Rilo Kiley - Under The Blacklight (WBR – August 21st, 2007)

Rilo Kiley have built an illustrious career on creating masterful, deeply engrossing albums, the songs balancing an intimate confessional side with a kind of cavalier joie de vive and an increasingly affectionate nod to their Southern Californian musical heritage. The band's last record, 2004's More Adventurous, prompted Elvis Costello to praise the "best lyric writing that I've heard in many a day", Coldplay to invite them on their 2005 arena tour and a plethora of critics to vote them into their annual "best of" lists. Lead singer and songwriter Jenny Lewis' dexterity for lush power pop, soulful synths and weepy country ballads has won the band a large and dedicated fan base, bolstered by the blistering live shows which match Lewis' astonishing charisma with singer/guitarist Blake Sennett's shimmering guitar and the exemplary drum and bass partnership of Jason Boesel and Pierre de Reeder.

Under The Blacklight, their fourth album and their first for Warner Bros, was recorded in Los Angeles in fall/winter 2006 and winter 2007, and is Rilo Kiley at their most robust and dazzling. It comes after an 18 month hiatus during with Sennett released a second album with The Elected, Boesel recorded with Bright Eyes and Lewis released her debut solo album. Lewis, having spent all of 2006 promoting the southern soul-influenced Rabbit Fur Coat, returns to her rock roots with obvious relish; the delicate acoustic harmonies of her solo sojourn have given way to deliciously full-bodied vocals and exuberant songs complemented by rich guitar sounds and opulent production.

On Under The Blacklight, Lewis is fiery and unrestrained, no more so than on "The Moneymaker". With the blood of Fleetwood Mac, early Heart and The Rolling Stones' 1978 dancefloor masterpiece "Miss You" pumping through its veins, Under The Blacklight is a gloriously decadent-sounding album, smooth dance beats balanced by the underlying lyrical motifs of the seedier side of Los Angeles life; the characters in the songs embroiled in everything from drunken one night stands to the sex industry. The album's lyrical theme is of the darker side of life as revealed by a nightclub blacklight, each song's character sharpened to a precise focus by Lewis' unique, undeniable approach. Lewis' penchant for 60's country music is also represented; "15", a twisted love story of misplaced ardor, gives us the unique idea of what Bobbie Gentry might have had to say if internet dating had existed in her time. Elsewhere, Sennett dazzles with the sneaking 70's soul of "Dreamworld", a song so rich with gold dust that it's liable to take you back to the days of high school mix tapes, while "Breakin' Up" is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of what Rilo Kiley is: the song craft of Sennett and the serrated edge of Lewis' lyrics - deceptively catchy and upbeat, the song celebrates leaving a jilted lover in the dust. From opening track "Silver Lining" to closer "Give A Little Love" Lewis' stunning vocals gives credence to the recent Laura Nyro comparisons bestowed on her by the press. In many ways Under The Blacklight is a classic Californian love child and Rilo Kiley its ardent and vivacious young parents.

Under The Blacklight's producers are Rilo Kiley & Jason Lader (Vietnam, Jay-Z) and Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Fiona Apple). It's released in August 21st, 2007 on Warner Bros Records.

It doesn't come out until like July 17, though, right? So they're not going to ship it to you until July 17. (Unless, of course, you ordered it from Amazon UK or something.)

no, i bought it on amazon.com. it came out on june 12th.

I don't mean to be belligerent, but...are you sure? There are 3 versions listed on Amazon and this one doesn't come out until July 23, this one doesn't come out until July 17 and this one usually ships in 4-6 weeks.

that last one you linked came out on june 12th. it was supposed to ship and get to me by june 19th or june 20th. but now it won't be able to ship until july or august. they wanted me to confirm that this was ok. i haven't. this is why i hate online shopping. if something is released on the 12th, for example, then it should ship out in a day or two. this un-fucking believable. screw that.

CC is correct. It's not supposed to be released in US until Jul 17. I'm surprised that they're making the European version available, but I suppose that you could directly order it from some place over in Europe.

Maybe I'll try 123check or some other UK CD price check service and order it directly from the UK. I think that I can wait.

