Hey. I got my promo copy of the new album from the radio station i work at. it IS heavily watermarked and i WILL feel weird giving copies out - cuz my job would be at stake.
i am not gonna rub it in everyone's faces that i have it and dissect the songs to death while everyone else has to sit and stare.
the only review i care to give is - it's about as "totally awesome" as her last album.
it makes Whitechocolatespaceegg sound like Exile in Guyville.
"you're just trying to play me."
fuck off.
i've already shelved it and am currently listening to the new Juliana Hatfield (which is brilliant) and i finally got a copy of Matthew Sweet's Kimi Ga Suki*Raifu, which did NOT disappoint me.
but this is it for me kids.
either liz has outgrown me or i've out grown her or something - but i've pretty much had it with this stuff.
if you want to hear the album - listen to the promo squad songs again. it's all the same shit - except spread out over 14 or 16 songs..whatever.
it's "boring".
in fact - after i go see Liz at the Phoenix in Toronto this October...i think it's about time I throw the towel in with liz and just face up to it - that she is making music i just don't get any more.
more power to her.
and more power to me for finally stepping out of my denial.

disappointed, but not a bit surprised,
dan

Well, as long as you don't stick around this board an constantly bash Liz (like what happened with a certain fan at another board I visit), you can do whatever you want.

Actually, Dan, Table For One and Why I Lie are very much closer to real Liz material than the last album. Jackass.

hey Dan since you've already shelved it and are done with Liz, why not pass it on to me? I liked the Promo squad songs so I will probably put it to good use more than you. Don't think I'm not being serious. I would even pay you a few bucks for postage. Please, please please!!!!

This is shocking to me...but...I'll see you around.

funny how not long ago you were pleading for the cd to be leaked or someone to send you a copy, yet you work at a radio station?? Couldn't you figure out that a promo copy would make its way through?

anyways, yea, whatever dude.

disagree with the guy but the name calling isn't really needed.

Hahahahahaha!!! all in good time. you know - i totally would - but i'm kinda worried about my job because they were a little hesitant to release it knowing i was rabid for it.

as far as my hating it... you know what i think it all was... it was like..hyped up too much for me.
i've been reading some of the reviews people have been posting and trying to listen to the songs with a different ear and not all are bad. i think i was most angry because i kind of liked the first two songs...and then the rest..sort of just disappointed me.
it's not a "bad" album by any means. like i said - if someone does like it - more power to them. it'd be GREAT if people DID love it. it's all music, right? everyone has their own taste.
(which as a sidenote - being called a "jackass" for merely expressing I was a little disappointed was kind of annoying - but whatever. "Jackass" is far better than "judgemental".)

But yeah...SixDickPimp wrote a really great review. i agree with lots of the stuff in there - almost all of it. maybe at the time - i was just annoyed wth all the negative things that Six Dick Pimp pointed out - they were magnified - because i was seriously trying to convince myself that (after hearing the live version of Table for One) - this album would make me fall head over heels in love with her again.
then i heard the album version and was horrified to see they added a very unnecessary amount of production - and i couldn't help but think:
"JESUS!! She's actually WRITING good songs again - and some stupid production team is RUINING them!"

and - this isn't an attack on anyone who likes the album.
so no name calling. that's just kinda "jack-ass"-ish.
everyone's got their own opinion and the message board is kinda-sorta the only place to put it.

although - i was kinda serious about the "parting ways w/ liz" thing. i mean, of course i'll NEVER totally turn my back on her. she's been my fave for too long. but - i think she is going to become what R.E.M. became for me. or what Tori Amos became for me.
they used to be my favorites - and now...although i still have respect for them and what they did (and to some degreee - what they are doing) the stuff they have been releasing just doesn't do it for me anymore.
so be it. doesn't make it bad! just means it's a different direction.

shit - i've been listening to Kim Deal and Jim White lately.
maybe that's the problem. everything kinda pales in comparrison for me, juxtaposed to that stuff.

laters,
dan

Yeah, there are lots of records out there that you could be listening to that would make New Liz Phair sound like shit. Hell, just listening to the oldies station for an hour reminds me why I don't really bother paying attention to any 'new' music out there. Been there, done that.

Joshua Clover wrote in the Village Voice after her last album came out: "I'll always leave the light on for Liz; listen, Neil Young's made about 20 bad records, and we still love him." I think that's the attitude I have now. In fact, it makes me wonder why that 'leaving the light on' concept is so hard to grasp for some people, like my friends who can't understand why I'd bother to go see her live, or some folks on here who can't understand why I'd want to hang around. I'm gonna call it the Neil Young clause. Who else is with me?

yeah...i'm with you. totally there. leonard cohen, neil young - hell, I even have a nice comfy spot for Sinead O'Connor waiting patiently for a non-concept album of original songs that aren't over-produced.
and liz.

Ok, to be honest, I HATE the promosquad songs, but I actually really like "Wind in the Mountain". It's, I don't know. It just feels real.
