I just posted a torrent on Mininova with these recordings. I searched for a long time for the CDs, but eventually was obliged to buy them off ebay. There is a guy who makes copies on CDR and prints out the CD Artwork and sells them as the real bootleg. So after I got the CD in the mail, I created this torrent and hopefully people will find the torrent and use it instead of buying it.

I imported them into my iTunes at 256 KBPS, but seeing as how they were homemade CDRs to begin with, I don't know if they are the best quality. If anyone has an better copy (preferably a real bootleg), I encourage them to create their own torrent, or a Rapidshare file. I was unable to download them from the girlysound.com website. It just sent me to another site with advertisements.

Another recording I'd love to get my hands on is an R.E.M. live performance at McCabe's Guitar Shop back in the late 80's. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Here is the Girlysound torrent link:
http://www.mininova.org/tor/794130

Within 2 hours of posting it, there were 8 people leeching. I was surprised and proud.

On the http://www.girlysound.com website, right click on the song to be downloaded, save target as, and save which will initiate the download. I guarantee that the sound quality of the girlysound website selections are superior to anything you bought off of ebay. I believe the girlysound website songs were obtained from cassettes sent from Liz herself back in the day. They are by FAR the best quality out there. Enjoy!

Thank you. This page is new to me. I wasn't able to get to it before. This page has most of what I bought on ebay, minus a few tracks.

There are rumors that a 3rd tape was created and exists somewhere. Maybe it has some of these missing tracks.

Bliss and Fetish and some of the other collections that exists are much later versions and were collected and redone after the originals.

If you drill into the girlysound forum, you can find copies of the original artwork from the tapes, as made by Liz.

Here is the link to the girlysound forum:

What you bought on eBay is most certainly not complete and those other tracks are not Girly Sound material.

I think it's pretty safe to say that it's a fact, not a rumor that a third tape exists.

To avoid confusion (and there does seem to be a LOT of confusion when discussing Liz's output as Girly Sound) or to clarify: songs from all 3 tapes have been compiled and bootlegged over the years in various forms (often with incorrect song titles and poor sound quality). I guess that still sounds confusing...

It would be helpful if the www.girlysound.com site provided visitors with some information about the history of the tapes.

There are many changes in progress over at GirlySound. Hosting guitar tabs is one thing being discussed.

There are other changes that are also "in progress". Exciting--I hope.

If you wish to make suggestions for content over at GirlySound, please sign on to the forum and open up a thread. I'm very much open to user suggestions and I believe that our fearless leader is as well.

Just to back up shmoopy: It is a fact that a third Girly Sound tape exists; it's also a fact that the third tape contains all the Girly Sound tracks that were later released on the Juvenilia EP (except "Dead Shark"), as well as "Gigalo," "Stratford-on-Guy," "Whip-smart," "Speed Racer," "Open Season," "Slave," and probably a few others. These songs were definitely not included on the first two Girly Sound cassettes, as their tracklists are definitely known, so they had to have come from a third tape. No rumor.

"Eventually she filled up three cassettes with music, dubbing them Girly Sound, for the amusement of a few friends." - Chicago Tribune Magazine, Sept. 25, 1994

You don't have to take the Tribune's or my word for it; just check the back cover of the Juvenilia EP.

Let the buyer beware: No Girly Sound collection is "complete" until the entire contents of the third tape can be verified.

"Liz Phair, more than any other rock star at her level of fame, has always seemed like someone who began with almost no ambitions beyond entertaining herself. If you listen to the bootlegged Girly Sound tapes that created the initial buzz around her before she had ever even played in public, you hear a young woman for whom music appears to be nothing more than a fun hobby. The talent is there, and it's tremendous, but she genuinely does not seem to care." -- J. Neo Marvin, 1998

GirlySound could certainly mirror the information currently in the wikipedia entry for GirlySound.

I would assume that the original artwork would be added to the other information. Evidently, the wikipedia gods don't seem to completely trust the people that were editing or the referenced information from the Mesmerizing website (huh?).

Check the forum, we've been discussing some of this information.

I guess if I had known more about it, I wouldn't have seeded that torrent. But some folks are leeching off it, so I leave it for now. I even left a comment on the ebay page, letting the seller know that I was trying to kill his profits. He didn't respond though.

regarding tape 3....
in her iTunes originals thing Liz says: "...I recorded about 3 tapes worth, 14 songs apiece, maybe 12..."
but then again "about 3" could round out to 2....just a thought

She clearly recorded more than 2 tapes.

EDIT: Nevermind -- you were obviously joking.

Not on your life. And if JE ever made a Liz mistake, the whole universe would bend to his will until his accident became truth, that is how much Liz power he wields. smile.gif

I bought a Japanese CD which has all of Girliesounds and is not a bootleg source. It's a Japanese import put out by Capitol Records themselves and has 4 discs. The first two are Girliesounds and the second two are other tracks, which includes demos of WCSE tracks. The first two discs have 17 tracks each and the two other discs have 23 and 26 tracks. I'd be happy to up them somewhere if you people are interested.

It's official title is: Liz Phair What A Pretty Life: The Girlysounds and Whitechocolatespaceegg demos.

Funnily enough to the first poster I also have the McCabes REM show on vinyl and a couple of the tracks on CDs from singles.

"One of my brothers once accused me, only in half-jest, of having a heart like a 'cold, hard nugget.' But my apparent unresponsiveness and impreturbability was a front for an almost unbearable, pathological sensitivity and anxiety; I was frozen in fear knowing that if I moved or opened my mouth, I would say and do the wrong thing. Or if I let anyone push me, or touch me, in a certain way, all my sealed-in emotion might explode out of me like the air from a popped balloon." - Juliana Hatfield