I'm freaking 51 years old--I'm used to waiting. You gotta learn to have patience.

i wasn't wrong. i was actually right, but just under the wrong impression. the last i heard, which was a few weeks back there was no u.s. release date. and there wasn't. a lot of the fan boards were saying so. since i last checked it has obviously changed. that doesn't mean that i was wrong. i was still under the impression that tthere was no release date, as there wasn't one when i last checked. so yeah. they finally nailed a release date down. everytime i would check on pauseandplay.com for example it would always take me to the european release date. really glad to hear there has been a release date. thanks for the update. i was really looking forward to this and was hoping for a u.s. release date.

PJ Harvey will release the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2004's 'Uh Huh Her' in late September. Spinner confirmed the release with a representative from Island Records.

Harvey began writing material for the self-described piano-based album -- rumored to be called 'White Chalk' -- last year, and debuted new songs including 'Bitter Little Bird,' 'The Mountain' and 'When Under Ether,' at various solo festival performances. After the sporadic road tests, she entered the studio in November with former bandmate and guitarist John Parish, as well as producer Flood, who collaborated with Harvey on 1997's 'Is This Desire?'

The ever-elusive Polly Jean is scheduled to perform as part of the Manchester International Festival and Summercase Festival next month, on July 7 and 13-14, respectively.

Former Moloko vocalist Roísín Murphy will follow her thumping groove-pop solo debut Ruby Blue with another collection of zero-cool cooing. Unlike Ruby Blue-- which was boosted in equal measure by Murphy's sultry pipes and knob-spinning by maestro of minutiae Matthew Herbert-- her as-yet-untitled sophomore effort, out this fall on EMI, will be co-produced by a variety of helpers.

Off in the distance though it may be, the album does have a first single: co-written by Roísín and Seiji of West London's Bugz in the Attic collective-- and recently showcased in Forkcast-- "Overpowered" will be released July 2, with a video also on the way. The single will pack remixes of the track from Seamus Haji, Kris Menace, Hervé, and Loose Cannons. Another single will follow in October, in close anticipation of the album's release.

Roísín has also been added to the bill of the previously reported Bestival, which goes down September 7-9 at Newport, England's Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight.

Portishead Debut New Song at Secret Live Gig!

Fans who check Portishead's MySpace hourly likely stumbled across the following somewhat cryptic message today from Geoff Barrow:

"thanks for everyone who came down to see me dj last night and the responce to the live stuff, even though it was only 2 songs. beth and ade enjoyed playin as well.

"sorry we didnt tell everyone about the gig but its good to do things like that every now and again, and its a tiny place."

He added, "ps. the new song hasnt even got a name yet."

Wait a minute-- live stuff? Beth and Ade?? New song??!

Believe it. Reconvening for their first live appearance since February, 2005's Tsunami Benefit one-off-- and debuting brand new material-- the Portishead supertrio of Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley, and Beth Gibbons played two songs to a tiny, unsuspecting crowd at Bristol's Mr Wolfs last night.

An alert Pitchfork reader was on hand to witness the magic, billed under the guise of a Grumpy Man DJs event featuring a guest appearance by Barrow. "After a couple of hours [spinning] eclectic sadcore classics from the likes of Tom Waits and Joy Division," wrote the reader, "Geoff and...Adrian Utley began to play 'Wandering Star'-- Geoff playing bass. A few bars in Geoff picked up the mike and asked 'Anyone here know how to sing?' At this point Beth walked on stage and started singing."

Apparently even venue staff were unaware of the live gig, and the person working the door actually charged Gibbons entry.

"The second song was brand new," the reader continued, "presumably from the forthcoming (if you believe the rumours, sometime this year) album. Rarely have I seen a room full of people all wear exactly the same facial expression, but when I looked at the crowd everyone had their mouths gaping and eyes wide open as if they were witnessing an alien landing. It was wonderful. The new song was completely gorgeous, carried by Beth's vocals and with very low-key instrumentation."

As the Grumpy Man website colorfully put it, "Adrian and Beth joined Geoff onstage and blew all our collective brains to shit." Thankfully said website also includes a link to a bunch of photos from the event. Rumor has it YouTube footage is likely to surface soon, so keep your person situated in front of the internet at all times for the latest developments in the 10+ year saga of Portishead's third album.

