also love most Hitchcock.

Well, you can hold my hand-That and hugging are actually my fav things to do, though all you think I seem to do is blow truck drivers.
There is very little I'm truly afraid of-I've been through too many health issues with my partner-that is truly scarier than any horror movie.
I also love the original B & W NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
wooden and alone
lol
only when forced to do it.
i guess i watch horror movies to keep from facing true horror, like how all your brothers and sisters are gonna die, maybe, probably even before you. lol
downer

Only when forced to do what?
I have no siblings-just parents, a partner & friends.
I thought my partner was going to die about 4 years ago & it was terrible time, Fub. He isn't doing well now, either, but I am coping better.

what?! whyyy??
awww
i feel for you
those kind of times, i feel lucky to have faith in God, even if i'm not exactly the model catholic.

That's funny you say that, coz lately my friend Janel & I have been praying and I used to be the most hardcore atheist, but now I just don't know...I'm going through alot of changes right now-I think you do when you reach your mid 30's, Fub.
He had pneumonia and he has a stomache conditon that makes it hard for him to keep food down, Fub. We spend a lot of our time eating slowly so he can try and keep food down. Wine also seems to relax the condition. He also just got new upper false teeth thathe is not reacting well to. Yes, my partner is much older than me, Fub-he will be 60 this year.
wooden and alone
oh my
you were the twink that grew up, didn't you
haha
be strong for your partner
i think at the end, love saves everyone. that's too maudlin and saccharine for a horror thread but whatever. it's true.

If I didn't love him, Fub I wouldn't have been through all the drama we have been through together.
I did used to look very twinky at one time-I like my looks much better now.
BUT I WAS NEVER A SNIPPY CIRCUIT QUEEN! Don't even joke about that one with me!!! smile.gif
Even younger, I was still a gay "coolchick" (to borrow from Marci...)

most hollywood movies never related to one's life. not even the ones from the golden age of hollywood. they were never really meant to. they're a form of escape. a way to get away from your own life and your own troubles and have fun for a couple of hours. i don't mind the occasional film that relates to me in some way, but by and large and i don't really like them because they tend to be very sad affairs and only drag me down. when all i wanted to do was escape. there's enough pain and suffering in the world. i don't need hollywood to reflect it as well.
wooden and alone
nah, a good movie entertains, a great one is a different matter. a great film can make you feel sad, feel happy, feel inspired. you should watch more films like that, wly. stop limiting yourself to vin diesel masterpieces. lol i kid. not really though. vin is hot but there's more to cinema. although i don't exactly agree with kf's view of current hollywood fare as totally devoid of substance, sometimes style is substance. anyway, i don't know what the fuck i'm talking about here. ZIP.
coolchick275
Horror's never really been my genre. I haven't seen too many horror movies, I'm more into the scary/suspenseful type of 'horror' movies, like The Sixth Sense or Stir of Echoes, stuff like that.

I don't care for movies that are gory for the sake of being gory, so none of the new movies really interest me. I'm way more interested in older movies (like Alfred Hitchcock, I've watched a few of his movies and I really liked them). I've also always wanted to see Carrie and the Shining.

You would love Carrie & Ths Shining, Marci-they are really modern classics with brilliant performances.
Some Hitchcock I love:
Rebecca
Notorious
Suspicion
Stage Fright
Spellbound
Marnie
The Birds

Why do they intimidate you? I collected a lot of old movie stuff in the 90's. I clean through my collection every so often when I need extra bread.

I'd like to see the redone movies by Stanley Kubrik, including The Shining. I believe the films have been cleaned up (and the aspect ratio is closer to what it was in the theatres when it came out).

baudrillard
HAHAHAHA! Gotta love that Aniston, can I dare add a Pur...... oh never mind...

The Tempest - IT'S BY ROMAN POLANSKI PEOPLE! or Repulsion. STOP LOOKING AT ME WITH BLANK EYES WLY! IT'S BY ROMAN POLANSKI!!!!!!!!!!!!
we left yesterday
the director who cannot step foot on american soil for fear of being arrested on charges stemming from a case years involving a minor and then running from the law. the same director who did rosemary's baby and chinatown. roman polanski. yes, i know who he is. really, tramp. it's getting old.
jivafox
the original texas chain saw massacre is, in my eyes, the definitive horror classic.

the documentary feel, the stifling horrible atmosphere, the realism and the nastiness and the cloying dread that seeps in from the first frame....wow, it's a brilliant piece of film making and, unfortunatley, a total fluke on tobe hooper's behalf it seems!
baudrillard
Thank god, it's actually hear of the director. But have you heard of the films? That's the actual issue here WLY.
wooden and alone
cats and dogs, the two of ye.

i liked tobe hooper's poltergeist. very effective ghost story.
jivafox
Poltergeist was only good because of Steven Spielberg's involvement tongue.gif

Had Tobe Hooper been left to do it alone..... unsure.gif

chilling
phairphreak
LOL! You are so easy Marlon. laugh.gif

well we do see jennifer naked in the break up. if that doesn't qualify for horror than i don't know what does.
phairphreak

Dude are you gay?
laugh.gif
we left yesterday
why? because i find jennifer mannistan's naked body a horror onto itself? nope, i just don't like ugly chicks.
baudrillard
HAHAHA! WLY is full of twist and turns. What a confused individual.