In the wake of the new "Absolute Garbage" collection, the members of Garbage are eyeballing mid-2008 to begin making their fifth album.

"We're talking about it," drummer Butch Vig tells Billboard.com, adding that he expects the group to group to head in a markedly different stylistic direction than on its four previous releases.

"If we want to continue making records," Vig explains, "we don't necessarily want to repeat ourselves and do that electronica/rock/hip-hop beats/pop melodies with noise and guitars ... however you would describe us. I think we're interested in making something that's much more sort of primal and stripped down."

Vig says a model might come from the benefit Garbage played for ailing drummer Wally Ingram in California earlier this year, when the quartet played acoustic with a string section.

"It was great, and the crowd went nuts," Vig recalls. "It made us realize how fun it could be to do a record that way. More Neil Young 'Tonight's the Night' meets Leonard Cohen meets Mazzy Star -- druggy, bummer music. Not necessarily druggy, but melancholy and bittersweet.

"Listening to our body of work, my favorite songs are stuff like that -- 'Milk' and 'Queer' and 'You Look So Fine' and 'Bleed Like Me,' the slow and sultry stuff," he continues. When Shirley (Manson) sings that way, I just fall in love with her voice. So I think we could make a completely different record than anything we've done before. It'll probably be commercial suicide, but the music business is so f*cked up now, maybe it'll be the most inaccessible record of our career and we'll have it be the biggest hit."

Vig, however, expects "a long hiatus" for Garbage, with recording not starting until next summer, at least. He recently produced albums for Against Me! and the Subways and mixed the new Jimmy Eat World release. Manson is working on a solo album due in early 2008, and fellow members Duke Erikson and Steve Marker are working on their own projects in England and Colorado, respectively.

"'Absolute Garbage' is the postscript to chapter one," Vig says. "Whatever we do next will definitely be chapter two."

15 Years Later, B-52's Wrapping New Album

By DOUG GROSS, Associated Press Writer Wed Jun 6, 7:13 PM ET
ATLANTA -

Fifteen years after their last album of new material, The B-52s are wrapping up work on their next one.

The quirky dance-pop outfit, which burst onto the new wave scene in 1979 with songs like "Rock Lobster" and cracked the pop charts in the late '80s with the party classics "Love Shack" and "Roam," returned to their hometown of Athens, Ga. to finish recording the as-yet unnamed record.

"We all lived down there for two months and just got back in the swing of things," singer Fred Schneider said from his home on Long Island, N.Y.

He said the group, which has been performing together since 1998 after taking an extended break, always had intentions of recording again. But with members living in New York, Georgia and Florida, it was tricky to get together and write new material.

"After the `Cosmic Thing' and `Good Stuff' tours (in 1989 and 1992), we were a little burned out," he said. "We just had our ins and outs and things going on. It took a while for things to fall back into place."

Schneider said the 11 new tracks will maintain the B-52's danceable, party vibe but will showcase some new directions for a band that, along with R.E.M., helped put Athens on the map as a hotbed of alternative music.

"There's more electronica on it," he said. "It's up-tempo and a bit sexed-up. It's sexier than ever."

Schneider said post-production work on the album is expected to begin soon, with plans to release it early next year. The band owns the master recordings of the album and is now shopping for a record label to release it, Schneider said.

Meanwhile, the group plans a handful of U.S. and European tour dates this summer, with a full concert schedule planned when the album is released.

"It's great to perform when we have new material," Schneider said. "That makes all the difference."

No worse for wear following some major label finagling, era-defying songstress Nellie McKay returns September 25 with Obligatory Villagers, her third LP and second released via her own Hungry Mouse imprint.

The idiosyncratic vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter-- fresh off a Broadway run in The Threepenny Opera-- has crafted (perhaps not coincidentally) an album filled to the brim with the flair of musical theater. From the cheeky ukulele-and-tap-shoes "dance break!" in the middle of album opener "Mother of Pearl" to the chorus of brain-hungry zombies on a finale titled, yes, "Zombie", Villagers finds Nellie and her collaborators at their most lively and rambunctious.

Those collaborators include Bob Dorough, of "Schoolhouse Rock" fame, who lends vocals to several tracks on the new record.

"I just wanted to do all these songs in the Poconos," Nellie told Pitchfork recently, referring to the Northeastern Pennsylvania mountain region where she recorded Villagers. "It's kind of a homecoming. I mean, if you want to find a good person in the world, the Poconos are a good place to start."

While the new songs seem tailor-made for some musical-in-the-making, Nellie says there are no immediate plans to translate her tunes for that sort of stage. Although anything is possible: "If someone gave me this money, you know, I could [even] turn it into a painting."

McKay (which the lady herself pronounces "mik-EYE", FYI) likes to evade when describing her own compositions. Of new track "Identity Theft", she says, "Today I think it's a rumination on cubism. I'm not exactly sure."

With "Zombie" she's more forthright, if only slightly. "I think that everyone secretly wants to be a zombie," Nellie offered. And what about those whose autopilot, consumption-based lifestyles are already halfway there? "They don't go far enough with it," according to Nellie. "[They should] have a little more fun with it, go with the flow." Well all right then.

At only nine tracks, Obligatory Villagers will be Nellie's shortest album by a long shot. Her previous long-players-- 2004's Get Away From Me and last year's much-delayed Pretty Little Head-- were both double-disc affairs clocking in at around 20 songs apiece.

This wasn't a conscious move toward brevity on Nellie's part, however. "It just kind of ended up that way," she said with a laugh. "We always aim for less than 30 [songs]."

For now, Nellie has only one live date lined up-- an appearance on "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" on July 30. While she admits she'll probably do more shows at some point, she's not terribly keen on life on the road.

"I really don't like [touring] very much," she said.

Nellie did, however, have an encouraging experience performing at last month's Hove Festival. "We were recently in Norway and, aside the fact that there was no music crew anywhere, they were very nice to us. You talk about Michael Moore and Sicko and you get cheers. That was huge. [And the crowd was] standing in the rain and their clothes were covered with mud and they were singing and clapping along."

Since she's not planning to tour, what's Nellie to do next? "I think we'll just start working on the next album, you know? Just try to put one foot in front of the other."

Nellie will also contribute a ukulele rendition of the old tune "P.S. I Love You" (not the Beatles song) to the forthcoming film titled, yes, P.S., I Love You.

The Donnas reveal details of 'Bitchin' new album

They'll self-release it this autumn

The Donnas have announced that they will self-release their seventh album, 'Bitchin', on September 18 in the US and October 1 in the UK.

The follow-up to 2004's 'Gold Medal' features 14 tracks co-produced by Jay Ruston (The Polyphonic Spree, Meat Loaf) and sees the band developing a fresh take on their sound free from label pressures, according to a band spokesperson.

"We know what we want, we know how to get it, and we are ready and willing to take it. It's almost like we have come full circle," said guitarist Allison Robertson in a statement.

"Maybe in some way we are still the same dorky pre-teens who started playing because we love rock n' roll. The difference is that now we are completely comfortable and confident with who we are."

'Bitchin' will be released via The Donnas' new label, Purple Feather Records.

They're expected to announce autumn tour dates shortly.

I'm SO excited for Rachael Yamagata's new album... and Vanessa Carlton (although I doubt you guys care about that one)... any news on Leona???

as in Leona Naess and NOT Leona X Factor!!!!
wooden and alone
Thirteens is the name of singer/songwriter Leona Naess's fourth album. But in many ways it feels like her first. Lyrical and emotional, delicate and determined, it's the sound of an artist coming of age and coming into her own. Recorded all over the world with no schedule and no rules, Thirteens is a remarkably cohesive statement; an album inspired by endings and leavings that sounds utterly present and alive. "I was an angst-ridden girl on my other records," Leona says with trademark bluntness. "I'm more like a woman on this one."

All of this remarkable growth came at a heavy cost, however. Since the release of Leona's last album, 2003's rapturous Leona Naess, she has parted ways with her label, ended a serious relationship, turned 30, and worst of all, lost her beloved father, the Norwegian mountaineer and businessman, Arne Naess. With music the farthest thing from her mind, Leona checked out from the world for a time. "I severed ties with everyone in my working life," she says. "I cleaned house and kind of wanted to stop making music. But I was still in love with making music. And the next thing I knew, these songs started coming."

Thirteens draws loosely from country, jazz, folk, and pop; its sound is instantly familiar and wildly intimate. The album's first song, "Not the Same Girl", was, aptly enough, the first one written and in many ways inspired the twelve that would follow. Despite its severe refrain ("I'm not the same girl / who writes loves songs / and believes them") the music is gentle and lilting, the inflection soft. "I didn't want to be cynical," Leona says. "It's a reaction to the stuff that was going on at that time in my life but I didn't want to make a depressed record. It's supposed to be uplifting while being honest about the pain." "Ghosts in the Attic", is similarly brave-faced and tender, dealing directly with the largest absence in Leona's life, her father, without flinching. "I'm not a religious person by any means," she explains, "but that song came out of a dream I had about my dad and to this day I'm completely convinced that it was him in my dream. I needed to believe that it was. And so that's a song that's definitely very close to my heart. Once I wrote it I said 'oooh, we're onto something.'"

While ghosts and dreams haunt the thirteen songs, the bulk of them deal with the concerns of the living and the awake; specifically, the universal push-pull of becoming an adult and wanting to stay young forever. "Train Song" spies on the bustling world of commuters, feeling the human heart beating beneath the mechanical walls of a subway, and "all that's passing" the narrator by: weddings, children, responsibilities and all the other trappings of a predictable life. Conversely, "Leave Your Boyfriend Behind" is an irresistibly irresponsible night out that revels in its gleeful immaturity, dancing and drinking forever-or at least until the end of this song. "I'm still completely struggling with feeling like I have to be an adult", Leona admits. "Like everybody our age, I see a baby and want one and then think, 'fuck! Thank God I dont!' I want to be a kid forever." She sighs. "I'm just completely confused about my role in the world and I think the record reflects that."

In direct contrast to her previous albums, Leona constructed Thirteens piece-by-piece with no pressure and no plan. After amassing a handful of these loose sketches at home in London, she began spending afternoons with multi-instrumentalist and producer, Sam Dixon, jamming and recording bits and pieces onto his laptop. "We did everything raw," Leona remembers. "Every song is the first vocal take. In the past, I'd do all these demos and then get a producer and make it more like a record, she laughs. This time we kept all the original versions and slowly brought in people that would do things as favors." And, slowly but surely, these simple songs travelled the world and were assembled, bit by bit, favor by favor. When strings were needed, Dixon and Leona flew to her native Norway, stayed with family, and recorded in a church hall. Drums came from Dixon's best friend in Australia who received the songs as mp3s, then played along and emailed them back. The sensual, hypnotic, "Swing Gently", was born in Sweden with the help of producer, Nathan Larson. Old East Village comrade, Ryan Adams, crashed a Manhattan studio and contributed his distinctive vocals (and new lyrics) to the reprise of "Leave Your Boyfriend" in one take. Cello and piano were added in Woodstock over a long weekend. "We just tried to be very clever about how to make this record," Leona says. "We brought Sams computer with us around the world and collected sounds, musicians, and ideas. Somehow, over the course of two years, it all came together."

Since her debut, 2000's Comatised, critics have hailed Leona's voice as one of the most unique and lovely in contemporary pop: smoky and sobering, guileless and wise. Thirteens finds that voice at its best, weathered by traumas and thirsty for new experience. On the sultry, finger-picked, "Used to Be Afraid", Leona unspools a long laundry list of fears lines on her face; the end of affairs before settling on a simple refrain: "but it's all right / we've got to make it through tonight." A far cry from the romantic musings of her earlier albums and a perfect summation of who she is today, as a woman and as an artist. "I was 22 when I signed my first record deal," Leona says. "I've changed a lot! And my music has changed with me." Luckily for us, we have Thirteens as gorgeous proof.

true. get her self titled, reddie. it's so pretty and slow and sad and all those good stuff. her voice reminds me of edie brickell, in a way.

I've been waiting for Leona Naess' new album since forever now!

Wasn't it meant to come out ages ago? I love "Not The Same Girl". That was/is going to be on it? It's my favourite Leona song.

I'm also very excited for Rachael's next album since seeing that video preview her website released.
